World's cheapest car unveiled in India
Thursday, 10 January 2008 16:59
India has unveiled the world's cheapest new car.

The 100,000 rupee (€1,700) car brings car ownership closer for millions of poorer consumers in emerging markets but has also raised major environmental concerns.

The 4-seater Tata Nano is about half the cost of the cheapest car on today's market, a 25-year old model from Maruti Suzuki Ltd.

AdvertisementThe car, with an engine around 625cc, will go on sale later this year, according to Tata Motors Ltd.

However, environmentalists are worried that millions of the cheap cars will flood on to India's roads, many of which are already heavily congested, sending emissions levels sky high in Asia's third-biggest economy.

The company says it planned the car years ago as a safer and more affordable alternative for the millions who often ferry families of four, plus baggage, on motorbikes and scooters.

Tata has said it will initially produce about 250,000 Nanos and expects eventual annual demand of 1m units.

Ford this week said it would build a small car in India within two years, and the alliance of Nissan Motor and Renault plans a $3,000 (€2,000) car with Bajaj Auto.

Tata has said it will focus on the home market for 2-3 years before considering exporting the Nano to countries in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia

Except you'd be dead after the first minor collision. :chuckle

It's a tin can on wheels, not meant for the way we drive around here. It's a replacement for a scooter, not for a 1st world style car.

Hey with the money saved both buying it and on gas you can put a cage in it and rubber bumpers all around.:chuckle

Its not much smaller than the VW Bug I drove for years and most definitely has better collision engineering...the bug had none! ...and I'm still around.

The Car is A Smart Idea For Developing Countries Ive traveled to India and in Most Areas Cars travel around 40km So the Cars logical, but the tire size cracks me Up lol

with the tiny size i'd think it would have similar safety features as the smart car... tata claims that the car exceeds today's safety regulation standards, so i'm pretty sure it would be a pretty safe car to drive in india considering it's inspiration came to be replacement of a scooter for family travels

this car isn't made for north america, its meant for the chaotic and non-patrolled indian driving society where no matter what car you get it'll have dents and scratches on it from hit and runs

I wonder if Tata would ever sell this type of car in this market, they would surly have to modify it, perhaps double the price, but even then it would sell, if one lives in the city it couldbe a replacement for the smart car here, who knows how the car market will look in 15 years with these Chinese and Indian Car Companies comming up fast.

I just can't believe it seats 5, I'm curious to know how it accelerates with a full load :P Isn't TATA the company who just bought Range Rover from Ford?? Who knows if this thing is successful I don't think it will be long before they hit north american shores, and are modified to meet our standards.. but at the same time it could be another Daewoo situation! But gas mileage on that thing must be pretty good with a .6 L engine

The Ontario gov't is already lobbying to have them made here if they want to sell them here.

You Can't Drive the Car here in Ontario it has a max speed of 88km it Cant even Go on the Highway. If This Car Was Sold in Ontario they Would have to modify its engine and i would love to See if this Car Could Pass the Safety Tests. Nano Car = 2nd and 3rd World Countries
