I know there is a thread on this somewhere, but It's buried somewhere in the forum by months and months (maybe even a year) of posts. So to keep it "out of the way" I've posted this in the General Lounge.
My Driving Pet Peeves (in no particular order):
People who change lanes without signalling, or worse, without looking. Signalling is as easy as a single hand movement. It's not that difficult. Those red or amber flashing lights are probably the most useful, functional lights on a car, yet people still decide not to use them. Looking where you are going can't be any harder. It's called a "BLIND spot" for a reason. Even those little convex mirrors that you can stick on your side-view's don't substitute for actually turning your head.
Travelling slower or the same speed of the flow of traffic on a multi-lane highway. My view is, if you are left of a car, you should be passing them. A car travelling in the same direction, on your right should never be pacing you or passing you. Simple as that. If you are pacing them, then you are going too slow. If they are passing you, you are going to slow. The only exception to this is obviously in heavy traffic situations, however, if the flow of traffic is going at 120, and you are going 110 in the passing lane, that is a no-no. If you are uncomfortable with going faster than the car to your right, them move over a lane and let those who are more comfortable pass you instead of holding back all the traffic behind you.
Driving with highbeams on, with traffic within visible distance. Highbeams, especially in Toronto where street lights are abundant, should be rarely used. Do you not notice that annoying blue light on the dash that tells you that you have your highbeams on? Driving with highbeams on blinds oncoming traffic and dazzles the driver. What's worse is those who drive with highbeams on ALL DAY, including during sunlight hours. Granted it's not as bad as at night since the driver is not going from dark to bright light, but still... what's the point? Drivers should be respectful and diligent enough to know when highbeams are supposed to be used, and considerate to other drivers.
Driving with headlights on during sunlight hours. OK, this isn't a big thing, but it's something I want to mention. Daytime Running Lights in my opinion, are one of the best safety concepts invented since the airbag. I love the idea of DRLs. However they don't illuminate the taillights during the day for a reason (obviously having your headlights on during the day illuminates your taillights). Many cars (including the Mazda3) use the same bulb for taillights and brake lights. Having the taillights illuminated during the day does not provide as great of a contrast when applying the brakes versus a taillight that is off then having the brakes applied. Some LED taillights embraced this idea, by having the housing completely black or clear when the lights are off and illuminating red when the brakes are applied (Think Infiniti FX45, Toyota Prius, Mazda3 LED taillights). All i'm saying is that to some people (especially older drivers) it may be harder to distinguish between a taillight and a brake light during the day since the tailllight already partially illuminates the housing.
Mis-aimed headlights. Those are just as bad as highbeams. Not only do you blind oncoming drivers, but you reduce the amount of light that gets onto the road.
Ok I'm done :chuckle

when your in a rush, and somewat speeding, and a slow person cuts in front of you, and you have to slow down for them.
old people.
i was stuck behind a old women along a good stretch of road last week. she was doing 30 in a 50 zone.
when you on the highway, making good time, and all of a sudden, you hit bumper to bumper traffic. so after sitting in traffic for a solid hour, you finally find the source of the traffic. a fender bender on the side of the road.
nothing major, just 2 cars on the side of the road, along with their drivers.

I HATE when someone cuts u off only to have to brake hard anyway cuz the person in front of that ******* slows down. Means ur always so close to an accident
also, people who use their horn way too often or too long. ****in idiots.

ok i got another one.
you know of how on the highway, how your supposed to leave a decent sized space inbetween you and the car in front of you??
well i hate it how everyone just sees that as a opening to change lanes.
i almost totalled my mazda3 on my way home from the official meet last week.
i was leaving a good 2-3 car lengths from the car in front of me.
then this van decides to merge into my lane. ok, watever.
the second he/she gets into my lane, we hit gridlock. her brake lights go on, so i figure, ok, shes just leaving some room from the person in front of her.
then im like, ok? the brake lights are still on. so i have to literally SLAM on my brakes. my ABS kicked in, and the car lost grip for a split second or so.
needless to say, i was about 2 feet from slamming into a pontiac montana.
farkin retards!!!!

