That guy is nuts. Anything is possible with time and money, and seems like he is doing it right. I would be happy with just a MS3 tranny :p

WOW, that guy has balls - and $$ - undertaking a project like that. if you ever check out his ride, let us know.
just an observation: notice how different member edicate is on the american forums?
we all drive the same cars, gimme a break!
WOW...read the whole thread, this guy is my hero.
Two things...he says the MZR engine can be easily bolted into the sedan. Yes we knew that. I'm wondering, if it would take a lot of work with the harness to get it to work.
Second thing....he keeps mentioning another AWD mazda. Is there an AWD somewhere else in the world?

Pretty ambitious task on his part. I actually hope he gets it done.

x2. i got the impression there are OEM AWD parts to be had in Japan.
that mean there's a stock AWD 3, ie, the Loch Ness monster?????

Joe - can you make a MS3 tranny fall off a truck somewhere? I would REALLY like that lol. Just need to have someone do it first so we know if it will bolt right on.

Yes, there's a stock AWD 3 sedan and hatch. However, both are only available with a 2.0L engine and a 4-speed slushbox.
hey guys, this if my first post on tm3
i'm the crazy dude in oakville doing the swap, the car is currently at 400 and finch area getting the subframes fabbed, don't know when it'll be done, could be 2 days from now could be 2 weeks.. but when i'm done ill try and jump in on one of your meets :)

Welcome to the board. Please keep us in the loop about what happens to the car. Although many of us have our doubts I would love nothing more than than to eat "crow" in front of you at a meet with this AWD beast of yours.
Best of luck and serious props to you.
thanks, i'll definitely keep this thread posted with updates.. when the subframes are fabbed ill take some photos and put them up

Are you worries about the drop in gas mileage with the AWD? :)
I kid, I kid!
contrary to what i've posted on mazda3forums, the weight specs should be:
2780 (07 mazda3 2.0 touring)
+125 (difference in weight for the .3 increase of displacement)
+510 (weight difference of 2.3 06 mazda6 and 06 mazdaspeed6)
-55 (drycell battery and billet tray)
-20 (approximate weight savings from 1 piece aluminum driveshaft vs. 3 piece steel)
-100 (approximate weight savings of chromoly tubing vs. mild steel subframes)
-100 (approximate weight savings of shortening axles, shortening exhaust, losing a cat, lighter gas tank, CAI)
final weight: approximately 3140 lbs. (without changing the seats)
the speed6 weighs 3600lbs and still gets 20/26mpg. so if i cut 560 lbs off that i think i'll be ok. i'm hoping it wont be too much of an issue haha... the thing also has to run on ultra 94, or some homemade fuel/toulene mixture to keep it at 93 octane :whoa
i know you were just joking, but i just figured out the projected weight a while ago and was happy about waht i came up with :-)

if you already have a 3, then its not as expensive (i'm the first one to do this so it was much more expensive for me having tried things and failed)
speed6 engine - 1500 (i saw one on mazda6forums)
speed6 tranny - 800 on carpart.com
speed6 ecu - 400 on carpart.com
speed6/rx8 diff - haven't found one by itself so i dont know
custom or volvo s40 subframe - volvo said 700 for the rear brand new... and i still don't know if it would work
labour to respline your axles to make them shorter - ??
labour to swap the engine - ??
labour to either shorten or buy a shortened driveshaft - ??
i saw a wrecked speed6 for sale in quebec for 6900 too :hawt with like less than 10,000kms, so if you had that you'd just have to figure out the custom work and labour
the cost for me includes a full salvaged speed6, a salvaged 2007 mazda3i gt, the custom frames and labour.. so it might throw you off haha
whiteomega
03-12-2008, 04:44 PM
i think the difference is that if you bought your 3 new, you have to figure that into your expenses, so once you add in the 26k the car costs new, it really starts to approach mps3 territory..
for you, it was perfect because you managed to find a salvaged 3 for a lot less.
it's really tough for me to have a round figure
yes i bought the mazda3 new... i just got a really really good deal on it because of the flooded engine. i got into a bad accident and it got written off which really ****ed up my plans because i was going to use my original 3.
also, i bought the speed6 salvage to use as parts for my 3 project, but also to fix a normal salvaged 6 to sell -- or for the parts to sell seperately.
so as you can see, its really kind of hard to say how much i paid for the parts, because i have half a car left and i don't know how much it will pay out yet.
i did unfortunately burn 1-2gs on trying to find shortcuts or easier ways to fit the awd before i decided to go with custom subframes... so that's also a cost factor that could be avoided if it was done again
when i do figure out what's going to happen with it i will let you guys know the final costs of the labour and custom work alone..
also, thanks to unoriginalusername for referring me to this forum :)

