Okay have a little problem with my computer...
lately everytime I try to shut down windows, it will not turn off the computer..
I just get that screen in which indicates that Windows XP is shutting down and it does nothing after that....
just sits there and the computer is still on...I have to manually turn off my computer.
so any suggestions to why this could be happening?
If it helps I recently installed a USB 2.0 Card but thats about it..
My computer is Dell Dimension P4, I think the 8200 series...
thanks for reading

sorry.. i don't support dells ;)
see what services are running when it's shutting down.. windows might have some issues turning those services off.. might be time to reinstall :S
does it happen when you do standby? restart? hibernate?

Thats why I switched to a mac...
Did the problem start before the USB card was installed?

make sure you dont have this scvhost.exe on your processes not to be mistaken with svchost.exe
The scvhost.exe is a sign of a virus....

If you know how to deal with computers, my first recommendation would be to format your system and re-install windows. If you dont know how to do that, PM me and I can help you out! I kinda wanted a stubby antenna for my car... I know what im doing, and could back up your stuff and have you up and running in a couple hours (just so you dont even bother checking, geek squad at BB charges about $100 for this...) [/shameless plug]
Often the dell systems (especially the early P4s) are a pain in the ass to get going because you need a device driver for the SATA hard drive, and getting that in there is not fun.
Windows is a crappy operating system, and especially if you install and un-install stuff, system files just seem to get corrupted, and formatting to just re-install and start from scratch is always a good idea. I personally format my computer about every 4 or 5 months just to clean things up and have it running just like new :)
Anyways, let me know if you want help, or if you just have any questions I would be more than glad to help.

It's probably just an issue where it no longer has the ability to actual turn itself off. After a while older computers get like that. I don't believe there is anything really you can do except manually turn it off.

:whoa
Ive been working with computers quite a while now, and no computer that is anything after a Pentium 2 should have such an issue. I have actually never even seen this problem before. I am almost 100% sure that one of the shutdown files in the OS has become corrupted and thats whats causing the problem.

Try to put the Oem window XP disc in and select repair, u should have some files missing, or u deleted sth about the system file that u didnt know.

Start >> run > regedit
Navicate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>>Control Panel>>Desktop directory in the Registry, then alter the key AutoEndTasks to the value 1
Reboot and you'll now be able to shutdown/restart without hesitation.
Hope this helps :)

Dell's seem to be engineered to be pains in your ass if you modify them.
every friend I know who has a dell has ran into crap when upgrading it.

check the event viewer for failures on services shutting down (there might be something in there) Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event viewer

Any chance you are running Zonelabs Zonealarm? I've had this happen before and it seems if you run this and allowed the last upgrade, there is a chance of the non shut down issue.
Let us know if you use zonelabs as your firewall and if so, remove it and see.

it jus likes to shut down whenever it feels liek it...it pisses me off

that's so not the same problem.. urs is worse!! don't upgrade.. just format.. or maybe try fixing the system files by booting up with the XP cd like somebody else mentioned.. I've tried vista and believe me you don't want to touch that with a 10 foot pole right now..
oh, and I have seen this before.. was forced to format.. haven't formatted my computer in 3 years.. yay.. =P

I've run into similar symptoms with my Dell desktop...
Consider:
1. Are there any USB sticks plugged in when you are shutting down? If so, try disconnecting them first, THEN doing the shutdown.
2. Could be anti-virus or firewall software hiccuping. make sure both are up to date, and can always test by turning if off and shutting down.
3. Any CD or DVD discs in their drive? Same issue as USB sticks...
(hope at least one of these works)
