I have a 350W power supply with an Asus Motherboard. I had 2 IDE drives and 1 Sata drive (no raid set up).

On the weekend I replaced 1 of the IDE drives (20GB) with a Sata drive (500GB) (still no raid set up). Now when I turn on the computer I get an error message that says:

=============================================
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
=============================================

After I reboot my computer boots up just fine..
after turning on my computer I went into the bios and my ide drive (the drive with windows on it) is not detected.. everything else is detected.. my initial thought is that there isn't any power going to the ide drive yet but I'm not sure..

so, my only thought right now is to change the power supply as I only have a 350W power supply but I have no idea if that's the problem..

does anybody have any thoughts or know how to fix this?? I already tried googling this but so far I haven't seen anybody with the same problem.. people have been seeing this error message but for a totally different reason..

any help is appreciated!!

So you have an IDE with windows on it and you replaced the other IDE with a SATA one?

Did you check the master/slave jumper settings on the drives?

yeah.. my 2 ides were set to master and slave.. I replaced the slave.. I left the master drive (with windows) set to master.. I don't use cable select as I don't really see the point..

and the sata drives don't have jumpers (or do they??).. as far as I know they're just plug and play type of drives..

If the IDE isn't showing up at all, then it may be some other problem. And no, the SATA drives don't have jumpers, its all plug and play. I would imagine that if you have IDE set as master, SATA plugged in, and the boot sequence set to the IDE before the SATA, it would work.

I just read that some guy changed his IDE drive to cable select and it worked.. I guess I'll go home and give that shot.. seems odd but I'll give it a shot..

It seems odd that your master IDE would stop being recognized once you install a SATA drive. Besides changing the jumper on the afflicted drive to cable select, will the computer boot back up if you remove the sata drive?

oh, I actually haven't had time to muck around inside my computer yet.. I'll give that a shot tonight and see what happens.. but I assume it would..

man, I've never had a problem I couldn't fix.. this one is stumping me.. I just asked the IT guy here at work and he said 350W should be plenty.. I did check the bios and everything looks to be fine (except the missing IDE drive)..

ok.. I got it to work!!

the hd is a western digital harddrive.. the settings are slave, master (w/ slave), and master (w/o slave).. and since I had an ide drive plugged in it was set to master w/ slave.. sheesh.. so problem solved.. thanks for all suggestions!!