Ahh, gotcha.
if you don't mind posting the costs, it would be interesting to know what the cost of a new rear subframe is. i was kind of tempted to do the RWD conversion myself..
i think the biggest problem with that is finding a transmission that would work... rx8 wouldnt i dont think, is the miata rwd?
whiteomega
03-12-2008, 06:17 PM
the miata is rwd..
so i take it hte speed6 tranny is too big to fit?
i'm guessing the speed3 tranny is set up all wrong for awd.

cool mod man!
what shop in Oakville is doing this work for you?
oakville import did the preliminary removal of all the parts
dragway racing systems (in toronto) is fabbing up my subframes
i think ill get rowetech to tune it after its all put together
the miata is rwd..

the speed6 tranny is HUGE! i think the miata will come in the 2.3 disi, so that would be the tranny you would wnat to make your speed rwd... i'll save the blueprints from my rear subframe just incase someone wants to do it in the future... sounds like a pretty cool idea though

I have a speed6, and you can actually get away with running 91 octane. I use 91 Octane on a regular basis with no problems. You will lose a bit of power, but honestly, I don't think you'd notice unless you dynoed it or took it to the track or dragstrip.

Wow, this is interesting ...
i heard that 93 is pretty much the only way to go or else it retards your timing or something. i think i'll fill up on 91 and have little premade homebrew bottles of octane boost in my trunk to make it 93 haha
Gizzmo_jr

Sunoco = 94
yeah, very overpriced... i should arrange a group buy on a barrel of toulene (octane rating of 114) haha

Yes, if you use lower than 93, it does retard your timing, resulting in the "loss of power" I mentioned in my earlier post. However, it's a very slight difference, and as my daily driver, I cannot tell the difference between a tank of 91 and a tank of 93.

Some speed6's were running inconsistently pre-flash, regardless of what kind of gas was used. The flash was supposed to address this, but some cars had no problems before or after the flash. The behaviour of this creation would probably depend a lot on the behaviour of the speed6 donor engine used.
The owner's manual for the speed6 actually says 91 octane gas is acceptable (93 recommended, 91 acceptable, 87 only in emergencies). The difference in power between 93 and 91 is minimal (I personally don't notice, and I think you'd only notice if you tracked/dynoed your car before and after).

Hey mkfc, I notice you're parting out the interior of the speed6 (amongst other things) on mazda3forums. Is there any way I can see if the shifter pannel/plate area on the 6 is the same as the 3? I'm trying to do a little project, but didn't want to mess up my piece/pay $60 for a new one.
sorry, forgot to update this forum
here is 1 of the 3 mounts that had to be fabricated to mount the MZR turbo into the mz3 -- as you can see, my guy made it almost look perfectly stock
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg127/mkfcheung/11042008825.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg127/mkfcheung/11042008821.jpg
so voila, the engine is in, and aligned to the rear with no clearance issues. steering rack did not have to be repositioned, hub from transfer case did not need to be extended. with 3 mounts and some drilling (no cutting) the engine fits in. other than the ABS pump being on the wrong side, there are no issues.
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg127/mkfcheung/11042008822.jpg
my fabricator hasnt exactly been on schedule, but his work is quality. unfortunately every time he gets working on my car it seems like 1 or 2 drag racing cars come in and take priority over mine :-(.
tired of waiting for this rear subframe to be fabbed--- i'm ditching the chrome-moly tube suspension.
i called volvo today and asked if i could test fit the rear subframe from a awd t5 s40 (i obviously didnt tell them it was for a mazda3 haha) and they said yes.
so i'm going to try it out this weekend, il take plenty of pictures too. unfortunately, volvo sells the subframe for 1700... but i did find one in Western Canada for 700 + shipping. if it fits, i'll order it and hopefully be done with the subframe issue.
Some good progress. Have you had any contact with JDM suppliers? I did look it up and there are 4WD Mazda3s sold in the JDM. Either way the Volvo drivetrain might be a better idea for the power you're putting out. Keep it up, we're all excited to see the result.
i entertained the thought.. but id have to wait 3 months for any part. yeah the volvo is going to be the heavier model, so hopefully it turns out ok... i still think i'll have to slightly modify it to fit the diff, but hopefully no mods to fit it to the unibody

