Tried to install a cheap no name intake last night by myself. Didn't get anywhere with it and lost a screw holding down the MAF sensor. Very paranoid right now as every sound made me jump when I drove. Serious case of buyer's remorse here... Called Sherman at Speedtech today, he said bring it in and they'll have a look at it.
Worst part is, NOW I start reading stuff on hydrolock and CEL coming on etc.

don't worry about it , you would have to drive through 2 feet of water for that to happen.

So I hear. And although I'm sure it's unlikely to happen, knock on wood. I'm buying a pre filter just in case.

The no name was only the intake, I bought a AEM filter. If this doesn't work out, I'm just going to sell the filter on here. The pipe, iuno... It's the exact shape made to fit the 2.0L engines, but not sure if anyone would want it. I'll see how today goes and what the mechanic says.

Another tip other then the pre-filter
is where the filter sits, you will see that there are slots in which will allow not only air but water as well...
so your best bet is to get some duct tape and cover those as well...
to at least easy your paranoia, try driving my Mazda3, dumped to the point where the bumper is at the floor and also running a CAI...I have the pre-filter and the duct tape going on...
things are well and no CEL's....my tip is that just drive with a little more care..and observe the road especially when its rainning or wet out.

im in the same boat! lowered on sportlines, and i just have a base model sedan, so i cut out my plastic cover where the foglights can go for colder air to enter the cai.
things are well and no CEL's....my tip is that just drive with a little more care..and observe the road especially when its rainning or wet out.

avoid deeper puddles, and if your reall concerned, dont drive when its pissing rain out.

Those slots in the fender liner are for extracting air, not letting air in. The air enters from the side of the front grille and exits the back along with heat from the engine. It's partially an engine-cooling feature and partially a nice way to allow air to rush faster through the fender. Don't worry about water getting in and doing anything to the filter.

WTF?????? Have ever seen how the engine bay looks like, all the heat is actually comming from center section of the vehicle...which is where the header is located
and covering 3 little vent holes is not going to make the engine cook and end up being more hotter then usual....
And when you look at the air dynamics of the Mazda3, Air air charges or rushes through the front grill and as well grabs air from the bottom of the bumper
either OEM or aftermarket grill still a huge chunkof air does get into the motor, and if you have ever seen behind the front bumper and look at the bottom, ITS A GIANT HOLE!!!
do you see how this car aint going to cook up or fry with cover those three vent holes???
makes no sense...if anything the same three whole vent should be on the passenger side...
all I see those 3 vent holes function is to allow our dork horn to be heard when locking the car or when we press the button on the steering wheel..
unless your telling me seeing how I covered that hole, that my horn will overheat and as an alternative I should be giving the middle finger more often to get my point across to stupid drivers...
honestly, just duct tape dat 3 hole vent shiznat which shall calm your paranoia..
I appoligize but your logic does not make any sense and do not want to miss lead those who are trying to learn or actually trying to get some security when it comes to running a CAI name brand or generic : )

Like I said in your other thread about this... if you paid $50 more for a REAL intake like Injen...
1) You wouldnt be crapping your pants every time your car makes a noise all day today.
2) It would fit perfectly
3) It has an extremely high chance of working better than the no name one your fabricating together yourself
4) Is saving $50 really worth all the stuff your going through?....
A little late now I guess... hope it works out for ya.

Who said anything about overheating anything? You're reading waaay too much into my post. The car has a radiator to keep it cool. The vent holes are there for a reason. They are not there for the horn. Covering them up doesn't protect anything as the filter will be fine without them covered up. You will slow down air flow. And the air in there won't be as cool. And the holes certainly are not there to let in air like your other post said - they are air extractors.

well think about this....I would rather cover up the one in the fender cause I am sure that I have a bigger extracter and that is called the bottom of the bumper....

like I said the biggest extractor on this SOB Mazda3 is the bottom of the bumper...
you cannot cover up the bottom but at least with some piece of mind, cover up those 3 vent holes, its not going to hurt anyone...
obviously something tells me you never popped open the hood when it rains or after your wash your car, go under there and look at where those vent holes, water does get in there....or better yet look down, the damn the bottom of the bay including where those vents is wet!!! at cover something is better then nothing reduces any idea of hydrolock...
curious what intake do you own?

F2 CAI w/ something custom (but know to be largest intake avaliable at 3 inch diamter pipe)

I agree with you if I simply bought an intake alone. But with pro kits coming, sharkfin, eye lids and everything... the costs mount up pretty high. I read into everything and the input you guys gave, but considering Skarbro's method and the whole function of a CAI; I decided a generic pipe wouldn't have made the difference. I'll find out soon enough.

Paranoia? I'm not paranoid at all. You are the one talking about covering up the vent holes with duct tape. I've been under the hood plenty of times and opened up the fender well plenty of times. Water won't get in through the vent holes enough to do anything to the filter - unless you drive backwards through puddles all the time. Engine heat heats up the fender well - which the vents draw out. Hence, why it is a valid point - much more than mentioning the horn like you did.

Do you have a place on this pipe to place your O2 sebcor like any other intake?

Yep. It has the MAF sensor mount too, everything that should be on an intake is there.
