I am with Fido, I bought my O2 from SimStar at Pacific Mall. No special applications, just what came with it. I just need it to store information and appointments, occasionally surf the net and on rare occasions, take notes during meetings (I pull out my Bluetooth keyboard for that). I am thinking of changing to something with a built-in keyboard; the virtual keyboard is a PITA for texting and the phone's keybad disappears during a call.

I would love to see you post a link of a 399.99 PDA with GPS and a phone built in...

You get a PDA with a phone functionality, but you look for paying 549.99 699.99 on it. Plus it doesn't state it even has GPS.

While using the Mio P550 Digiwalker, I love the detail and percision it shows while driving... Although I cant figure out how to update maps, I think it is worth the money. It fits under my rear view mirror quite nicely, and asthetically from the top of the windshield it isn't noticeable.

I can upgrade mem with a gig or 2

So far its a great unit.

Hey Bluntman

Sorry to hear ur O2 died

How do u like it?

Is it unlocked?

I couldn't believe (and I don't understand) what happened, but it everytime I turn it on it is stuck on the bootload screen. I brought it around to some shops at Pacific Mall, but all of them shook their head when I showed it to them.

The Touch is very nice, it's thinner than I had expected and the telephone reception and audio quality is 10x better than my O2. I dredded typing out a text message on my O2 (using the stylus), but there is a third party on-screen keyboard app that I downloaded that let's me thumb out a message like on a Blackberry.

I paid $560 cash at Digital Mode (I think that's the name of it) in Pacific Mall. If I paid debit, they would have charged me $560 plus taxes; they didn't accept credit cards. When I came back to the store with cash in hand, another customer was looking at the phone (it was the only one they had). The saleperson said that if I had not returned, he was going to sell it to the other customer. Knock on wood.

Unlocked? Yes.

Now I just need to find a good case for it that doesn't screw up the touch feature.

I highly doubt it. You may want to try Softpocket (www.softpocket.ca) downtown in the Bay & Gerrard area. I picked up a silicone skin from them yesterday for my Touch, it was either that or a crystal case, their leather ones added to much bulk to the Touch.

I have TomTom 2006 on my Dell X51v. Works GREAT! Way better than the Coolnavi/Horizon software I have in the MS3.

I took the X51v all over Europe, even Ibiza island and everything worked great!

I also have a Spectec Bluetooth SD-slot GPS...so I don't have to use the Dell GPS kit anymore...with an extra-capacity battery, I could go a whole day without charging it, have GPS/mp3 in EU and NA!

and yes, it will run both portrait and landscape with tomtom, but it's a function of the PocketPC rather than tomtom...

I never "integrated" the PocketPC into the car, but as is, the Dell worked fine with the iRiver FM transmitter I've used with it.

I haven't plugged its audio out to the MS3's AuxIn, so I don't have first hand experience about that.

The mount you have there on the bottom looks like some I've had in mind if I was to integrate it into the car. But then again, depending on location of all the plugs, you may end up with a real hack job that will take away the portability of the device. Having said that, if you can find a good way of hiding the bulky mount to allow for landscape viewing and your wires aren't all over the place (like I had in the G35 when i first got it...one to charge the PocketPC, one to keep the GPS receiver charged since it's tehre anyway, and a third one to get the audio to the FM transmitter).

Good luck!

I'm using the ASUS A636N. It's bigger than most other pdas but I guess that's because it comes with a gps unit built in and has a larger screen?? not sure but I like it. it comes with the Destinator 6 software. it's not bad. I wish I had some other software to compare it too. the volume on this thing can go really loud so there's no need to connect to your car speakers. I got this from dell.ca. they have newer models now if you're interested.

it came with wm5 but I got a free upgrade to wm6. I just downloaded it from asus' website. the accessories that are worth mentioning that it comes with are a cradle, charger (plugs into the cradle), and a car adapter. you can flip the screen sideways which would flip the Destinator software but that's an option from the pda/OS. the version of Destinator that it comes with has been modified a bit to work with the buttons of the pda. so you can use the buttons to change the volume and zoom in/out.

besides the size of this thing I'd say it's a good buy.