i don't think its the same.. sorry :(
clutch slave cylinder just arrived in the mail.. going to see if i can get it installed this weekend to complete the auto to 6 speed conversion
just a random question... does anyone know if the volvo s40 and the mazda3 use the same struts/springs/shocks?
whiteomega
04-15-2008, 02:20 PM
i don't think they do. the s40 is a lot heavier than the 3, so the stock springs probably have a higher spring rate, and the shocks tuned to match. the mounting locations might be the same though.
Edit: i think the ride height is different on the s40 too, but not positive. the two cars use the same suspension setup (Macpherson front; multi-link rear) but i think the springs and shocks are different. tuners for the S40 (eg Evolve) have different lowering springs for the FWD and AWD versions of the s40 too (maybe because of the added weight, or maybe because something in the geometry changes for the AWD cars)
hmmm... im hoping theyll have the same mounting locations, if they do then i'm saved.
i just hope the shocks go up and down, instead of on an angle like the speed6.
whiteomega
04-15-2008, 03:46 PM
swing by a volvo dealership and ask if you can see the suspension geometry. the worst they can say is "no", which is where you are now.
i honestly can't see there being any difference in the actual geometry, though the parts themselves will be different. i'd be willing to bet the front would be exactly the same; it's the rear strut mounts i'd be worried about. though if it's the same between the 3 sedan and the 3 hatch, it's probably the same on the s40.
update
clutch slave cylinder for auto-manual swap :-)
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg127/mkfcheung/18042008859.jpg
only mount left that must be fabbed (mazda3 mounts are horizontal, the speed6 mount is vertical... doesn't fit)
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg127/mkfcheung/18042008856.jpg
rear hub from rear subframe. looks like its off centered, but the central tunnel is not completely centered, not the hub

so i went to volvo, the rear subframe is on backorder and is not available in north america until they get another big shipment from sweden lol.
but somehow, my fabricator has told everyone that he wont be in this weekend, but is actually going to be there working exclusively on my car! he may even be able to make the subframe *fingers crossed* -- but no promises

He's putting the MS6 engine and tranny in it too, so there's already a turbo on it.
volvo rear subframe, rotors, axles, shocks and diff (dont think i'll need it, but whatever) for the very reasonable price of 200 dollars from saskatchewan! :bana2 (in comparison to the 1100 quote i got from BC for JUST the subframe i think it was a steaaaal)
with greyhound shipping for 100 bucks it should be here by friday
after that, all i have is electrical to figure out and god willing it will be driving!
talked to 3GFX about his hookup on axles / gears, he pointed me towards a company that may be able to do splined shafts in Ti for reduced rotational mass :)

I THINK he said it should cost around $24,000 including the cost of both vehicles, materials, and all labour. Remember the 3 had a blown engine and the MS6 was totalled.
my 07 2.0l premium mazda3 w/ flooded motor @ 5200kms - 7500
trashed speed6 - 6600 (i swapped the seats, rad, airbags, steering wheel, cd changer and bose into a 6 and am selling it soon to recoup the cost... the difference in cost to buy and cost of resell would be about 1000-1500 bucks + i have the speed6 wheels, suspension still)
labour to get all parts out - 6000 (this is where i really could have avoided costs, i didnt know what i was doign at first and i really ran a bad bill at oakville import by trying to find shortcuts... if i had to do it again it would only cost 2 grand to strip both engines and subframes)
engine mounts and engine fitting - 1200
rear driveshaft - 200-300
rear subframe and assembly - 300 with shipping
custom gas tank -300
electrical - ????
so it comes down to this...
if you don't count the profit i get for reselling the mazda6, the bottom line of EVERYTHING i did (estimating the electrical would be 800 bucks) it would come to 23,000
if you don't count the fact i had to buy a mazda3 to put the engine n shit in
it would come to 15,500
at the end of the day the money that ended up leaving my pocket after selling the 6 is 19,000-20,000... and that is the cost I care about.
if i had to do it again without hte mistakes it would end up costing a considerable amount less (5000+ less)
so to answer your question, it's not costing me 40,000, but it is still a big chunk of change -- and i was lucky to get the donor car and the mazda3 at the price i got them
oh and i forgot to mention, i pulled a few strings and the car is going on the road as a CLEAN title :-)

