View Full Version : HID turns off every 2 minutes

WTF?
My 6000k Prolumens (ONLY PASSENGER SIDE) keeps turning off every two minutes. Everytime it goes off I flick the lights 'off and on' and they BOTH turn on and then 2 minutes later the passenger side turns off. If I keep repeating this it does it consistenly (I timed it on my cell phones stop watch)
Its been replaced before but last time the ballast crapped out. Obviously the ignitor works so is it losing charge after 2 minutes?
What do you guys think it is?:bang
you know what's weird, mine is doing the exact same thing on the passenger side, but not every 2 minutes. for me, my passenger side Prolumen bulb goes out, and it will only come back on when I turn off my headlights and then turn the headlights back on.

^^^ thats exactly what happens
When it goes off I would flick them off and turn them back on and it works again (for 2 minutes)

Same here (kinda).
Passenger side will try to turn on for a second (it ignites) but won't catch and go off immediately.
Started earlier this week.
I think the ballast is toast.

hmmmm why is it always the passenger side?
Could the cold weather be having an effect on this? Time to email Devin :(
haha we all got the same Prolumen 6000k. Mine was approx 2 years old as well. Devin covers these or would i need to buy Jdanielsg's ballasts on the M3F Buy/Sell board? LOL
Roys is the same thing 6000k lol

i am pretty positive that in this case it is the bulb.I had the same problem with my fogs, they would work when they feel like only on drivers side (doesnt really matter which side) |Pulled out the bulb and the connector had rust on the bulb side connector. there were traces of rust on the wiring. i replaced the bulb and voila problem solved

hmmmm so the bulb is an easy replacement?
Good thing they are lifetime warranty

Not saying that your wrong, could be the bulb itself, but I think it might be a different culprit in this case, ...They are saying that the lights come on fine but are shutting off at a precise interval of 2 minutes, this would unlikely be a bulb problem....It sounds more likely a ballast charge/hold problem.

You have to be F'ing kidding me. Prolumen 6k kit. 3 days ago THE EXACT same thing. I've already PM'ed Devin via M3F without response as of yet.
I double checked connections, swapped ballasts and it follows the bulb. The bulb is forsure the problem, I took it out and it's clouded over at the tip and when it fires up there is a colour shift just before it goes back out.
I wonder if this has popped up on you guys because of the cold weather.

Your saying the 'exact same problem' as whom? Is only one bulb going out in intervals? ......
Its possible as GFX says, it could be the cold. Its known that the cold can effect the relays in HIDs.

Passenger headlight goes off after a few minutes?
This is very strange that 6 people so far are experiencing the same issue in the same week
It should warm up this weekend so I will be keeping an eye on them to see if its temporary
My friends 6 month old TL had his passenger headlight go out a couple of days ago and on the way home last night I seen another TL with one headlight off
Maybe IT IS the cold?

im with Flagrum on this one.. sounds like a ballast issue... if it was the bulb... it wouldn't stay on that long.. but maybe the connections are rusted especially with all the salt we've seen this year...

Check the connections, my passenger ballast doesn't ignite sometimes, but I believe it's the connector that's causing it.

Passenger headlight goes off after a few minutes?
Mine is the drivers side, and yes. It will fire, turn on, and remain on for 2-4 minutes. I pulled out the bulb itself and it has clouded over at the tip, inside the glass.
Just put in some halogen bulbs cause the output on one HID ain't cutting it for me.

MK I'm having the exact same problem since couple months ago and now I lost all hope.

I wouldn't say that, I been through two sets of bulbs now and it has to be the ballast, I dealt with Devin for the warranty and it took for ever, he mentioned once that the problem could be the ballast but I tried the bulb in the driver side and it worked, then it went and I got a new one and that one went too a few weeks ago. Lost cause!

Ok. I think we have enough to hold a fair size meet with Devin.
Just let me know when the "Prolumen warranty" meet is. I'll be sure to attend that one.

LOL they are either wired in correctly or the kit sucks! The hids should last the lifetime of the car. Best thing I would reccomend is trying a different kit..

Yup, I sent out my light today to be dealt with. Quite frankly, he's been replying very quickly to my emails and the process thus far.

So these HIDs that are problematic, are the Prolumens? Are these the thin digital ones? Any other brands?

The last few times I've noticed one of my bulbs out I would see a whole bunch of other cars on the same day with one headlight out as well, whether it be HID or not.
Maybe it's a temperature thing...or some kinda secret government conspiracy to make it so the cops can pull us all over one night to meet their quota.

I finally managed to swap out some parts and found that my problem is with the.....
bulb/capsule. So McGuyver was right (for my case anyway).
I just hope my replacement has the same colour output as my existing.

the colour will be slightly off on the new bulb because the other bulb that you have is already worked in for so many hours. The new bulb you get will have a slight colour difference but it is not unusual

hey,
i've the same issue starting tonight.
so is it a ballast issue or a bulb issue?
(every few minutes the right passenger light goes out)
thanks in advance

I just confirmed that mine is bulb as well.
There is cloud near the tip of the bulb.
I can't get a hold of Devin on e-mail.
Usually he responds hell fast, is he on vacation?

Not sure if he is on vacation, but TM3 has been trying to reach him in regards to his sponsorship.

Last I heard from him, he was in the middle of moving, so he may have put The Xenon Store on the backburner for the meanwhile would be my assumption as moving is always a hard thing. But I'm sure he'll address it when he back up and running, he's been great with my warranty claims in the past. Hope things get resolved.

Its weird how everyone is having problems with HIDs.. Definately not the weather.. could be the ballast or the bulb itself or a default start... The only time when HIDs will ever have hard time starting is when temperatures are extremely cold. Trying to remember which kit I have... Its been a year now and never ever had any problems, and they are ran as drls too.

i had no problems until now, the kit is 2 years old (installed it april of 2006).
I drive in every weather condition except for freeze rain. Otherwise, any crazy snow storm, or extreme cold,
the prolumens never gave me trouble
btw SFW, i e-mailed devin again, to give him more information on my kit (he probably doesnt remember). I gave him a FYI that you guys are looking for him.

you run your HIDs as drls and they run fine? do they work on low power as well?...I'd be interested to know which kit you have.....

yep runs great, not a single problem and you need to run them as full power always, i just bypassed drls..
Here is a pic, I actually want to sell it, since my new car already comes with hids, but thats another topic...Its by HanDa electonics..
