Just wondering ... without looking into it much ... but with the current GM strike ... is it possible that they will actually end up posting a profit for once due to increased savings from the plant shut downs??

hehehe.... I doubt it.

My Aunt works there, and my uncle. They are laid off right now due to the strike, and love it. They were planned to be laid off from Oct - Nov of 08! 10 months, and they love it. Must be nice to get more than 80% pay, and NOT go to work!

Too much fixed / overhead costs and loss revenue from potential sales due to delays.

they may not post proffit per-se because all their employees are still getting >80% pay but this will let gm flush some of their huge inventory due to the fact that the auto union prevents lines being halted or stopped when inv gets high because it means no work for the workers.

That would be terrible for our (North American) economy.

Strike?

All I see on the news is a bunch of union workers hanging around in the parking lots of the plants doing nothing. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that is evidence of a strike.

The shortsightedness of GM and the workers is amazing. They totally deserve each other.

I actually do feel a little sorry for GM workers though. By all accounts, the GM pension fund is the single largest underfunded private pension plan in the world. The deficit there is estimated at over $100 billion.

That's a lot of GM workers that won't be getting the pension they think they're entitled to.

Strike has come and gone, settled tentively today. But let's get some things strait here; 1./ GM (US) would loose an estimated $100 million a day during a strike. 2./ Striking workers are not paid 80% of their pay and are not paid by the company, they are paid 'strike pay' by the union;(estimated to last 3 months) which comes from a slush fund paid into by the union members.Strikes in most cases are a loose-loose situation for both parties...and if GM were to "pack-it-up" as so nicely suggested by one of the posters, better have a good government job because it would ruin our nice hot economy.

It's underfunded because GM was held ransom to meet demands that they couldn't possibly meet...and so (gasp!) they haven't.
