What do you think guys?

Xbox 360
Pros:
Lots of gaming support, with titles like gears of war and halo 3
Nice controllers with "charging" functinationaly (not sure if ps3 has the same)

Cons:
Still sorta expensive for what you're getting
need to buy $200 HD-DVD unit just to play dvds
- need to buy wifi add on
Functionality issues, aka ring of death and system failures

PS3
Pros:
Blu Ray player and no need to add on anything
Lots of POTENTIAL games and sony reputation, resistance is still good.. and metal gear on the way, titles like army of two will also be available to ps3
Built in wifi

Cons:
definitely still expensive
still currently not a lot of games
controllers lack vibration feature

Overall, i'm not concerned about "urgency" here.
I want to get the system before the new year and am willing to wait until christmas for another price drop. I know personally that 360's will drop again in about 1 week in price.

However, I'm not sure what is the best system to go with once the time comes. I love first person shooters which ps3 is lacking. But i want to get my moneys worth and functionality is also important.

Only reason i'd go with xbox is for the games....

WII !!!

I sold my PS3 cause it got boring.
My friend sold his xbox360 cause it got boring too.

Graphics on the wii suck donkey ***, but at least its something you can play with little kids or the gf. Not to mention alot of games on the wii make for good drinking games :P

Also, I had PS1, PS2 and PSP. Therefore, my next console will be PS3 ;)

I thought that too ! The ps1/ps2 and psp were great but ps3 was a let down for me. LOL but if you ask blunty you'll get a totally different answer.

I agree, it's more fun playing with other people Xbox or Wii.

xbox for sure.....
Seriously......xbox have far more games then ps3 now and who knows if ps3 will stop making games? there selling less and less systems/games.

BTW....ps3 will announce that the dual shock will be back to there games. My friend told me sony bought the right to have vibrate on there controllers again.

And yea.....Wii is getting boring....haven't touched it since forever....anyone wants to buy one? i'm selling it. :)

It depends what you're into. I'm currently waiting to see the latest Gran Turismo and play it a bit. Then I'll decide, I'm a racing game freak, and at the moment the 360 would suit my fancy because it has some wicked titles like PGR3 and Forza2

good thoughts so far.

I also already have a wii so that takes care of my "noob" entertainment for kids and gf's and girls lol.

But yeah multiplayer and online is VERY important to me.

i'd love to play gears of war and halo 3 online with friends and others... but once again.. i'm not concerned about the present

i want to get best bang for my buck, which includes NOT paying for darn xbox live too...

metal gear will be awesome but its not a multiplayer game

it's a tough decision
i mean xbox 360 will run me the same price as a ps3 if i get a wifi adaptor and a dvd add on just to make it comparale to ps3....
its pretty sad...

PS3 has some promising games coming out....the only thing i might warn you about is that my friend who has a PS3 tells me their updates and game release dates are always delayed.....but i have a 360 and after playing my friend's PS3 i think the PS3 should be a promising console in the long run.

Great thread, I face the same decision. The XBOX 360 seems to be the system to get right now. They have tons of games and I've heard the online experience, although a paid service, is far superior to the PS3's online gaming. That being said, the PS3 seems to have great potential and comes with a Blu-Ray player already. How fast games come out for the PS3 is another story, so I'm afraid if I buy one now, it will be out of date by the time the good games come out.

Basically my thoughts exactly

If I buy Xbox now, and the PS3 kickstarts and becomes like the PS2 again i'll be angry

If i buy a PS3 and it never materializes, then i'm screwed there as well.

Lol unfortunately the solution is not to buy both.

Rumour has it the PS3 will have DVR capabilities with an add-on:

it really depends on what you looking for. If your not into taking risks, get the XBOX360 but I personally wouldn't recommend it.

For one thing, there's a lot of small fees here and there you'd need to pay for 360 such as Live. (Whats the point gaming if there's no online these days). Also, MS always releasing issues with the 360.

With the PS3 on the other hand is pretty stable. I love their Online shopping idea where you can try demos out before going out to buy it (not sure if 360 has this). Big risk with ps3 is that like many mentioned there isn't that many games out, and there's a high risk sony might shut it down. This would of course depend on their sales for xmas this year. But, nevertheless its a good console. And, yes ps3 has VERY little games compared to others and take a long time to release them because
A) other companies are feeling the riskiness of sony shutting down the ps3 line
B) it takes a LOT longer to develop those games as compared to the wii for example.

You can really see the quality the developers put in each game thats been released. Also, i dont think you should wait until xmas or another price drop for ps3. Get it soon if you want it. Sony is planning on using cheaper materials to make the console. If you have a Costco membership, you might want to get it there. It might be a little more expensive because it comes in a bundle, but you get this "1 year warranty" where you can return it any time within the year :bana

thanks mikey. that's a really good thought you got....

lol makes the choice hard ... wow u got any links or articles regarding sonys intention to use crappier materials?

i was reading that sony will have released up to 380 games by march 2008.
seems like theres going to be a huge plethora of games soon...

Awhh took me SOO long to find it. Anyhow here it is:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/analyst/analyst-ps3-price-drop-in-07-may-be-possible-232692.php

Not exactly crappier but smaller.. and thinner.

They've done it to the ps2 too .. so it makes sense.. also, i read somewhere that the 80 gig hdd ps3 is not as great. It supports less ps2 games than ps3 not that it maters but its a 100+ cost jack up. The only good thing about it is that it comes with rumble pack.. but if you want to get it the 80 gig because its bigger, you might as well swap a SATA hdd yourself.

I didn't read all the posts, but another con of the XBox is that it breaks down. Mine, that I purchased in Nov 2006, just broke down with the dreaded red ring of death. Now I have to wait 1.5 months for a refurb replacement. BS!

