I know the unlocked iPhone users that still use iTunes. You are prompted when you hook up your USB to the phone and computer if you want to update. Click NO and no trouble with phone bricking.

PLUS, you still have all the luxuries of iTunes.

So, I'm thinking of getting the iphone for my wife for Christmas.
I don't know anything at all about phones.

We're on the Rogers network right now.
If i buy one from the states, what do I have to do to it to be able to use it here?

Are there features that they have in the states that they get on the iphone but aren't supported here yet?

like internet access or anything?
what about the gps feature?

Thanks,
Ray

You can get internet browsing on Rogers, but it's crazy expensive compared to the states. Basically not worth it.

The iPhone doesn't have GPS

No it doesn't. But it has wireless built in, so you can get access to google maps and internet for free wherever there is a hot spot.

But this still isn't GPS...you see the map, but it won't tell you exactly where you are!

If the iPhone had GPS, it would be the perfect phone :)

But if the iPhone doesn't have a GPS antenna, how can the phone know where you are to place you on the map?

I'm guess they aren't using triangulation

Here you go.

Check for latest updates regularly.

First virginize the phone.

Set Settings → General → Auto Lock → Never

Start Installer and update it if it asks. Tap on Sources, Edit, and Add http://i.unlock.no/

Make sure you have BSD Subsystem installed, if not, go to System category and install it.

Now, install The Virginizer found in the Unlocking Tools category. This will take about 3-5 minutes to complete.

Once this is completed follow the steps found here
http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step1_windows.html

I confirmed this works with any baseband and 1.0.2 and 1.1.1

Only issue with 111 is the restrictions with ringtones, ibrickr hasn't been updated to upload ringtones for this firmware so goto http://www.efksoft.com/products/iphoneringtonemaker/index.htm to upload ringtones.

Don't bother going to 1.1.2.

If you screw up, just start over and virginize and redo the steps. Don't panic, it's impossible to brick the phone.

Also, KEEP YOUR SIM UNLOCKED/pass free otherwise you'll waste your time and have to redo the steps.

Good luck, it shouldn't take any longer than 45minutes

Be sure of the version you are buying. as far as i know, 1.1.2 can't be unlocked yet as they just came out with it.

I think on HOFO, you have to downgrade to 1.1.1, do some hacks then upgrade to 1.1.2
