Hi guys, I am thinking to buy a nice decent impact wrench/air gun for a close friend who's an mechanic as a b-day gift. I want to buy him a nice dencent one which is light weight yet powerful, price is not a big concern.

Is there any good source in local that I can buy from except Can Tire?

What sort of brands out there are considered the best?

I am a total n00b on this. Please offer some good inputs. Thanks.

Ingersoll Rand from Canadian Tire is good. A mechanic needs a good one that will last a long time, so the $229 one would be a good choice.

pretty much, the tops brands are:
Ingersoll Rand, Snap on, and Mac Tools.
i'd go for an Ingersoll Rand myself. plus they sound nice too!

Does your friend have a Air Compressor at home? No point of getting him that if he doesn't, since I don't think he'd bring his own tools to work.

Thanks guys for all ur input!!

Pearly, I think i'd heard about Snap-ons, they're quite reliable. so how much am I lookig for a decent snap-on gun versus the top ingersoll one in CT?

At ths shop i work at (Toromont Cat) we have truck and heavy equipment division's....I would say 65% of the techs in the shop have Ingersoll Rand guns. mainly the 2135TI which is a 1/2" drive ....Our shops owns the 2141 which is the 3/4" drive. Some of the techs also own the air rachet and most of us have a 3/8" drive gun as well. I would say the other 35% would be split between mac(which Ingersoll rand makes for them) and snap on(blue point). The reason were mainly based to the 3 brands is we need tools that will last us a long time and can handle the higher torques becasue we deal with such big things. large excavators, large dozers, large wheel loaders etc....and bolt torques can reach 1000+ft lbs in no time. If you friend is in something like the auto industry he would be more than fine with the IR2135TI...I own it myself and love it. great gun very reliable!
Something you might want to try. look at ebay for air guns on sale. Normal price for my IR gun alone at sears would be approx $400 CAD I went on ebay and got the same gun, plus a set of 5 impact sockets, plus a pair of mechanics gloves and a carrying case for a winning bid of $189 us...add in currency exchange and shipping and duties i paid about $260ish cad all said and done. Good luck with your purchase!

oh, i forgot to mention, most impact sockets we use at Canadian Tire are i believe 1/2 drive. i forget. i know 3/8 is the size of most ratchets and such.

but make sure u get the right sized impact gun.
it would suck if u spent ~$500 on a 3/8" drive gun, and all his sockets where 1/2" drive...

Thanks guys for all ur opinions! I just went and checked out this one in CT, it's Ingersoll Rand 2100G. apparently it's the most high end one I can find in CT, pretty lightweight (4 1/4 lbs) to me, and I guess it's powerful too compares to others on the same shelf (550 lb/ft). Price is $229.99. What do u guys think?

you could always ask one of the mechanics at the store before you buy it.
they'd probably know the most about 'em