MattC
08-02-2007, 11:29 PM
I had a 360 and loved it, but I would say get a PS3. Not only are almost all the new fantastic games coming out on both systems, but Sony has deals in the works with the big production houses to have console specific titles down the road.

The special processor in the PS3 has yet to be challenged and properly used, so I see in a year or so down the line games start to come out that really change the way we think of games.

not only that, you get a BluRay player out of the deal, for half the price of a off-the-shelf player in any store.

DVD's in HD are the best. go buy Planet Earth on Blu Ray, and it will make your PS3 worth while, even before you pop in a game :)

alright
i'm thinking of leaning towards the ps3

although i really want halo3 and gears of war....
but i think resistance will make up for it for the time being

not gonna buy now though

but maybe i should to avoid the stupid price increase for a subpar storage increase....

its the great 360/PS3 debate! I own a 360 myself so I maybe biased but I have played all 3 systems. PS3 just doesn't have the games right now so that is why I wouldnt get it. Plus Microsoft is starting to steal PS3 exclusives like Devil May Cry, Assassins Creed, and I think there was one more. 360 has just so many good games now and price is cheaper. While there are many problems with the 360, I own a system that was manufactured Oct 2005' and its still going strong. It does get a little hot but if you keep it at a well-ventilated place, I don't see the problem. Hope this helps and whatever you get, I am sure you will enjoy it.

Ex-Rolla
08-03-2007, 11:36 PM
I'd go for a PS3...

like many here, i have had the PS1, PS2 and currently have the PSP and PS3, so yes you can call me slightly biased in my decision ;)

Seriously though, in terms of capabilities, i would go with the PS3 simply because of the technology being used (cell/RSX/Blu-Ray) has the potential for amazing things. As it stands now though there aren't many (or any) games that really take advantage of it. Seeing that you're not really in a rush the PS3 would be a good choice.

a few features that stood out to me include...
- Built in WIFI
- HDMI support (1080p)
- Bluetooth (controllers use BT and are charged via USB)
- Bluetooth Headset (currently using my Motorola headset that also works with my cell phone)
- Can use a BT mouse and Keyboard (use it for my PC, so it makes surfing the web on the PS3 a breeze)
- Up to 7 controllers using BT
- Future controllers will have rumble.
- Free online subscription (XBL has a monthly charge albeit a small amount)
- Expandable HD (this is huge + for me as any 2.5" HD will work with the PS3)
- Can't forget the Blu-Ray drive

Keep in mind that the "rumour" is that once the 60gig PS3's stock is depleted, it will be replaced with the 80gig. the 60gig model includes the same chip used in the PS2, so technically you get a PS2 & a PS3 for the price of a PS3... chances are, this holdiay season, the 60gig will not be available. the 80gig will use software emulation for backward compatability.

In terms of content, as of now, XBOX is the way to go. I did not buy the PS3 for the games that are currently available (there are only a few that i'm currently playin)... i bought it for the games that WILL be available. Considering how happy i have been with past sony game consoles, i know i will not be disappointed with this one...

ohh and when you're not playing games, you can do society a huge favor by using your PS3 as a supercomputer (folding@home) :)

kid_icarus
08-04-2007, 12:08 AM
thanks ex-rolla. as always you provide great insight.

i've pretty much made up my mind that ps3 is the console I will go with.

Now the question is timing.

Will there be some sweet deals once christmas comes around you guys think?

There's always deals, but i don't want a BUNDLE deal with a bunch of lame games i could care less about.

Hopefully a good price drop.

Like you said, expandable hard drive is important. I don't care about paying for "hard drive" storage anyways cuz i can manually upgrade that myself.

I Just hope the quality and components are not going to be deteriorating.

Basically, is the 1st gen PS3 gonna be more stable than the 2nd gen?
Same story with the old PS2's where some models had issues with cd reader burning out and etc...

Basically, is the 1st gen PS3 gonna be more stable than the 2nd gen?

Np...

That's a tough question to answer... like any new technology, there will be improvements... as far as i know, IBM is already working on a smaller CELL chip so if that's incorporated in a newer generation PS3 along with newer (smaller) components, than the PS3 could become smaller (similar to the slim PS2). But truthfully, who knows? besides sony of course...

In terms of specials during the holidays? I have no clue... the only thing i can think of sony doing is bundling a game or two with the system...

Either way, i don't think you'll be dissapointed with the PS3

I just heard from my UPS friend that microsoft will be extending warranties for xbox 360 to 3 years. All shipping fees can be claimed. Also he told me that they will have a price drop today. I dont' know how much but it will drop. It goes for new and old systems as well.

Another thing is, i just updated my xbox 360 and now i can push out 1080p with the system for my tv. The simple update is in the newer games that will tell you to update before you can start playing it.

It's already been confirmed that the 60GB is being discontinued. This is more of a clearance as opposed to a real price drop. The current 60GB already uses software emulation to play PS2 games, like the 360 does w/ XBOX games. That's why you CAN'T play every PS2 game on the PS3, despite what Sony initially claimed.

The main thing that will decide if the PS3 succeeds or not, is how well blu-ray does vs. HD-DVD. Sony has already lost a whole heap of exclusive games, and the multi-platform games are constantly getting higher ratings on the XBOX 360 as opposed to the PS3.

The only worthwhile exclusive game available for the PS3 right now is Resistance, and the only one in the near future be Metal Gear.

the exclusive games for 360 seem to have better gameplay than games for ps3. Cant wait for halo3, gears of war 2, forza series, fable 2. Even though the ps3 is very impressive with the CELL processor, blu-ray, and WIFI and has tons of potential, I dont think i want to wait about 3 years for the games to progress. by then, you'd be able to sell the 360 and buy a ps3 at a cheaper price. Im a little biased even though ive played both systems.
