Please enlighten me. What does this unit do?
That's a clean install I must say. Good job.

That's a clean install I must say. Good job.

It manages the cars computer..... Adjusts parameters to make more power to put it simply... More fuel... etc... It is a "chip".. only a lot more expensive and RD put into it.

Hey Vlad.. how did his rims turn out? I wanna see!

lol.. is he gonna serve another 200 chicken wings for that install?? lol

What kind of gains is he getting....a note on the pictures: TO MANY WIRES!!! lol.

Good work Vlad. Placement and number of wires makes that a bitch of a job :( If I put a piggy back in I'm gonna get you to do my wiring :)

The unit is still too new for me to have an opinion on it, but it'll be interesting to see how it runs and what kind of gains he gets. Be sure to emphasize getting a dyno tune at a reputable shop before trying to squeeze too much out of it. Most blown engines with piggy-backs are due to people not doing the tuning right.

That sounds like what a car Voltage stablizer is "supposed" to do. Even out the power distribution across all electronics and therefore "increase" performance.

But it's supposed to be almost plug and play.

Actually what this does is intercept signals from various sensors and changes them before they get to the cars computer. This "fools" the computer into thinking that different things are happening with the sensors than is actually the case, and then the computer changes certain aspects of any computer controlled device to compensate for what it "thinks" is happening. For instance, it may cut fuel a little (lean out the car) or change wastegate activity (increase boost) or change ignition timing, among many other things.

This can help create quite a bit more power and these types of systems have been in use for quite some time.

So the Chip is made specifically for the MS3? How would it know what the optimized settings? Does it adapt to driving style?

Well said Pat..... The chip your actually looking at is on a MS6.... but yes there is one out or coming out very soon for the MS3. It does not adapt.... hence as Pat said, you need to have it properly tuned by a shop.... a shop you trust or you could be killing your engine. They have been in use for many years in many different forms. I think the CP-E one is one of the better ones you can buy and with proper tuning and money spent, can yield some very healthy gains.

Great questions.

Actually first this isn't considered chipping. That is when you actually swap part of the ECU out, normally reserved for VW's or BMW's. This is usually called either a "Piggyback" or "Standback".

Usually the units can work on different cars, what's differentiates between the vehicles is 3 things:

1) Wiring schematic of how to connect it into the cars system.
2) Program on the unit and Laptop (when used for tuning)
3) Vehicle and MOD specific Maps. These are the settings the unit uses to determine exactly how much to change the signals by.

The Maps will change depending on what MODs you have on the car, and even though general Maps are usually provided with a unit when you purchase it for a specific unit, it is always wise to have it Dyno Tuned to fine tune the map for both performance and safety (Engine safety so you don't blow it up).

Drivability usually is not effected with a conservative, i.e. safe tune.

Seriously this sounds like a really really complex mod. I mean I could see someone having to go to a shop or adjust the settings every few months or so to prevent problems.

Does this also mean that the driver would not see any potential CEL's and not realize there was a problem until it was too late?

MS6 on a MS3 is bad right? or should it be bascially the same?

Usually if it's a safe tune you don't need to redo it too often. CELs can still appear but since sensors are being effected, if you have a bad map then they won't know to go off :)

For safety reasons, with things like this it's always wise to have additional gauges for monitoring, mainly Wideband to monitor AF, but also EGT and maybe oil pressure are good to (this is when gauges become useful).

My understanding is that the ECU on the MS6 is a different design from the MS3, so even though the unit may be the same, the wiring, programming and maps will be different.

Would a unit like this yield any noticeable gains if tuned conservatively on a stock N/A system like the Mazda3?

MPS

i think mazda 3 uses unichip

Unfortunately no Unichip for the 3, at least not yet :(

A Unichip is basically a conservatively mapped Piggyback with plug and play connectors.