I hate people who change without signalling. I don't care if you don't think anyone is close enough to you to matter. If I can see you not signalling, I am close enough.
I also hate large vehicles. So many minivans and SUV's out there, which means I can't see traffic up ahead from my Mazda 3. I was so tempted to get an SUV this time around just to avoid that trouble.
I drive a lot to get to and from work everyday. I'd say my car is comes close to getting hit or run off the road 3 or 4 times a week because of the above mentioned pet peeves. :complain
Worse contributors are:
-Changing lanes without looking
-Cutting into a fast moving lane without speeding up (is bad enough) and also not a lot of room for me to compensate by braking hard.

YES! I HATE people who brake for no reason! I am on the 401 behind another driver and he would just brake when theres no traffic in front of them! Pisses the hell out of me and puts others in danger.

someone who doesnt know how to drive a manual car...
2 weeks i was at dixie and burhamthorpe. Was waitin to make a left turn onto dixie..Car infront of me was a mercury couger. Well amber comes up and she stalls the car. Restarts her engine and stalls again. Red light comes up and we are both stuck in the intersection at 5pm. Tons of cars honking at us. She finally gets it goin and zooms off nearly hittin oncoming traffic. Im now left at the intersection with both sides of traffic zooming by. Luckily a few cars that saw what happened decided to stop and let me through. I wonder what would of happen if there was a cop there since i did turn on a red light.....oh well
If u dont know how to drive stick, stay off the freaking road especially at busy times.

Hey James_N that gives me an idea why not in these posts, list driving tips along with pet peeves,...here's a tip so people don't get stuck in that same situation; Always leave enough room between you and the vehicle in front when coming to a stop. No matter where you are, so as you can go around them if they stall or whatever.
My pet peeve is motorists who weave in and out of traffic, especially motorcyclists, because there're so hard to see...and who wants to hit a motorcyclist! ...I certainly don't because its almost certain death... it would be hard to live with.So any bike riders out there; please don't weave and try to be visible to surrounding traffic.

Another one. When you have roads that everyone knows will reduce from 3 lanes to 2 lanes, or even 2 lanes to 1 lane. Maybe there are construction signs ahead. And everyone wants to ride right up in the lane about to close, and cut back in.
But not a smooth cut-in, like merging onto the highway at speed. That would be okay. These are the cut-ins where traffic is crawling. You either have a jerk-off who gets to cut past a bunch of traffic, of a jerk-off who won't let anyone cut in front of hm.
Anyone who takes westbound Dundas in evening rush hour, from Mississauga to Oakville, over the 403 bridge knows what I'm talking about.

Luckily a few cars that saw what happened decided to stop and let me through. I wonder what would of happen if there was a cop there since i did turn on a red light.....
I was taught that only one car at a time is allowed to enter the intersection to make a left turn [and that once "in" the intersection (crossing the inner while line), the car is allowed to progress if safe to do so even when the light changes to amber (or red if one had to wait for someone running the light) ].
Yesterday I saw a really scary left turn situation...
I was waiting (to go straight) at a red light that has dedicated left turn lanes all around. The opposite direction to me has a **long** left turn green arrow (enough for a good half dozen or more cars, easily) while everyone else is red. Their arrow comes on, and the first car in the left turn lane hesitates or is slow to start making the turn. There is construction and pylons on the road it is turning into, so to be honest I don't blame it for being a bit slow just to figure out where exactly on the road it is supposed to turn onto !!
Suddenly and quickly the car BEHIND IT comes out to the left into the opposing traffic lanes and makes a left, cutting off the now-moving first car (and nearly getting hit by it) who fortunately stopped to avoid the impending collision.
As an aside, I wish there weren't so many intersections with car-tripped lights, so I could sit a bit further back from the intersection while waiting for the light to change :-)

