Im in a helpful mood today,

From what Majoogle said, Canadian tire sells HID close looking halogen bulbs, but be warned... Although the colour looks white than stock it will look nothing close to HIDs... The length of a halogen bulb will last less than an HID look halogen bulb... From my experience, I ended up switching halogen bulbs/replacing less than 4 months. Also if you decide to take that approach 55W is the safest wattage for halogen... Dont exceed or your headlight housing are going to look foggy inside (after they burn out)..

I should have gotten HIDs along time ago, but just had to do extensive research and options...

Hope this helps... and yes Devin98 is the guy to get HIDs from...

So from what you say....if i buy those white halogen bulbs they should last longer than stock light bulbs?

negative.
from what i heard, they will last shorted than the stock bulbs, because the filament is shorter, or something like it, so they burn out faster.....

Spend the extra now for HID's instead of replacing the bulbs every few months and you will come out ahead in the end.

HIDs FTW, but make sure your kit comes with correct bulbs or you will get shadow in light beam like this (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=18773)

What's with all these posts about halogen bulbs only lasting a few months? Are you guys touching the glass of the bulbs with your fingers? Even the crappiest halogens have lasted me at least a year each. On average, they last me around 2 years each.

Of course, I'm speaking from experience from my past cars. I've never changed the bulbs on my Mazda3 yet.

I don't disagree that HIDs are superior, but I don't agree that halogens are as crappy as everyone seems to make them out to be.

I've had Halogens last <3 months and >2.5 years! I guess it all depends on the batch, brand, install, etc.

I would never buy a set of halogens again if I could. I love my HIDs and that's all there is to it.

The bulbs in question aren't the OEM bulbs, it is the aftermarket super white (sylvania or GE hawk) halogen bulbs.

I am saying that instead of buying the aftermarket halogens a few times, the OP should buy a set of HID's with lifetime warranty and they will pay for themselves as they don't need to be replaced.

From my experience OEM bulbs are best (unless you go HID). Aftermarket bulbs (sylvania silverstars, GE hawk bulbs, Nokya..) don't last long and cost much more (about $30-$60+taxes/pair). I had a pair of silverstars before my HID's, they lasted for 6months.
I calculated at about $50 for every 6 months I may as well just get HID's.

I confess, I didn't read all the previous posts...

Based on my experience, the "HID match" bulbs from Canadian tire are useless. I purchased the Silverstar Ultras for a whopping $70 only to find out that they are still yellow. Refunded them a week later.

Save yourself the money and get a HID kit. I recently purchased a HID kit for $200 (now on sale for $185).

The Sylvania Silverstars or the GE nighthawks are nice lights... for a halogen bulb.. and are much brighter then the stock OEM bubls.... The silverstars are a little more white then the Nighthawks.... I have used both... I was an avid Silverstar user untill I found out that they are rated for approximately 240 hrs. which is nothing... so I went with the Nighthawks since they are "the brightest white light on the market" according to GE.... I didnt find them as bright as the silverstars as the silverstars have a blue tinge where as the nighthawks were just white white. They are brighter but are nowhere near as bright as a set of HID's everyone on here is right instead of wasting money by keep replacing the halogens go buy a nice set of HID's

Sadly I found out you can't get Silverstar Ultra for the Mazda 3 low beams :(

nope you can't but you can get the regular silverstars.... again.. I don't think they last long enough to warrant $60 + tax a little too steep for me... besides much rather have HID's then the look of HID's if you really want that fake HID look best to head to Pmall... and buy a couple packs of those cheap import blue lights... they are bright but sure are cheap!

Just make sure the wattage is 55w.... some say they are...But look at the label... 70W.... = burnt housing. = fogging of headlight....

do HID raise my insurance?
Why would HIDs raise your insurance premium? The answer is no.

LOL. If anything they should lower your insurance since you can actually see the road at night.

Get 5000K if you want a white light with just a hint of blue, or get 6000K if you want more blue. Keep in mind that the higher the temperature, the less light you get. If I remember correctly, you lose 7% light when gong from 5000K to 6000K.

they won't have any effect on your insurance..... 5000k are very white... 6000k have a nice blue tinge to them.. I installed a 6000k setup in my 3 and love it.. the only problem i have with them now.. is when i drive other cars the lights are like yellow cuz they aren't as bright.
