My buddy told me tints can be darker than 20 on the front sides... Is this true?

Or is this a cops choice to pull over people for illegal tints?

thanks

Darker than 20? More like you can't go darker than 35. But in the end, it's discretionary by the cop. Essentially if they can't see you through the front windows, then the can charge you.

Surprisingly, the tint laws are geared towards taking down darker coloured drivers. It's all subjectively whether the cop can get a good look at you when you're driving.

there is no set limit for tint in the front in Ontario. as you said, it is up to the cops discretion as they have to be able to make out the driver and any passengers in the front.

35% is the "accepted limit" for certain tint places since they do not want the liability if a customer gets pulled over and given a ticket.

going darker than 20% is an "at your own risk" type of thing and some shops will do it as long as you accept the responsibility. i have friends who've had 15% and 18% all around without an issue. bottom line is, don't give the cops an excuse to pull you over and you won't get booked for dark tints.

I think part of the problem is no one (not cops, or even tint shops) has any kind of measuring tool to say if a tint is 18% or 22%. You either need to know the manufacturer, or you just guesstimate...18 and 22% are considered 20%.

devices that measure the percentage of light transmittance are available (http://www.promotorcarproducts.com/pocketdet.htm) ... several US states that have defined laws on tint percentage have inspection stations that use such equipment.

i had a friend that had limo tints on his ford taurus a little while ago.
his front window just had a black bar across the top, and he never got booked.

Go for atleast 20 all around, the fact is that the windshield on the 3 lets in so much light that a 20 doesn't look that dark, ...I know I 've had it 2 years now with also a 6"- 20% band on the windshield and have never been hassled by the cops.

i also have a friend with really dark tints, and he has had no problems,

i suspect that if you keep em black and not reflective you can go pretty dark without legal problems, unless u piss off a cop by doing smtg stupid or what not, however darker tints will probably get u more attention with the cops also, they may take a second look.

it would be great if they would set a limit, and have the light transmittance detectors here!

I think it all depends on how lucky you are. If the cops are on a mission to give you a hassle, they'll do it for all the reasons including tins: there have been cases when on top of a ticket cops handed out a razor blade and made ppl scrape off their own tints right there on the spot.

Where did that happen?

wow, they gave a ticket and made them remove it?

i have heard of an ultimateum, where u either remove the front tints or get a ticket, but both . . . thats pretty harsh

I don't think they can make you razorblade them off, that isnt within their rights.

Sometimes cops figure if they say to do something that people will just do it, since their cops.

If they do anything to your car, you can sue the city, AND go after the cop through his superiors.

things like tints, that can be easily bypassed by say rolling down your windows, don't warrant that reaction.

that being said, I have 20% all around, and honestly any darker and I wouldnt be able to see OUT of my own windows at night on dark. streets.

They can't make you razor blade it on the spot. What they can do is tell you your car is unsafe for the road and make you tow it away.

Not true. Whether they are allowed to make you or not, I knew a guy that travelled to the U.S. and this happened to him. First he got pulled over for a radar detector (not sure what state he was in), but then they made him peel off the tint right there.

If someone ever told me to scrape it off, there's no way I would do it lol.

i think we all know that there's a huge difference between what they are allowed to do and what they actually DO. same applies not only to cops but to pretty much anyone, however it's really irritating when you come across a power tripping cop, who thinks he can make you do whatever he wants just on the basis of him having a badge.

personally, if this would've happened to me, i would rather tell him to do it himself if he thinks that's within his authority and then report and sue his a$$.

I was told at FX auto that the legal limit was 30% when I asked. 35% probably is the accepted one. but I think you can push the envelop a bit more with 30% being they aren't all that different.

the way i hear it is they dont force u to remove it.

they give you the option,

they say remove it, and i wont give you a ticket, leave it and i will

then it is ur choice to remove it.

at least that his how it usually goes down

Probably $110 like most other infractions.

I've always had tint as dark or darker than 15% alll around.
I've been pulled over for other reasons (minor stuff) and it all comes down to respecting the police officer. If an officer walks up the car, both of the windows on that side are all the way down, so they see I have nothing, or nobody to hide. It's never come up, never been an issue. Hell my plates have tinted covers on them too and I never get bothered for it. Bene tailed by police MANY times (just an occurence in traffic, etc).

Just to be sure, open up all of the windows on the side from which the police officer is approaching. This way the officer will be reassured that you aren't hiding anything (this will ease their mind a bit when approaching an unknown vehicle), and, if they can't see your tints, they can't ticket you. :D

^^^ so your saying open your window and the passenger window behind you? or all d windows of d car too? lol

bluntman
08-08-2007, 05:01 PM
The one behind you is enough, so they can see inside when they approach your car. However, if two officers approach your vehicle from either side, well, you're in deep $hit, so open up both sides.

just open the 2 front windows, as those are the only windows the discresionary law applies to.

It's gonna be hard to open windows in Canadian winter. :chuckle