Here's another one....
While sitting in heavy traffic on a highway, the retards that decide to jump into the ON-RAMP, just to merge back in 4-5 cars later and sit in traffic again.
I also hate the people that don't merge when the on-ramp ends, and rides the shoulder looking for a spot to get in.

my biggest pet peeve when driving is impatience. we all know the story of a colleague who was late for work and had to take this road and that road or he wouldn't make the meeting; just give yourself more time to travel. it's as simple as that. and for heaven's sake, stop running the lights.
other things: people who signal half-way through a lane change. what the heck is the point in that? you're already halfway into the other lane; chances are good whoever is behind has seen you move into that lane and *knows you're going to do it*. the whole point of signal lights is to communicate your intent to the people around you. signal first, THEN change lanes.
passing stopped cars in marked pedestrian zones (ie shopping malls), and then honking at the "idiot" stopped in the middle of the zone....hello? we're not stopped in a marked pedestrian zone for our health. chances are good there are people trying to cross the street..like the woman and kid who almost got ran over today when someone passed me without looking first. i followed her to where she parked and explained to her the same thing..

A couple of weeks ago someone in the car ahead of us held an empty plastic grocery bag out the window and then let it go - on the 427. :loco

because when driving, everyone thinks they're infallible on the road. if that was the case though, why do we all drive with insurance? :)

I agree with those who are bothered by others driving in the passing (aka the left) lane. Many drivers don't seem to realize (or care) that there is simply no reason to be in that lane unless they are actively passing another vehicle!
The worst is when two trucks decide to do this while on a 2-lane stretch of the highway - happens every time on the drive on the 401 between Toronto and London. One truck decides to pass another at 90 km/h and they block both lanes for a good 10 minutes because the truck who is doing the passing can't go fast enough to get around the other one. The cars behind then often try to make aggressive moves (like driving on the shoulder or on-ramp) to try to get around them, which is obviously a dangerous idea.
Although, perhaps that's better than the trucks (and cars) that go 150 in a freakin' snowstorm/downpour on the highway with no lights on...crazies.

Okay, but what if the guy in the right lane is driving at 110kmh. I want to pass at 120kmh, which means I'm passing very slowly. But some guy behind me wants to drive at 130 or 140kmh, so he's up my ass. And let's say the right lane has 2 or 3 or 4 cars all driving at 110kmh, with not much space for me to merge back in.
Basically, I'll take a while to pass all those cars before I get to move back to the right lane. I can't feel sorry for the guy behind me. We're all speeding illegally anyways.

Okay, I'm bored, and there's a lot of stuff that pisses me off.
- Governments that give licenses to stupid people. There really should be an IQ test before they hand over your papers.
- People that don't pay attention.
- People that think that driving is their God given right.
Breathing is a right. Barely. Driving is not.
- Reverse age descrimination.
How many old people would lose their licenses tomorrow if
they didn't have voting power?
- Our low driving standards
A skill as comprehensive as this should require mandated
training periodically, and your 75th birthday doesn't count.
- Lack of repect for fellow drivers
similar to not paying attention, I think that
most people don't consider other drivers worth
paying attention to until they almost hit them.
- People that use their cars as weapons
Take Tai Chi or something, and calm the #(@| down!
- Driving behind large vehicles
If I can't easily see through or around them, I get antsy.
- People who want to race me
- Hearing a stereo over my own
Who exactly are they playing it for?
Mine is already loud, so I don't want to hear theirs too.
- Trunk rattle
If you're spending 3-4k on the goods,
spend the few hundred on nailing it down right.
- Taking myself too seriously after a bad day
It's so easy to become as big a bonehead
as "that other guy". Sometimes I have to
hit that Easy Button on the way home
and leave it in the office.

I completely agree that nobody should feel pressured to go way above the speed limit to pass a bunch of cars - trust me, I'm no speed demon on the road either. What bugs me about the trucks is that they are often going 10 under the limit when they try to pass, and they would be just fine staying in the right lane - the difference in speed is not great enough to warrant a pass.
Plus, sometimes they see a car coming up much faster behind them in the left lane. Instead of waiting 2 seconds for the car to pass them and then trying to pass the other truck so that traffic continues to move smoothly, they often seem to just make their pass anyhow.
Just my 2 cents...