Not to mention it comes factory sim unlocked for worldwise use. Got it on sale from dell.ca for $459.99 and it came witha 2 GB kingston mini sd card. Phone features include bluetooth, wi-fi, touch screen, voice commander, pc-sync and much more. Check out the specs at dell. Not bad for an all in one unit

I have the CDMA (bell) HTC Touch. Officially its called the vogue by HTC, but bell calls it touch b/c more people know what it is.

Its worlds better than the GSM version. THe Screen is better, the battery life is the same, and it has a 400mhz processor for the Pocket PC portion instead of a 200mhz one that the GSM Version has.

GPS has to be enabled by using the Sprint or Alltel Firmware - Bell and telus cripple theirs.

I also have GSen installed on my Diamond. Running TomTom7 in landscape on it, it's exactly the same as my Tom Tom XL One, but with a slightly smaller screen.

I am actually just on the basic plan right now, no data.

There are enough unlocked wireless routers for me to tap into :chuckle

Currently, the radio on my phone will not run 3G on the 850 band. I am waiting for the next radio release.

lots of cooked romss and radio updates on XDAdevelopers, i am afraid of bricking my phone with that stuff, think i will get the data pkg in Aug it seems like an extremely good deal & can't pass it up. $100 plan for $30

just can't seee myself driving around looking for unlocked wifi routers. done it a couple times. got tired of stopping and starting all the time.

Good luck & enjoy. Google "pocket pc freeware" for applications, but i am sure you know that already

anyone familiar with the moto q9h? I just got it free from fido and want to use the gps feature on it. I want to try garmin mobile xt. Does anyone know if I have to unlock the GPS receiver to work with any other software besides telenav or google maps which u have to pay for monthly?

google maps should work w/o having to unlock anything or do anything to your phone. the only thing you have to do is configure it with a bluetooth GPS receiver (does it come with one built in?) u have to pay for the data usage that it need to update the maps.
you should be able to use it with tom tom as well I don't think that you need to do anything

don't quote me on this though

So a bizzump for some screenshots from my device. I picked up an HTC Touch on Telus and have been busy customizing it.

So far I've got iFonz (http://freewareppc.com/utilities/ifonz.shtml)running since I like a simple icon-based interface. I'm not finished customizing the icons but I'm getting there. And what's that in the background lol?

http://i38.tinypic.com/25kmt5h.jpg

Swipe left or right to get to another set of icons:

http://i33.tinypic.com/2d1u03o.jpg

I've got S2U2 (http://www.ac-s2.com/) (Slide2Unlock) running as well, which features full-screen callerID and photoID, and also turns off the screen during a call.

http://i34.tinypic.com/2v2iedu.jpg

This also shows most important notices so you don't have to unlock the phone to find them.

Then I've got iContact (http://www.supware.net/iContact/)for my contacts list, more finger friendly. It seems like a bit of a cop-out to have so many iPhone-like apps, but I have to hand it to Apple in terms of simple and effective interfaces which look good. Plus they're all freeware lol.

http://i34.tinypic.com/t52iza.jpg

I got MyCalculator (http://freewareppc.com/calculator/mycalculator.shtml)as a replacement for the ugly stock one:

http://i34.tinypic.com/otkqvm.jpg

And Tenki (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-tenki.html)for my weather app, as I couldn't seem to get iFonz to load the stock HTC weather app.

http://i38.tinypic.com/14v7e34.jpg

And last but not least, I'm using Funambol (https://www.forge.funambol.org/download/)to sync between Thunderbird (which is where my main calendar is stored), the mobile Outlook calendar, and a shared calendar with my fiancee. I used Outlook on my PC to input all my contacts (which are separate from my endless email contacts in Thunderbird), and the mobile Outlook manually checks for new emails when I need them.

Phew!!