this has quite a bit of potential if you can bring in JDM drivetrains and adapt the volvo parts and the spline into a conversion kit...
Are you still parting out the MS6? Or is it gone?

going to be here monday or tuesday depending if the freight company works on victoria day.
right now im praying that itll all fit. i figured the s40 can't be that much heavier in the rear... and if it is i'll get height adjustable coilovers

unfortunately i dont have any of that available, sorry.

So is the car done..? We need an update!
hahah well, it seems like i step into a gooey pile of shit every step i take. the parts got over the border, but the company that sent the parts to me told UPS that i would personally arange custom brokerage, so now they are held by customs. they say as long as they dont hold it and examine the parts it will be there either late tomorrow or on friday.
everything is hinging on this rear subframe. we are 90% sure that it will bolt up to the unibody without a problem, however we are unsure if the speed6 differential will fit as easily. it probably won't, but we will be able to customize it from there.
at this point the driveshaft guy, the electrical guy, the MTO guy, are all held up until its installed. at this point i don't wnat to promise any dates, but the first week of june seems very realistic to me

don't blame us for asking but you know we watch this project like a Cobb product launch... ;) :pop
Talked to my guys, and no luck. The materials are just to expensive as we've never done them before and our suppliers would have to special order. Sorry bro.
But keep me posted if you need anything machined still out of aluminium or hardened steel. I also can find you a good deal on heat treating and certain coatings.
cheers.

wow! what a read! I can't wait to see this beast!
I was always really intrigued with doing fabs, engine swaps and rwd conversions on civvy's and accord's that i used to be involved with. But i never thought of doing it with a "3" in my wildest dreams... let alone AWD!
I got sick of reading your thread on M3F because there seemed to be so many haters on there it's ridiculous. I can't honestly think of ONE person that doesn't want AWD.
Hope things are going well :)

UOU i misread it. there aren't edits so i couldn't really help but look like a dumbass
ahhhhh sorry guys, i went to china/korea with a group of people for a while. like i said on the m3f board, i've been experiencing some very frustrating waiting and am getting desperate/pissed with how long its taking to get STARTED on my car. i'll spare the details, but in a nutshell my fab guy moved shops right when i was in the front of the line, and just finished moving and setting up yesterday.
in the interim i bought a GReddy intercooling core, and the brake/clutch/gas pedals off of a wrecked 5 speed mazda3 as well as a shifter console and shift boot
if i dont have the car ready by the end of the month i aint getting to school very easily :-(

Time to find a new fab guy :) lol...
You can always bum a ride off me back to London. That really sucks tho man, I hope it works out for you.
Ouch. I'm sure it will all turn out in the end, and it will be worth it to have this one off car complete!
rear cross member is in! rear diff is mounted! rear suspension (tein basics off of akz) is adapted!
pictures next week :):)

Or it was just a hoax? Or maybe his keyboard broke and he hasn't replaced it in months... keyboards are expensive now $20 and up JK :)

BUMP!
Backto it again, working a collabo with QEW mazda. My old mechanic lost my wrecked speed 6 with all of the electronics in it right before he got a muscle disease and quit working on cars forever. Lucky us. Anyways, been looking for a salvage online since while ive been in china studying. Hope to post now that the ball may be rolling again :)

The dude sold it to QEW Mazda? I'm surprised a dealership would buy it in that condition. If I had the money to finish it I'd get it. Seems like all the difficult stuff is already done.
btw... I want!
