View Full Version : My car got keyed!

Just when I thought it was going to end after my car got hit while parked and my rental car got rear ended by a drunk driver, it gets better. http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/images/icons/icon8.gif

My car got keyed today across the entire passenger side, hood, and hatch. The clearcoat and paint is gone, down to the primer. I don't know anyone who would possibly do this this to my car, and I was parked at a secure, indoor lot.

Any ideas how much this is going to cost me, and the resale value of my car? At least 6 panels need to be painted.

you're looking at a $1500 $2000 paint job there, they have to repaint each panel entirely.

Man that sux big time. I got keyed at Wonderland 2 summers ago. Luckily I took may parents older car and not mine (took my nieces and they mess up my interior).
I don't know how much it'll cost but a lot if all those panels need to be repainted. And you'll probably notice difference in color from the other panels. Unless if there are ways to somehow fill in the keyed areas and still get good results?

The thing that sucks most is that I was just about to sell the car. The resale's definately going to take a big hit from this.

bro I feel your pain..... I had the same thing happen to me but not only did they keyed the whole driver side from the front of the car to the back. They did the roof and trunk also and let all the air out of my tires!!! $2000 it cost after all of that.

Just hang in there.

Yes, but not where I parked!

Can you see the people that came in and out around the time it got keyed though? Have the police asked to look at the tapes?

Or do they just not care, as is usually the case when people do things to cars... :(

Wow, really sorry to hear of all the bad luck you'be been experiencing as of late. If it were me I'd just have it repaired and sell it right away. You don't have to tell anybody it was keyed, do you? Would the repair work show up when/if the Carfax is pulled?

The cameras are at exits and entrances. I've filed a report with the police already, and while they agreed to review the tapes, they were doubtful that they would catch who did it.

I don't think it'll show up unless I make an insurance claim - but do I have to tell the potential buyers it was repainted? Of course, someone with a good eye will spot it no matter how good the paint job is.

I wouldn't say that.....I had a body panel painted on my car (even more difficult since it was the pearl) and I don't think you'd be able to pick it out unless I told you. I can't tell and it's my car!

take pics of the key marks
so when ur selling the car you can tell them why you had it repainted
or get a real good paint job i have a place i can recomend (New Concept)
905-761-1611 talk to Pat you can tell him ur part of the club and you know me

ohh and BTW

All it takes is a paint thickness gauge to tell that the car doesn't have factory paint.

Sorry to hear. I don't think resale will take that big of a hit. If anything, you may want to bring it to a Mazda dealership to get painted and say that it was done by the dealership...

$2K is my estimate...

Okay, seriously, how many people do you actually suspect will even bother to check the thickness of your paint?

Caz

I would say less than 1% would check.

Stop worrying.

I think people are more concerned if the car has been involved in a collision as opposed to a respray for "cosmetic" damage.

SIM SIMMA

Agreed... just sell the damn thing :)

Caz

Take photos and if the re-paint becomes an issue with the purchaser, you can show them it wasn't in a collision.

PlatMS6

What if I trade it in?

The only way that you are going to get a decent trade-in ammount would be if you traded the car in to Mazda, and got another one :P MS3/MS6?

Trust me on this, from what I remember it was a 4.5k difference with VW's ammount compared to what Mazda offered. This wasn't just limmited to one dealer, it was the same (give or take 1 or 2k) for Nissan, Acura, Volvo ...you name it, I honestly thought that the Mazda3 was the new Neon in terms of depreciation, as far as dealer trade-ins go. Mazda's offer was pretty much what the car would have went for privately, plus with the crazy deals at year end and low low rates, I saved tsousandss and never looked back :P

If you sell it privately you are going to get nickel&dimed to death when they realise how many panels were repainted.
