My question is what has the dealer done when servicing your Automatic Transmission?
Did they just drain oil via the drain plug, or did they remove pan and possibly change the filter/strainer?
What costs would one expect for this service?

There are two types of automatic tranny services you usually see at the dealerships. The first would be the drain-and-fill which is pretty straight forward. Then the actual flush where a machine is hooked up and a cleaner and additive are put through the internal gears.

How much would each of those services cost?

Each dealership is different for prices for this service.

Would you happen to know what the atf filter might cost for the 05 Mazda 3.
And is there a tranny pan gasket available or is just a hi-temp silicone glue used instead of gasket.
Thanks

IIRC when i bought my filter it was ~$15. there is no pan gasket, its just liquid gasket/ hi temp silicone.
just make sure you get the right fluid, mercon-V. i was only able to fins valvoline m-V at part source. it was about 3x the price of standard atf; this will be your big cost, esp if you plan on doing a drain and fill trice to flush some of the old out. the fluid cost me ~$40 to do 2 drain and fills, still alot cheaper than having a dealer flush.

I had done a drain myself via the pan drain plug and added the 3 litres or so it took to fill back up.
It is sorta like washing your feet with your socks on.
I have read on this forum other members that had there atf serviced and i was just wondering what the dealers were doing.....were they just draining through the drain plug, or has any of them lowered pan and changed the filter/strainer.
Yes that Mercon V is a burn....mazda dealer here charged me 6.95 a litre.
But i do see the local crappy tire also carries it, not sure of the price from there.

the time i asked the dealer what their $220 charge for tranny service entailed, i was told that they hook it up to a machine which back flushes the system to get all the old fluid out.
the price tag and the fact they don't replace the filter was enough to convince me to do my own.