My ULTIMATE pet peeve:
PPL who don't check their REARVIEW MIRROR (not to mention the sides as well) while in the left/passing lane. I've seen cop cars totally ignored up to the point they blast their electronic horns.
Usually these drivers are on the phone, immersed in conversation with passengers, or just plain tired. Do us a favor, chit chat or be tired in the right lanes.
It's foolishness seeing this on highways. A driver in the passing lane not noticing 3 or 4 cars are lined up waiting to pass. Solution: check rearview, side view, MOOOOOOOOVE and change lanes. He/she could change back to the passing afterwards for all I care...just check the rearview often!
If you've been passed more than once by drivers in the right lane...you're too slow to be in the left/passing lane. :flaming

My two peeves:
1. Parking lots
Is it just me or is everyone treating parking lots as freeways these days? I can't count the number of times I've had to slam on the brakes while backing out of a parking spot because another driver thinks it would be too inconvenient to stop and let me out.
2. Illegal turns
I've taken to being extra careful when turning on to a street when there's also someone coming the other way. Way too often I've had to slam on the brakes because the other driver's turned into my lane.

Okay to start, your post does not explain whether you are already in the passing lane or you have moved into the passing lane to pass. Now if it is the latter of the two then I would have to say it is the responsibility of the driver who intends to pass to make sure the left lane is CLEAR and I don't mean a quick glance! you must look long enough to judge the speed of vehicles coming from behind you its called "situational awareness" and the driver must also be judging the situation in front of him before he moves to the passing lane...its not a thing of "oh well everyones speeding so I can just cut into this lane" ....its about not being the cause of a possibly serious accident. On the other hand if you have already been in the passing lane for some time and some asshat comes behind you, than it is his responsibilty to slow down till the way is clear again. But the main responsibility lies on the person who is attempting to pass.
my 2 cents.

Agree with everything you say. I would never cut in front of someone bearing down the left lane. In fact, that's a peeve of mine.
But I find this situation happens a lot on the 407, west of the 410. So many drivers speed at 140 or more, you're actually going really slow if you're only at 120. And even if the left lane is clear at first, it doesn't take long before drivers at 140 or 150 get up your ass.
You know how some think driving is a right. I think a lot of 407ers think excessive speeding is a right they pay for.

I can't see the following is a pet peeve, cause I never use that lane, but it sure does suck: Someone going 100km/h in the car pool lane during rush hour (with 1-2kms of empty space in front of them), holding up 5-10 cars.

When you're making a left turn out of a Plaza or driveway, and there's another person trying to turn left into the Plazda or driveway. You're both waiting and waiting until the path is clear. You let the guy turn left first, but he decides for some reason he's not going to move. So you go ahead with your left turn, BUT the other guy suddenly decides he doesn't want to turn left anymore, goes forward and almost T-bones.
This is the reason I failed G. Cause some idiot signals left for 5 minutes in the middle of the road, but doesn't turn into the DriveTest centre. I wait and wait and wait for him to turn, since it's the correct thing to do. But after a solid 2 minutes of waiting, I decide to make my way out of the centre, and guess what? He turns off his signals, guns it and almost hit my car. Needless to say, I was so angry I failed the test, and people like that are on the road.

People who cut in and out of traffic - especially those who don't signal.
Was behind this one Mazda 3 (stock 07 white sedan) and the way he drove was stupid. Guess he thought he was in a video game or something... just cutting in and out of traffic.
I also find people in Mazda 3's tend to speed excessively? Perhaps I just notice more.

You could say that about almost any car make....
I've seen my share of Caddies, Infiniti's, BMWs, Mercedes....
Hell, I've even seen a Smart car going 130-140 weaving in and out of traffic while the flow was only going 120 or less.
That statement can be applied to any car company that promotes the performance of their car (which is basically all of them).

