why do they warn us about them?
http://xs216.xs.to/xs216/07231/DSC00596.JPG
I can only think of ONE reason.. privacy issues.. they snap a pic so at least they warn you that a camera exists..
i've been taking yonge street to work (instead of university avenue) - literally every OTHER intersection has a RLC - and i must tell you it makes me think twice about trying to cross the intersection on amber.. so i guess it works lol..
I heard half the cameras are fake and used as a visual deterrent.
Yes prolly a privacy issues. It's same with camera on mobile phones. Lot of vendors are starting to remove the option where you can turn off the sound of shutter.
not in toronto there all real :chuckle

I don't think it has anything to do with privacy, the goal is to stop you from committing the crime. They aren't out there to get you, no one wants to be dealing with it.

I think so. My understanding is that the city has limited number of the actual camera - not enought to populate all intersections equipped with RLC housings. So they (I think randomly) move them around different intersections.

majic, you might want to add that link to your first post so people know where the cameras are.

I think they use the signs to ensure that all four directions believe that the camera is there. In reality, only one or two directions have them...
Look at Finch and Don Mills. Only north/south has the camera.

I think they should put cameras in throughout the city... red-light/speed whatever, to generate the precious income they are so after. The person gets it in the mail, pays, all done...plus a bonus - no demerits in most cases.
But they should get rid of hwy restrictions in a lot of areas.
Canada has way too many police boys and girls, looking after traffic, they could probably cut off half and still be perfectly fine.
Just follow the euro way... you can't go wrong!

It has nothing to do with privacy issues.
There are only like 4 actual cameras that they circulate throughout the like 50 locations. They keep moving them around randomly. The signs are deterrents and nothing more.

gotta disagree man, looking at Britain, I'd rather start biking.
red light cameras, speeding cameras, all those crazy signs in a roundabout...
cameras that now calulcate ur average speed between two cameras...

38 locations, 10 cameras.. they rotate them through w/o us knowing which ones are actually functional
source (http://www.toronto.ca/transportation/redlight_cameras/index.htm)
Right now, 10 cameras are being rotated among 38 intersections. With the success of the cameras, more may be added in the future.

right.. read above.. why don't you just STFU when you have nothing constructive to say or when you're incorrect?? :loco

the markings are on the opposite sides of the intersection as that is the only traffic the camera catches.. in fact, i'm willing to bet that it only catches the traffic in one direction as the sensors are usually located just on one side of the intersection..

While some people have called the cameras a tax grab, in fact it costs more to operate the cameras than the program generates in terms of revenue.
seems like you're incorrect on that one.. but they are definitely a plus when it comes to the ticket.. yes it's expensive but carries no demerit points and doesn't show up on the abstract :)
It has nothing to do with privacy issues.
as much as i would like to believe it, i think privacy plays a big role in this case... the other part would be the deterrent.. and hell it works b/c as i mentioned before it makes me MUCH more aware of AMBER lights.. i rarely run those.. and the countdown timers help a lot in terms of timing the lights..
back to privacy.. why do you think cabbies have these huge ass stickers "your photo will be taken" and cctv signs plastered around go stations and areas utilizing cctv? so that they don't invade our privacy w/o first warning us...

this may sound really stupid....but when and how do red light cameras work???
i got scared the other day, b/c i was waiting at an intersection to make a left turn....i was somewhat over the pedestrian walk waiting for the car in front of me to turn left....but the guy sat there until the light turned yellow ALMOST red....and left me sitting there with my car halfway sticking out...so i went anyway.....
basically 75% of my car was over the cross walk when i left to turn..but i know by the time my car was in actual turning process the light was red... :( i hope the camera didnt go off.

It's not that it's not working (as in broken), it may be that it doesn't have a camera inside. Posts above will explain this.
