View Full Version : How thick should the dupli-colour caliper paint be?

I bought the dupli-colour caliper paint kit from Canadian Tire and when I opened it today I noticed that the paint is very watery. I'm used to seeing regular household paint which has the consistency of yogurt.

For other who bought this paint, was yours also watery? I'm curious whether mine is expired or tampered with.

Did you shake it?

Did you shake it?

Nope, but I stirred it. :) I kept stirring for a few minutes expecting it to thicken.

If I remember right, it is thinner to be expected. But that helps with the smooth finish it gives.

I woudn't be trying to put this on in this weather. Unless you are have your calipers off and are doing it inside.

It's meant to be thinner so that you spray in multiple coats every 20 minutes. You end up building up the thickness on your calipers. Works very well.

Ah okay. Good to know.

Isn't it meant to be brushed on?

I'm an idiot. I assumed he posted about the spray.

It's kinda hard to say on a forum how thick or thin the paint should be.
I do recall however that you have to do several coats to get even coverage.
IIRC, when you first brush it on you can still see metal (so I guess it is suppose to be thin).

One thing's for sure. You're gonna be fed up with it by the time you're done.

Thanks guys, I guess the thickness was fine.

I already finished and it was a pain for sure, literally. I still have a sore back.

Silver and I did it in a heater garage so I was within the minimum temperature of 12degrees.

I apologize for going off topic, figured your question was answered but figured I'd ask you these questions now. I'm going to be doing my calipers in the spring, did you do all 4 at once? Using jack stands all the way around? Or front two then back two?

I did each front separately and then did the two backs together. It would be easier to jack up the entire car, but I didn't want to drive my car up three pieces of wood just to paint the calipers.

Much appreciated, I think I'll do front/rear pair at a time. Total time spent? 4-6 hours?

Ya, I spent about 5 hours.

Perfect, thanks for all the answers WeatherB. If I have any more questions come closer to the time I do the calipers, I'll PM you.

Alright sure. I really hope the paint lasts for at least a year.

i want to do mine also (when its warmer) but don't have space to do it....is anyone planning on doing theirs in the spring and have space? i have a jacket and two stands....maybe we can work together to get it done faster? we both work on one car, then the other?

Where are you located? I'm in Waterloo - and my double garage is insulated (+ heated when needed). I was planning on doing it this weekend or next.

And.. I just ordered stickers last week from Xenonmods. I should have asked on here if anyone wants to split an order to save on shipping.. oh well.

This thread just reminded me that I seriously need to re-paint my calipers.

i heard the duplicolor stuff doesnt hold up against chips very well.

i personally used black BBQ paint. i just sprayed it into a small cup and burshed it on. it is a little more watery then duplicolor but it is holding up great.

I did it different. I did left side first then right side. So I only had to slide on my roll bench left or right 3 feet in between coats. Then dropped it and jacked up the other side & repeat.

When finished all 4 doing many coats I still had more than 1/2 a can of paint left.