I don't drive my car too often, but when I do I tend to try and play catch-up to the Mazda3's that I see on the road. The ones that I've encounter are always weaving in an out or driving excessively fast.

People who don't judge the speed of oncoming traffic when turning right. Many times I've had some guy turn into my street when I'm going fast and he doesn't step on it, forcing me to change lanes or brake. I would be less pissed if not for the fact there are no cars behind me! If he waited for me to pass first he can wait all day to turn out...and I thought I had the "right of way", geez...

lol nope. that incident happened last night as i was standing with some peeps at the tim hortons at martin grove and hwy 7. he later pulled in sitting in the back seat of his friends car. LOL he looked sooo sad
I hate when on some of the major city streets like say Yonge, Avenue, and Bathurst when it’s busy people tend to go in the right lane to pass slower traffic in the middle. I do this all the time but what annoys the hell out of me is the people that go into that lane, then drive slow and because they are afraid their huge SUV will hit the cars parked on the side of the road they end up basically a good 2-3 feet into the middle lane. So really they take up the whole damn road because they want to be able to get passed slower moving traffic but they don’t give a shit that they are slowing everyone else down behind them down.

In no particular order:
1. The morons who treat parking lots as a wide open track so when you leave a parking spot, not only do you need to check the usual Left/Right but the rear as well since any unoccupied parking spot is now treated as part of the road.
2. Back seat drivers, especially those who chose not to become licensed drivers. Unfortunately I married one.
3. Last minute lane mergers, yes those crotch-droppings who use every last cm of pavement before forcing themselves into the available lane.
4. Idiots who permit the vermin from 3) to merge.
5. The drivers who think the space between my car and the line of parked vehicles is another right of way. Its bad enough for motorcyclists pulling this stunt but for subcompacts and CUV/SUVs doing the same?!
6. Jaywalkers/self-entitled cyclists-> you cannot alter the laws of physics no matter how important you may think you are.

1. For some reason, any general contractors who drive those super-busted up GMC Safari/Jimmy vans that I encounter, will drive like an a$$. No signal lane changes, cutting people off, tailgating, general road raging and disregard for public safety.
2. Princess-Diva/Douchebag: Yacking on cellphones, smoking, eating, reaching into the back seat, and reading while driving with a general disregard to anyone else
3. Taxi drivers: Good grief, these guys will cut you off at a moment's notice then slam on the brakes. Sure you've got hours of road experience behind you, but that doesn't mean laws and rules of courtesy don't apply.
4. Tow truck drivers: Going 160km/h down a 40 road, aggressively tailgating, no signal blind lane changes, and going off-roading on curbs/sidewalks/lawns

