Interesting. It doesn't mention the actual DVD.

I'm tempted to bid on this just to have the integrated controls in the console. That's about the only thing that might make this a better solution than the Garmin unit. Well... that and it would save me a few hundred bucks... :)

Unless you can buy the dvd seperately..

I'm sure McGuyver could hook one of these up in not time

Actually, I don't think the price is too bad considering replica screen from Devin is $830CDN which does not include GPS "brain" (you still have to fork out about $500 for a GPS unit). Ofcourse Devin's screen has A/V inputs which this unite probably does not have but still I think it's a good price.

You can buy the DVD's but if I'm not mistaken, they can cost upwards of $100 on their own.

It's too bad. I'd really like the built-in controls.

Navtech Navteq Mazda Saab BMW Mercedes Nav DVD 2005 SDL SDAL

May 17th 2005 NavTech DVD Image of Western Europe for Mazda, SAAB, BMW, Mercedes and potentially other cars which accept SDAL or SDL file format.

This image can be written to a Dual Layer DVD. I used a DataWrite Titanium DVD+R DL disk and made 3 working copies.
I used Nero 6.6.0.13 although I'm confident that the version is not important. I also know of people having success with DVDDectypter.

There are two important factors in writing this image to a disk.

1) Write the DVD with a modified BookType. The ability to fo this seems to be specific to some DVD Writers. Some Nu Tech, Plextor, RICOH, BenQ, LG, LiteON and NEC devices are known the have the ability to change the book-type of teh disk being written. My Device is a Samsung TSSTCorp TS-H552U with US07 Firmware. The bookType needs to be DVD-ROM.

2) Write the disk in Disk-At-Once (DAO) mode. Other methods were unreadablein my car.

The original disk came from a 2006 SAAB 93. The Volume Label on the original disk was 050517_1200 which I assume is a date-stamp and build number. My old disk was 040122_0710 and it came with my Mazda in 2004.

This DVD Image has been tested and works reliably in a Mazda6 and should also work in Mercedes and BMW DVD based systems that use the SDAL Map format.

I've read on M3F awhile ago from a guy who had this retrofitted into his 3 without NAVI, that it was a PITA to do. Its not as simple as splicing wires and your entire dash would have to be taken apart. Maybe its easier to install now, I don't know. But this is not a plug and play system the last time I read about it.
