View Full Version : Why Exhaust? It's kind of useless isn't it?

For most people, the first mods they do to better their cars' performance is to change the intake and the exhaust. But my question is, changing the exhaust doesn't add any significant HP to your car. All it does is add the noise.

Is this the real reason why people change their exhaust? To get a louder more agressive sound out of your car?

If I was to increase the performance and just add and intake and not change the exhaust, will the intake work just as effeciently?

Sorry guys, I am a "Mod-Virgin".

Changing the exhaust allows the fumes to evacuate from the cylinders and exhaust pipe quicker which allows for some gains in horsepower. If you change the headers with the exhaust the increase is even better. When you change your exhaust muffler you should be changing the pipe the comes from the engine to the muffler. The increase in size allows from quicker gas flow out.

But your answer is partly right.

ditto,

if you move from natural aspiration, u will find better gains with an exhaust

but for some the pleasure of driving is increased by a deep grumble from the rear

:P

I know that it would increase the HP by a bit. Everything I know about modding (not much) comes from playing Gran Turismo on the Playstation! :)

I just think that considering price VS gains. The $300 intake will make a much more gain than the $700 cat-back exhaust.

Again, the CAI gain is minimal as well if you can't exhaust the back pressure that occurs during the exhaust stroke. Think of it as a 100 guys runing through a 5 feet wide corridor to lay a beating on Broli. Now increase the corridor size to 8 feet wide and you can see the results.

Broli

truth is for our car,

neither make much gains

my guess would be 5 tops from both, prob more like 3

but, if it makes the driving experience more fun, the car seems to have more pep!

the result would be the same, u would have 100 dead people, and 1 Broli remaining strong!

u saw the movie 300 . . . same idea, except i wouldnt die!

hey hey, i was on and off topic!

so that is still on topic!

now

lets keep this on topic

perhaps centro will tell us what exhuast/intake he is thinking

and centro if u really wanna know what these will do,
dyno ur car now, and then after the addtion of CAI or exhaust and see what the difference is!

haha. You know what I thought of last night, I was thinking about upgrading my sound as well, and Selective Sound told me that they can install the aftermarket HU in the ashtray section! I know a guy installed it in the cig lighter compartment but I think it can be done in the one below it too.

But I was thinking last night that to hide the aftermarket deck, maybe they can even install it so that I can keep the stock flap door so that I can hide it after detaching the faceplate.

This would be nice wouldn't it?

I wonder if this thread will be moved?!

Well, I wasn't really thinking about getting these mods done right now since I've just paid in full for this used 2004 car. So I am kind of short on cash as I took a big hit on my savings. I was just kind of wondering why people change the exhaust. I don't really like to be too loud with my car.

The first thing I will do to my car to start off easy is to change the map and dome lights to pure white or blue. And maybe adding an LED strip near the feet for some mood lighting. But I don't want to it flash with my music like the other guy! :)

The first bigger 'mod' will be adding an aftermarket deck. Kenwood any good?

BTW, is that you in the pic?

Exhaust is pretty much for sound and looks on an NA car. Gains are so minimal that they are insignificant.

adding an intake and exhaust will increase flow, because the stock exhaust and intake are really restrictive.
so i found that after i added the intake and exhaust to my car, i got an extra 80km's in the city and 150ish on the highway.

i think the savings in gas have just about paid for the exhaust and intake if u ask me lol.

plus they both sound wicked lol

Are you serious? I didn't know changing your intake and exhaust can save gas too? This would be the significant gain in these two mods.....not the HP but saving gas!

i got it just for the sound. the engine does run smoother now. so that is a bonus. however, when i did get it, i wasnt too worried about the performance aspect of it. it wasnt a performance car to begin with.

thats why you should by my oem mazdaspeed exhaust :chuckle, and add one of ssg's universal high flow cats for even more gains than the cbe from mazda :bana more power, same noise, less cash :bana2

In theory it does. The problem is that most people with the intake and exhaust love the new aggressive sound they get so they take every opportunity to rev the engine and plant their accelerator pedal to the floor to hear it. In the end the fuel economy you get is negated by the "new driving style" they adapt. It's just human nature.

dentinger

ya thats the only thing.

i find myself revving first gear much higher, or smashing second....
and the odd time, just revving it to hear the intake/exhaust.

so if your driving habits stay the same, your gas mileage will increase...

Amen to that. lol.

I know with my intake, header and cat-back i feel quite a difference in power. Vibrant "says" you get about 20hp with their header + cat-back. But how true that actually is i couldn't tell you. But it does have much more zoom zoom.

i can prove it with the dyno sheet i have here.

I'de like to see that. I have a hard time believing a header and CBE will yield 20 more hp on the 2.3L engine.

bubba1983

he mentioned "about" 20hp...reminder, i was the car that vibrant used when test fitting their header and so on, they did all dyno's, so their statements are true.

Skarbro
08-28-2007, 08:18 AM
You'll forgive me if I'm still skeptical! I still have a really hard time believing 20hp from just a header and CBE. Vibrant (and a lot of other aftermarket parts companies) doesn't exactly have the greatest reputation with thier HP claims.

10hp would be somewhat more believable.

But I'm still open to the dyno sheets.

I will see if I can find it, but I think that guys running the Draxas and a test pipe were getting 12WHP... thats quite the difference I would say.

lol.. why? are you waiting for the "get bubba a intake" fund raiser? :p

guess the 18hp is without intake. :) so perhaps I (and/or yourself) should get the fujita since it seems to get the best gains :bana.

Though Injen sounds SWEET. and I can say that from experience :bana2

Mines not a good representation at all. The previous owner had a different resonator in it to change the sound a bit and quiet it. Now with the boost it is even quieter... I am in love with it now. I liked it before, now its just subtle, and rumbles.