1. I hate those people who drive a night with no lights on and when you flash them they either speed up with no lights on and i mean like speed up another 30kms or they ignore you, even after you go beside them to tell them to turn their lights on.
2. People who tailgate you on a 2/3 lane road and your NOT in the passing lane, they expect you to move for them, instead i slow down, then they change lanes and he tail gates another person even wen i leave him 3 car lengths to pass that other guy. most of the time its a jerkoff in a V8 Pickup!
3. People curising with highbeams at night! no matter wat you do, flash them, signal them, wave them off, w.e they wont turn them off! No need for highbeams on a highway or city road, those are only ment for country roads with barely any traffic and no street lights.
4. Those people with oversized subwoofers in their shitboxes and they max out the bass while listening to some rap song with the same beat for 8 minutes! its so bad that it hurts your ears and nothing you do can get rid of the pounding, its especially bad if your stuck with them in rush hour traffic! cant even drive away from the f**ker! (this one i really hate and i made a promise to myself that if im stuck in traffic with this kind of doucher, i will get out of my car and knock on his window really hard with the side of my fist and tell him what a f**king idiot he is! if he tries to attack me, i know that people will jump in cuz i know they would feel the same way! except i wouldnt do this in the jane and finch area)
5. People who cut into your lane RIGHT BESIDE YOU like they dont even notice your existence there! and even after they see you, they keep going and force you to slam on the brakes and pray no one rear ends you or push you into the next lane suddenly. (this happened to me once, guy was in a beat up minivan listening to his ipod with headphones and at a light he just looked at me and bobbed his head to the song! i was like, wat a freakin moron! his guy looked like he was in his late 30s btw)
6. tow truck drivers who dont follow any laws on the road except stopping at a red light! ive seen tow truck drivers who go 50kms faster then everyone, even on the highway, completely ignore stop signs and i mean ignore, no brake lights or anything, if anything he floored it through! (ive seen this happen at least 20 times in one year and at busy 4 way stop sign intersections!) take up 3-4 parking spaces when they go for a lunch break! they are never curtious, they always tailgate and cut people off and speed like the road is fall apart behind them! i only see this from private tow truck companies, CAA drivers respect the rules of the road and everyone it, if the truck doesnt have CAA on the side, its like the driver is allowed to do w.e the hell he wants!
BTW to those guys who said they hate the people how try to race you. get a hat that says dumbass or asshat or something insaulting, and then at a red light just hand them the hat and drive off! the perfect diss for dumb ass ricers! also for tailgaters someone should install a mini camera on the back of there car and take a picture of their license plate and have one of those LED signs saying, "i just took a picture of your license plate dumbass, thanks for being so close!" itll be an expensive mod but after those guys read that, they will back off so far, hell you dont even need a camera, just the LED sign!

Trucks. I hate trucks.
They are slow. They block my view of traffic ahead. They fling rocks.

But I still hate 'em.

Agreed. I've had people pull away from me coasting while their brake lights were lit. I always thought that was amusing. Though it does get annoying when they do the brake tap with the 5+ car gap they leave in front of them...

1) People who can't drive a consistent speed. I think the absolutely worst case of this is driving on the country roads, being stuck behind someone who seems to go under the speed limit when you can't pass, but speeds up to a reasonable speed when you finally can pass. It's like they know!
2) People who tailgate. Especially trucks (I hate looking into my rear view mirror and seeing nothing but truck grill!) or idiots that practically touch my rear bumper when we're stopped on a hill. This was especially bad when I was learning stick and was struggling with the whole roll-back thing, but not so bad now...still irksome.
3) Idiots that pass you...only to slow down to less than the speed you were doing before they passed you. That also applies to idiots that cut me off and then insist on doing 5km under the speed limit. If you're going to cut me off, you better be prepared to floor it.
4) Chicks in big SUVs that have no clue how to drive them. Get a car you can handle. Or chicks that can't drive period.
5) People who ride their brakes. Especially going down hills. The worst is coming down the escarpment, and the person in front of me rides their brakes the whole way down to stay under the speed limit. ARG!!!

People who .....crawl...... to red lights forcing everyone behind to .....crawl..... as well, which keeps anyone behind them (i.e. me!) from being able to get into the left turn in time to activate the advanced green. Which, given the traffic on Steeles in the morning, means I end up sitting through the entire light before I can make the turn.

People who think they are in the right when they cut you off.
People who cut you off you honk and they brake suddenly.
People who don't bother changing their rear lights. One woman was driving in a 99 Venture and she all of the sudden brakes and starts to turn in an intersection... but I wouldn't know SHE HAD NO REAR LIGHTS WHATSOEVER

I will tell you why. IT WAS IN TORONTO... I hate driving in Toronto. When you got women in van's just being retarded not knowing how to drive. I once had some lady on the Gardiner that thought she was better then me and well instead of realizing I was beside her HEY ILL JUMP INTO THE NEXT LANE. And almost hit me... WTF. And another woman who was yakking on her cellphone and it was a 2 lane road, she saw someone turn so instead of checking to make sure it was good to go GOES RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I had to slam on the brakes. I honked and tried yelling at her when she turned back into that lane... she was completely oblivious to anything she just did... the guy behind me was pissed too cuz he almost hit me.
