View Full Version : 04-06 A way to make your hight beams your DRL's and have your HID Work as well!
Here is a better way to do the bypass you need 2 SPDT Relays 1 for each side you can get them at Canadian Tire for about $8.00 each with wiring harness. This is the best way to do it since you don’t have to do anything to your relay you have setup already for your HID’s and your Flash to Pass works right with this mod so you don't have to take apart your steering console.
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/9617/drlmh6.jpg
With the DRL on since the SPDT relay has no power coming from the parking lights it defaults to sending power from 30 to 87a and thus your DRL Power is transferred to your high beams. And when the car is off there is no power coming from your low beam positive wire your DRL will be off lights will be off.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3664/lightsonpq4.jpg
Now with your lights on your parking light is on and sends voltage via 86 to the relay causing it to send voltage from 30 to 87. Where is by default if there is no voltage on 86 the relay defaults to connect 30 to 87a.
Now that 30 is connect to 87 the voltage goes nowhere.. and this is what you want so your high beams will not be on all the time when your lights are on.

This looks curiously like McGuyver's new DRL mod that he came up with a month ago...

I have this mod on my car but instead of the highbeams, I'm using the fogs as the DRLs.

yep I have been using it for a few months now and it works great.. just thought I would post it since no-one had put up any pic's of the circuit.. and there where so many people having problems understanding how it works.! hope these pic's help to make it a bit easier.

McGuyver is working on a proper walk-through. We took like 50 pics during the install. Nice job with the circuit drawing.

1 and 2 -> 85 and 86
87a and 87 --> 3 and 5
30 --> 4

I don't get it. With the lights on diagram, I don't see how it turns on the headlights? Unless 87 (nothing) is supposed to be tapped into the headlights (+)? I think that's what you are getting at? Very simple.

This Relay is just for your DRL to your High beams so you don't want 87 connected to anything. your other relay you already have setup up sends the power to your HID's

I just tried to rough this in and when I did it I only used one relay and it worked for both sides?
yes I noticed that as well. but I used a relay on each side to be safe.. since I don't think one DRL Modulator was meant to drive both lights since the car has a modulator for each side.

Well I finished it finally. And it works as described ,with the exception of the high beam light on the dash stays lit while the DRL are on, it goes off when the hids are on . I can confirm that the high beams are running at a reduced power.......finally!!!!

Is there a way to disable that high beam light on the dash?

Take out the bulb. :)
Or you can run your fogs as the DRLs instead of the highbeams. Mine is set up this way and I don't have any dash lights coming on that shouldn't be.

Another thing I noticed tonight is that the dimmer control on the dash does not work? Not a big deal but it makes me wonder.....
I don't see how it would effect your dimmer? my dimmer works fine. or do you mean dimm the High beam light on your dash?..? you can't change that light level.

No I mean the dimmer control for the dash lights, don't ask me why I haven't a clue

Okay, I'm planning on doing this and need to come up with a components list, from what I understand I'll need the following for each wiring harness:
SPDT Relay (1)
Copper Wire (how many metres and what gauge?)
Ring Connector
Wire Taps (3)
Female Connectors (4)
Is that all that's needed?

All I have is a dual 87 relay and two 87a relays
I followed this for the hids

But keep in mind that the high beam light stays on while the DRLs are on. It goes out when the HIDs are on (still works for high beams)

Just did this mod today. Not sure where you found the relay for $8 with wiring, because I went to the CT at both 14th/Markham and McCowan/7 and they only had just the relay for $6, but it had two 87 legs instead of the 87a and the other one was the full wiring kit for $19, but didn't have the 87a leg either. The Source at 14th/Markham also did not have any. I finally went to Active Surplus and found one for $6.
Install was fairly easy. The female connectors really help so you don't have to solder directly onto the relay. I only used one relay on the driver side, and didn't bother with the passenger side.
Some observations:
- Blue high beam light stays on in dash as everyone said. I find it actually kind of useful on, so I know exactly when my high beams are on.
- My dimmer control works fine.
- Not quite sure, but it looks like the high beams aren't at a reduced power. They look awfully bright, especially when I'm behind another car and it lights up their entire trunk.
- If the high beams are on as DRL, and I pull back the stalk to turn on my high beams, my low beams come on. Is this normal?
That's about it.

My high beams get brighter when I pull back the stock and my low beams do not come on.. are you using a relay for your HID kit or do you have one installed?

Yes, I'm using a relay for my HIDs for my low beams. I'll look into the wiring again later. Its way too cold :/

All of those place suck in comparison to Sayal for electronics parts. That's where I got mine.

Normal - They appear brighter, but are really not as bright. On mine, it's more noticable that they are dimmer since I'm using the fogs.

You have to do the flash-to-pass mod to correct this.

That place sounds familiar. Is that across the road from Active Surplus in that big industrial looking building?

Gotcha. I rather have no DRL than blinding DRLs. I just had a look at them from afar today, and its not that bad at all.
Oh...well good thing I never use have to use the high beams during the day. Thanks!

No, they don't have a location downtown that I know of. Check out their website:

Yea...that's the one. Sorry, I was referring to the ActiveSurplus on Vic Park.
