It all depends on what you need, if you need just a straight host for images and files, then any cheap 3-7$ monthly hosting will do.

if you need special database access or shopping tools then you need to be more picky.

I use Uplink Earth, they are really good service wise and connectivity wise.

I have been with them for over 3 years now, and probably won't get another host in the next 5. they have pretty standard rates, meaning you wont get bargain basement pricing, but you will get good support and you can basically pick and choose what you need on your hosting plan.

you still havent stated what you will be hosting!!!

for images i use http://xs.to

it works great.. allows 500 images that you can delete/control and each one is limited to 1.5MB or 2.5MB i forget.. it's quite reliable, i've been on it for about a year and i remember it failing once so far for a day or so.. but since the pictures aren't critical i can live with that

I would like to set up a forum or a wiki for my work, I need something that can be edited only by authorised users.

cheers

I don't know the details of the plans that they offer, but I host a basic site and e-mail with www.arvixe.com - $30 a year...but they have other plans.

I use www.bluehost.com . They have been awsome. I host a few sites through them, support is 24/7 and the C-Panel is nice.

+1 to what majic said about media temple, I useto be hosted by them but they were bad at allocating bandwidth to their shared plans.

All their bandwidth seems to be going to their big dedicated servers.

for a wiki and stuff uplinkearth would be fine. (their not paying me to say this, i just really like them)

its hard to find an economical hosting company that a) doesn't go under after a year. and b) is reliable with support.

how about... http://pages.google.com/-/images/logo.png (http://pages.google.com/?pli=1)

as reliable as it gets ;) 100 mb storage tho and not sure on bandwidth.. and you'd have to see if you could host a wiki off there :P

you all seem to be "web designer", I'm not, some basics in html, but I'd like to learn...what do you recommend to start with? learn Dreamweaver? PHP? etc.etc...any school in toronto? private courses? what about lynda.com?

hardly.. i barely even 'do' websites.. google's page creator is a super clean and easy WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor.. most of the sites/pages i would do in ultraedit but a WYSIWYG will be much faster (although you won't really 'learn' html)

i guess css (stylesheets) dhtml, javascript, php, ajax, are the shizzle but that's just my observation.. justin and methodyst can surely chime in about the design part although it takes more than just 'coding' .. you have to have an eye for layout/colour schemes and most importantly common sense..

anyway.. this is about web hosting so :OT

Try looking for some dreamweaver user groups etc.

thats always a good place to start. I never really looked for a place to talk about webdesign since its what i do all day, so after 5pm im kina sick of it ;)
