View Full Version : Hid
I went through the members ride pictures and most of the pictures that showed the cars HID's didnt tell me what kind they were (5000k, 6000k, 8000k), could you guys post up some pictures of your cars with HID's. Im debating on getting 6000k or 8000k. I have a red (metalic) mazda 3. I really like the blueish headlight look, i dont want it pure white i want them with some blue to it. Would 8000k look kinda dumb on a red car? and if it matters im ordering a Apexcone Kit

I prefer 5000K myself, or 4300K if you can find them..
Hood, you've got to try searching this stuff harder. There are tons of pictures here as well as on the net about HIDs.
One tip though, 8000K are a little more succeptable to tickets because they are more for looks. 6000K and 5000K are about the same color as Bimmers and Benzs. 4100K is the brightest, whitest and the safest.
Here are two threads that are right at the top of the Lighting section that you might find useful.

Ok with all that outta the way, I personally recommend 6000K. Looks good with a little bit of blue and still quite bright.
sry my computer is super stupid and sometimes doesnt let me search or when i hit the search button it takes like 5-10 mins to load, so i end up going through about 10 pages of threads
if i go with a 6000k, would i be able to change the bulbs to a 8000k without changing the whole kit?
It ok man, I hear ya, I'm on dial up half the time. I hate it. Those threads above should answer your questions. I'd venture to say 3/4 of members' HIDs on tm3 are 6000K.
EDIT: Most of the time you can just change the bulb.

yes you can change just the bulbs.
but if you want to change from a 35w kit to a 50 or 55w kit, you have to change the whole kit.
and fyi, the 50w kit is 30% brighter than the 35w kit.

I'm changing from 6000k to 4300k. Color mod your projector/lens and that should add some color.
3GFX provided the best link regarding HID's.
As that site states, OEM companies do not offer a colour temp higher than 6000K (which is really 5800k).
I recently picked up a Prolumen kit 4300k. For the price I paid, I got a very good HID upgrade compared to the stock Halogens I got with the 3.
But it fails by comparison to the Phillips kit I have in my 7. The Phillips kit is a bit whiter than the Prolumen kit.
Also because of the FD's reflector housing the light gets distributed alot better than the crappy projectors I have on the 3.
The site goes onto explain how the projector housing is necessary to achieve the infamous "cutoff" line. But after upgrading the FD to HID's, they should have stuck with reflector style housings. I can see alot further with the reflector style housings than the 3's projector housings.
You get what you pay for.
4300K for the win! :)

What bulb are you using in your reflectors.
It's a complete Phillips kit. Phillips ballasts and bulbs. 4300K. Just like the website mentions.
Back when I got it, it was going for $450US. Our dollar was bad then so it worked out to almost $515Cdn, once you covered shipping and what not.
I'm not keeping the 3 so I wasn't going to spend that type of cash on lighting. For $250 you get a pretty decent kit. Still produces better lighting than the stock Halogens. Plus I can always move it over to my bro's or sis-in-law's 3's after I return my 3.
If I were going to keep the car I would have spent the additional cash to get a true Phillips kit.
As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. ;)

like the others say, get 4300k
6000k is still pretty blue, it'll attract cops
Best solution get a retrofit or get OEM hid projectors
gets you color and a pure white light at the same time :)

x2 But if you must, try not to go higher than 5000k.

Just out of curiousity, are the OEM HIDs 4300K?

Good for you, a lot of people don't even bother, glad that you did.

6000k
You can't post a pic directly from your computer, you have to use an image hosting site I believe.
Mine are 6000k.
