I am looking to upgrade my video card for my pc so I will be able to play video games smoothly on a hi-def monitor or TV. $300 is my cap and I would like something that is DX10 and rivals xbox 360 in graphics. I am running a Pentium D 3.0Ghz with 2MB of RAM and Windows Vista. Any suggestions?

Definitely go for the 8800GT. An amazing video card for ~$260 if you can find it in stock somewhere...they've been selling like crazy.

The 8800GT 512MB is probably the best bang for the buck at the moment. It's as fast and in some cases faster than the 800GTS 640MB because it uses newer technology/build methods.

Depending on what kind of games you'll be playing, the GT should suffice up to 1680x1050 resolution with 4x Antiliasing and 8x Ansioscoping.

Anything over that resolution and you would have to throw down a lot more money for at least one 8800GTX 768MB, a new cpu and more ram.

I've played Crysis, UT3 and the HL2 series with all settings maxed out at 1680x1050 with no lagging, unless a section is loading. I run an E6750 dual core @ 2.6gz with 2GB ram, 8800GTS OC2 640MB, and Audigy Gamer on a P5N32-SLI Plus motherboard. I use a 20" Samsung 206BW LCD.

So nobody likes the new ATI HD series cards then?

ATI cards suck compared to nvidia cards. I have the 8800 GTS 640 MB video card and it's ok but it still lags on games like COD4 and Crytec . I would also go with the 8800 gt

Royroy, found a sweet deal. Even if its ATI, the 3870 does perform well with respect to its price.

It depends on your budget. I suggest you go check out a few review sites.
If there are specific games that you play, an ATI card, may perform better on those games.
www.tomshardware.com is one of them. If you google, you can find a few more.

If your budget is tight, take a look at 8600GTS OC (If you do go with this card, get the Gen 2 version.)

i have an ATI HD2900 xt..i'm pretty happy with it, but as others have said, your best bang for your buck is probably the 8800 GT.

the ati 2900 series has a noisy fan design; sounds like i have a jet plane on my apartment.

agree with everyone on the 8800GT.

I'm looking at building a new PC and that is the card I have picked out. You really don't need us on the board to tell you that its a great card, just look at all the reviews and such!

I was reading that there were a few 8800GT out there that were unlocked, and could clock up to the $500+ 8800GTX speeds.
