I have a 2.3L 5 speed. I want to change the clutch/transmission oil oil this week to full synthetic. Not sure what brands you all use and who to buy it from.
I understand the shifts are a lot smoother with the synthetic oil.
Thanks

And there are probably more threads on gear oils.
I think the popular ones are Redline MT-90 (which I currently use) and Royal Purple.
cta patrique (and probably some other sponsors on this forum) sell gear oil.

So manual tranmission cars use gear oil. The person at Canadian tire told me I can use regular motor oil but that did not sound right.

Here's a tip; Read your owners manual for info like that.Don't ask idiots who don't have a clue...Info for Manual transmission;
Any temperature;
API service; GL-4 or GL-5,
SAE; 75W-90.
You'll need 2.87L (3.03 US qts)...if you go Royal Purple/Redline Synthetic, I believe you'll need to buy 4 (US) qts.

And.. you can't just buy a GL-5 75w90 oil and assume it is ok. I looked at Castrol Syntec 75w90 GL-5 gear oil that partsource sells, and the specification sheet states it is suitable for manual transmissions without synchros. My understanding is, if you put that type of oil in, it will ruin the brass synchros.

a lot of GM, Chrysler, Honda, Mini Cooper, etc (http://www.amsoil.com/products/transmission/transfluid_rec.aspx) cars take a manual transmission fluid with a viscosity of 5w30 ....hence the CT guy talking out of his ass and not knowing that other imports (i.e. Mazda, Nissan) use 75w90 GL-4 fluid in the transmission.

Interesting...I did not know this.
I though that the API rating of GL-4, GL-5, etc. are the specification which rates the oil for use with certain metals/synchros and therfore any GL-4 or GL-5 should work with our cars since that's what Mazda recommends.
(As a side note, I believe Redline MT-90 is GL-4 and it is safe for synchros)

I decided about 20k ago to try Redline MT-90 as I was experiencing notchy shifting,...prognosis; it worked great thru the cold winter months and the shifting is much smoother, so a BIG +1 for the Redline....well worth the extra expense since I shouldn't have to change it ever again.

For those of you that changed the transmission fluid for the 5spd, did you just drain and refill or did you actually remove the transmission oil pan? I'm such a nub.:blush

What's a nub? ...j/k
With the manual tranny its just a drain plug, no pan...that's the easy part, the hard part is getting the oil back in....its a beech.

Yeah, the way I did it was to by some PVC hose at CT and a funnel. Thread the hose down through the engine compartment, and into the fill plug.

We carry it, and in fact have it regularly in stock since it's so popular.
Drop me a PM if you're interested.
