Okay, so I live in a new subdivision and the time is coming up when its time to put up some fences. Now, my neighbour has a bunch of kids (like 5 or 6, I can't really tell, they keep multiplying) and are constantly playing in my backyard :flaming. They leave their toys there and its ruining my grass :complain. So I definitely want to put up a fence, what's your position if they were to tell me they don't want to go halves on it? Should I bring out the pit bulls and the barbwire? Suck it up and pay it all myself? Or how do I persuede him to split it?

I do believe that if they don't want to pay half, then there is nothing you can do about it.

You can though put all the ugly wood on their side. :)

50/50 of basic or actual cost..

based on quotes and letter of "notice of intent" and blah blah blah

assume u live in 'ssauga (http://www.mississauga.ca/file/COM/DIVISION_FENCE_BYLAW0075_2004.pdf)..

I feel you pain about the kids in the yard.
I just finished my fence and thankfully I did have to deal with this.

FYI -You can legally get them to pay for have for a chain-link fence (any more than that and it is out of your pocket). It is done thru the town or city and it will go on their taxes.

Yeah, I believe by law they have to pay for half... but only for a cheap-ass fence. If you want something better, then you're on the hook.

Have you asked yet? Hopefully it won't even be an issue.

If it is though, then as Skarbro said... you can always face all the ugly sides to them. :chuckle

Might want to look into whether there's any rules about what the fence can look like. Maybe paint their side hot pink or something.

Maybe paint their side hot pink or something.

I know someone that did this after 2 1/2" years of an unfinished fence and not getting any money in return. He ended up taking his fence boards down and painting them random colours. He had to buy new bofence boards for his side in the end, but the fence was finished very quick after he did that.

Like majic and Caz both said it is 50% of the lesser of the basic or actual cost (basic being the 4ft chain link)

The reason for basic reference is you may want to build a 5' brick, stone and wrought iron fence just to have your neighbour pick up half the tab.

Why not just have your own brats or let the Pitt Bulls shet all over the lawn. Nothing worse then trying to clean dog Shet off those little sneakers.

Since you are in a new subdivision you might want to try to organize all the other neighbours and have a fence building weekend. This might be enough to persuade your neighbour to pitch in for part of the cost and labour.

After reading this I would like to thank my neighbour for the lovely 60' long cedar fence with latice he errected about 2 weeks after we moved in 3years ago. He said they had contracted out the building of the fence prior to us moving in and said not to worry about the cost as he felt it would be unfair to us to ask for money.

Thats what makes good neighbours and if you need to live beside or behind these people for any length of time it may just be worth the extra cost.

Dayyyuuum Majic, your majoogle skills amaze me mang! Any access to Brampton by-laws? lol. The pesticide idea is very tempting though. I haven't talked to the neighbour yet but I just wanted to prepare for the worst. Thanks for all the ideas guys (and gals) keep them coming.

u should put a towel on the grass and tan naked :D that'll scare the kids! and freak the parents...so they'll most likely get a fence, rather then their kids staring at a naked person....hahahaha..

Ducks for two reasons:

1)As a torontonian, it is a sin to be a Sens fan, provided the Leafs had made it to the first round we would have bounced the Sens out like every other year (but the Flyers would have eliminated us...like every other year)

2)As a former resident of La La land, a little bit of me has to root for my alternate home town team

Honestly building a standard wood fence is really really easy.

the hardest part is digging/sinking the posts.

If you want a wood fence for the price of a shit metal one. I would suggest looking for someone to sink the posts for you, then when they set just build it yourself. that way its at cost, you can build it properly, and you get the pride of building your own fence.

this causes a few issues with kids because of the following...

As I useto be a kid, i know that fence = built in homerun wall/soccer goal, so expect them to be firing balls and such at your beautiful wood fence, but then, atleast if they break some slats, they have to pay for em.

Trust me, even if you havent really ever built anything with wood before, a fence is super easy!

ok this is ALMOST second infraction of the DAY .. lol.. discuss sens and ducks in the other thread.. unless you're sitting on the fence which you clearly are not :)

Damn Mr. Majic, calling penalties left and right here...Anyways :OT, I was thinking of building it myself, but I guess the matter isn't the cost but more the principle. Good fences make good neighbours...and in my opinion, to not split the cost (no matter what it is) is an "f--- off" but we'll see, I have yet to talk to him but will do so soon.

MattC

Well go to them and ask to split the cost of you making one before you do it.

Just blame your wife, say she wants to have a nice enclosed garden hahah.

If you split the cost of you making one yourself, itll be supa-cheap!

I'm glad someone brought this topic up!

I'm actually on the other side of the fence on this one.
My neighbour is pushing for a fence, trying to rally everyone in the neighbourhood.

Only thing is, it's only been a year (as of June 1st) and I don't think the city has finalized the grading yet.
Unless the city has surveyd the lots and approved the grading, they have the right to tear up your fence at your expence, then you have to build another one. So I'd rather wait.

Also, I want my fence to end at the back of my house, where most people have it end. BUT he wants his extended to the front of his house.
So I don't want to have to split the cost of that extention 'cause I don't want it there in the first place. He's not to happy about that.
We have a good relationship as neighbours right now, and I don't want to ruin things.

We still talk, say hi and stuff, he hasn't brought up the fence in a while since i've disagreed on things, but I know soon he's gonna ask again.

How am I supposed to say "Either you don't build it that far or you pay for the
extra fencing" without causing a rift?

MattC
06-03-2007, 09:26 AM
Well I mean theres no real way to make sure no feelings are hurt unles syou totally agree with the guy, some people take things more personally than others.

I would say, listen, this is where I want the fence to go, and I don't want to pay for the extra footage that you want, can we work something out where we can find out how much that extra extention would be, and you exclude that from the half you will be paying?

If you are getting a company to install the fence they will gladly let you know how much the extra 20-40 feet would be...

And any rational non medicated adult should find this to be a reasonable deal...

who knows about your neighbour.. but good luck!

Yeah,
I basically told him I didn't want my fence going that far up,
but if he really wanted it, he could pay for it himself.

He kinda thought it was unfair, because it would still be dividing up our
property line. as if I got extra fencing for free.

im currently having a fencing problem myself as i have 4 lots adjacent to mine and half of the people want chain-link because of the "scenery" while the other half, including myself want wood fence for privacy and to potentially raise the property value. Due to by-laws we will probably put up the wood but we'll have to pay the full difference between the wood and chain link.

a few of my angry immature suggestions to coax the neighbours into wood were to ...
1. sunbathe naked while greasing myself uncontrollably
2. have several rowdy parties/bbq/tm3 meets in my backyard
3. block their so-called "scenery" with a gazebo or some sort of novelty inflatable gorilla

hopefully they will see it my way afterward :chuckle

Speaking from experience, you have to wait for the city's approval before you build. They city had a bunch of houses re-graded on my street, thank heavens nobody had built a fence yet.

As for the fence going to the front of the house, why does he want the added cost? Is there a side door or something he wants to include in the back yard? If there isn't he is wasting a lot of money to divide unusable property.

If my memory is any good, I think you bought a 36' house from Orchard ridge? Therefore you should have 8' between house (4' side yards) on the side with the gate. Do either of you have A/C installed? The reason I ask is that you could install the units on the side of the house and have space to walk around them if the fence ended at the rear of the house. This will keep more of you rear yard as usable space.

That is GOLD!! If you put a big inflatable gorilla in your back yard, I want pics posted here right away!!! :chuckle

As for the other guy... who the heck builds the fence into the front yard?? Is he gonna block in his whole house and put a gate somewhere?
