I need a new one for the other side, but I don't know what it's called.

I believe it's called "Strap Hanger" (which is attached to the "liftgate side trim")

Do these things break often? Is it something I should be careful with?

The strap hanger breaking doesn't seem like a it happens often, I haven't seen another thread like this (though i could of missed it).

that said, i take that piece all the time as i always seem to be moving things (go hatch!) and nothing has happened yet. However whenever it seems that whenever i speak out like this saying this didn't happen to me somehow it manages to happen within the next few months.. =(

The knot in the hanger gets untied.

Just ask for the cargo cover string.

I don't know how it broke. It was broken when I bought my USED car. Actually the car I bought didn't have a cargo cover at all but there was another car that did so I asked them to take the cover out of the other car. I figured it was better to have a broken one than none at all!

I wonder how the previous owner lost the cover and broke the hook?
Possible break-in or accident? Or maybe just rough use? I wonder...

Well... losing the cover is easy. I've currently got mine off and sitting in my garage. Something could easily fall on it and break it or something, or I could just stuff it away somewhere and forget about it. I wouldn't be too suspicious of that.
