View Full Version : Loudness of Mazdaspeed3 exhaust on Mazda3 vs. Speed3

Hi everyone,
I recently installed a Mazdaspeed3 exhaust on my Mazda3 hatch and realized that it is substantially louder than the same exhaust on the Speed3. I thought I was imagining things until MattC said the same thing.
Anyone know why the exhaust is nearly twice as loud on the Mazda3? It must be something in the pre-cat portion of the exhaust as everything from the cat-back was changed.
Also, having changed the exhaust, I feel that my powerband has shifted to a higher RPM. Any way to resolve both the loudness and powerband issues?
Tnx
ur talking about 2 diferent cars here
also the speed has 100hp more then a mz3
plus that snaill they call turbo =/

That's easy, just put the original exhaust back on :chuckle .......j/k

Part of it is also due to your car not having a Turbo, which in itself acts as a noise deadener.
You may want to consider welding in an aftermarket muffler or resonator into the exhuast, that'll help you on the noise side of things.

Good point on the turbo...
Patrique, would a new muffler help bring the powerband to a lower rpm as well? The exhaust already has two resonators, don't think we can fit another one on. :)

Doubtful on the powerband issue :(

That's too bad. I am starting to enjoy the noise, but I miss my low-end torque.
Any suggestions what can improve the low-end? Of course, not including 1. Get a turbo or 2. Put the stock exhaust back on. :)

Thow a short ram intake in the car?

powerband has shifted due to the bigger exhaust pipe diameter.
do you have any aftermarket intake on the car right now?

I've already got a Fujita CAI.
Seems that the power my car used to make at 2500rpm has shifted to about 4000.

The reason that Joe recomended a short ram intake is because you will get back a little throttle response/torque feeling with one. The cai won't help that very much.

I rather not mess around with the intake and prefer to play around with the exhaust. After all, the exhaust is the cause for this so the solution has to be there.

did you say that you added a hi flow cat or no?
WeatherB

Nope, we re-installed the cat from my stock Mazda3 exhaust.

that might help, but then again i am not 100% sure.... not much for one of those generic high flow magnaflow cats

My understanding is that the powerband shifted upwards because of a reduction in backpressure.
Would changing to a high-flow cat reduce the backpressure even more?

most likely i suppose even though in a dyno you might make more tq. overall

I noticed that when i floor it, right off the bat i almost lose front wheel traction, but when I am accelerating, I seem to do it faster than before.
on a positive note, i forgot my pass card at home today, and normally thats a big deal at my work because you have to go through security at the front gate, but the guard recognized the sound of my exhaust, and was like "naw man no worries, ive heard your car before!" :chuckle

LOL.
I wonder whether I'm imagining things again. Anyone know where I can do one run on a dyno?

Shoot, too late for me to join in.
Can anyone recommend a dyno place which will do 1 run for cheap (say around $30)?

just a question where did you get that exhaust and how much? I am looking for a cat back and am leaning towards a vibrant setup.

I got the exhaust off a member of this forum. The Mazdaspeed exhaust was far less than a vibrant setup.
Look around for one here or on Mazda 3 Forums, should be able to get one for around $200US (or $201CAN. hehe) shipped.

Someone on the Mazda3Forums was kind enough to dyno the Mazdaspeed3 exhaust.
He took off the 2nd cat, but managed to get an increase of 10HP. I assume we'd get around 7HP extra with the 2nd cat still there.
Here are the dyno results. http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=90437.0
I'm going to try and find a dyno place tomorrow to check mine.

arent our cars supposto have like 156-ish hp stock?
do those dyno results mean its all lies and it only puts down 125 stock?
anyone here with a 2.3 ever dyno?

Under perfect conditions, our cars would generate 156HP at the flywheel. I believe the stock 2.3L will dyno around 125HP.
That link includes an exhaust, CAI, and header. The header is supposed to increase power quite a bit.
I'm going to call Redline Performance in a few minutes to see how much they charge for a dyno. Might stop by after work tomorrow if the prices are good.

Redline wants $100 for 1 hour, and that's the minimum charge. They also won't allow you to split the 1 hour across multiple days.
Anywhere in Toronto which can do it for about 1/2 that?
MattC
10-01-2007, 11:09 PM
Or see if they will do a few cars in that hour, then split it with someone?

Yep, once they have the belts lined up for like models it isn't a big deal to jump in and out..... and with na you can do 2 or 3 pulls back to back within an hp or two of each other
WeatherB

Good idea. I'll give them a call and find out.
Anyone interested in 2 pulls for like $50 (plus tax)?

Just called them. They do not allow you to split.

Alright, here is an update...
Went for a long trip this weekend and towards the end of the trip, I (and my passengers) were nearly deaf. I guess exhausts aren't for everyone, so I am going to change back to the stock next week, but keeping the Mazdaspeed tip.
Jimmy, get ready for a call from me on Tuesday. :) And anyone interested in a Mazdaspeed exhaust without the tip, PM me.
