Getting Weird Phone Calls

I've gotten a few phone calls saying that I'm gonna be arrested for using limewire. It sounds like its a recording on the other end and he says something like:

I am Special Agent Moses and you will be under arrest for using limewire/downloading illegally. You will be contacted shortly about your arrest. Best of luck with your case.

He doesn't say my name or any personal information.


Is this just some prank call?

i would assume its a prank call. because wouldnt you think if they were going to contact you about your arrest they would just go ahead and do so, along with being legal about it with introducing themselves and defining the actual lay that you may have been in violation.

oh, and wouldnt they just arrest you in person or do so by the means to a summons to court,

But do the police even call people on their cell phones telling them this stuff and do ppl put so much effort into prank calls that they call so many times? I also got a text message which I am not sure is related or not.

yea...i thought of that and i was sure it was one of my buddies cause his voice sounded exactly the same, but he was somewhere where he couldnt make a phone call when the call came and the number is known/ withheld.

my friend just downloaded a voice modulator dealie, that lets you change the tone of your voice in real time. so its hilarious in prank calls...

just an fyi, my friend is white, and he sounded like a fat black guy when he changed his voice around. it was great.

How does it actually work? Do the police normally have a warrant and go to the persons house or do they summon them to court? I'm just trying to get all the facts.

I don't think that they would phone someone on their cellphone and give them a message. Is this correct?

from my understanding you can't be arrested for downloading music... you can only be fined by the music companies, but this only applies to the states... and imo if you are going to be arrested, they wont warn you since that gives you time to run, they'd just show up at your house with a warrant.. i've been caught in a sting at simonston park before with a few friends and the cops just approached us but realised we weren't doing anything wrong so they let us go after watching us for a few days with an unmarked minivan

Oh, and around.. shit! 15ish years ago, some friends called a mutual friend who was known to download a lot of stuff off BBS sites, porn, music where he could get it etc. Someone called him feigning to be with the RCMP task force or whatever. Buddy formatted his entire pc minutes later. hahaha.

It is not illegal to download or copy in Canada for personal reasons. That is why our media (CD-R's etc.) contain a hidden levy which is paid to the companies that produce music, etc.

It IS illegal to share copies of music/movies etc. though. So as long as you don't upload, you are not doing anything illegal in Canada.

honestly I wouldn't be too concerned.... first off if the police were to leave you a message.... they would leave everything their name, number and extension and even their badge or id number.... *this is from what I've heard not experienced (looks up)* :blush

so I wouldn't be too concerned, secondly if you are a little nervous call your cellular telephone provider, and ask them about the origin of the call as you are a little nervous and see what they can do about it....

I'd google your phone number on the net and google to see where it shows up and google to see if this is a known scam going around... These days people are SPAMMIng with VOIP cause its way cheap and you can do it without long distance charges by purchasing a local number for next to nothing.. worst case scenerio contact phonebusters.com RCMP and cometition beauro of canada...