I have the ever popular iPhone. I know it's not really a PocketPC but hey it's got pretty much all the same features as any PocketPC does.

My friend also has one on Pay As You Go. Figure that one out.

What I like about the iPhone:
-The text messaging style (it's a he said, you said back to back thingie- the main reason I got the phone because I'm a big texter)
- Applications- the many free ones I have and the few I've paid for. They make my life interesting.
-The touch capabilities

What I dislike about the iPhone:
-Its battery life!!!!!!!!! My god, if I'm using my phone non-stop on an application it's gone in 3-4 hours.
- The auto correction feature on the keypad. It capitalizes lol, makes **** into duck and it never remembers your preferred settings. It will remember obscure things (like weird names) but it will not remember your preferences on certain words :flaming:bang

dudes...nothing worse that when my friends show me how their HTC-whatever can work like my iPhone...come on! the HTC/PPC/WinMo platform is not bad for what it is...installing these shitty iPhone skins only HIGHLIGHTS the fact that it's inferior to the updated interface of an iPhone...it's like putting a Mugen/TRD sticker on your Mazda...

11-27-2008, 01:30 AM
Hey I'm not saying that Windows Mobile is a better interface - that's the whole reason I went to an iPhone-like skin! But I'm locked in with Telus (and hate Rogers for customer service), and the HTC was a very cost-effective solution for me where I can easily customize the interface (see my car for another example of my customizing philosophies lol). So sure, its not an iPhone and I don't claim it to be. Props to Apple for having great design/interface people.

Fobio

to each their own...

I have both, and I never wish for my PPC to look like my iPhone and vice versa...and yes I do customize my PPC to be different than what is "stock" but to enhance the WinMo platform...specifically, what I'm saying is that when you put an iPhone skin on a WinMo/PPC, the execution is usually bad enough that it just make it look worse than a normal, cool WinMo skin...

on another note, I now have TomTom7, Garmin XT and iGo8 on the PPC...I still like TomTom best, but might try out the TTS option of the Garmin...

has anyone ever tried to hook their PPC to read the OBD2 signals?

If you're on a Windows Mobile, and primarily an HTC device.. then www.xda-developers.com (http://www.xda-developers.com) is by far, hands down one of the best forums for Windows Mobile/HTC devices, as well, equally as good, there is www.ppcgeeks.com (http://www.ppcgeeks.com). :)

So I wanted a bit of a different look to my HTC casing. However I don't like silicone or other add-on cases, so I went a different route. On a lark I went to Canadian Tire since I remembered they used to have a fake carbon fibre vinyl available (don't ask how I know). However I found an even better one which looks a bit more realistic (and is slightly transparent so when you place it over coloured surfaces the underlying colour comes through).

Wrapped it around my HTC front and back (took the back cover off to do it). Once you lay it on you can use an exacto-knife to trim out the parts you don't want covered. Then used a heat gun to help wrap the edges without wrinkles (that just happened to be on sale too!).

The finished product:

not bad...i can see you put in the time to make it look nice too...

I suppose some of the knife marks aren't as bad when viewed in person...or is it from the random white dust you just so had on a mirror? :whoa

I didn't take any time to set up a white box that I sometimes use for "product shots" and the mirror (table) was a little dusty. There's really only one extra "score" on the front which as you can see is the lower right button.

rogers is trying to get me to sign up for an additional 3 yrs.

Walking into a rogers store they will give me a prive of $549 from regular price of $599. A new custmoer can get it for $249.

I also have them calling me and the best price they will give me seeing that i am already a cust is $299.

I think Rogers should get their act togerther IMO.

Been a customer for over 10 yrs and they still give crap deals on their phones.

Anyone can get me a better price, which i doubt, i would love to hear from you.

Looks like they are mostly dealing in rate plans other than hardware upgrades.

I like my plan right now, all be it $70 some odd dollars a month, my plan suites me so far.

I just don't get how new cust can get better deals on hardware than exsisting cust?

Where is our perks for loyalty?
