View Full Version : do people call your car 'mazda3'?

I've had my speed3 for about a week now and I've been getting a lot of 'hey cool mazda3 my mom is getting one too!' comments with the 'its just like a toyota corolla type grocery getter car' look from people who are not too into cars :whoa. I find this pretty funny little do they know I can blow the doors of most corollas if I want to.

Some people can tell the difference, when I parked the car a few times I saw young guys walking around it and checking it out. Does your ms3 get a lot of attention?

I`ve had people ask if it is the Mazda 3 with the sport package. I tell them that if a sport package adds a turbocharger and a 6 speed manual, then sure.

Young people will probably know what "model" of Mazda 3 it is. Don't be offended when they say it's a Mazda 3, because you should know you have a faster grocery getter than most people...:chuckle

When I went out for dinner with friends last week this is how my conversation went (this guy knows a bit about car)

him: you got a new car?
me: yeah gota mazdaspeed3
him: oh a mazda3 everyone has one of those
me: theres only 500 of them in canada each year
him: there are lots of mazda 3 on the road, my neigbhor has one, all my friends have them etc..
me: mazdaspeed 3...
him: whats the difference?
me: turbo, big brakes, different suspension, different front end, different interior, a bit more $xxx..
him: you got ripped off for a mazda3!
me: SPEED3...
him: oh ok so its a mazda3 like the ones my friends have.
me: if you know people with subaru wrx sti, please dont call their cars 'oh its just a impreza' you might get slapped. *gave up & continued eating*
:pop.

next time someone ask me what I drive, im just going to say a red wagon :chuckle

When I talk to friends, I don't call it mazdaspeed 3 anymore.
I just tell them, 'I drive a hatch'.

"holy, you changed the car, was it blue?"
"yup, i like the red one better."
"are they different, looks nice, sharp color."
"they are same, b/c the lock problem, dealer decided swap my car for a newer model without that problem."
"holy, what a service, i will get a mazda next time."

thats real conversation with my neighbour.

lol, our cars are the best sleepers! And extremely underrated! I love it!

I don't bother explaining the whole story I just tell them that it's faster than their car and they usually don't believe me and that's when I chuckle. (Usually makes them think again) Not being cocky or arrogant, just making people think twice and I usually get the "oh sh!t" not too long after that! :)

Like when i got the car my bud was like "Why did you get another 3?" and then we went for a drive and I got my "oh sh!t" :)

When I'm being modest or speaking to non-enthusiasts, I'll tell them I drive a Mazda 3 four door hatch. For those in the know, it's safe to refer to your car as the "Speed 3." Nothing wrong with calling it the Mazda 3 b/c that's essentially what it is.

I'll just explain that its the AMG or M series of Mazda. Most guys would understand that. If they don't know those..... then I would even bother.

Mazda doesn't really advertise the speed3 that much, so most people really don't know the difference. But it's cool, I like having a sleeper car :)

I subtly mentioned to a friend, who has a 3S that I loved it when my turbo kicked in...he promptly replied that he loved it when his did too...

I literally had to go thru the Mazda site, to show him the 2 cars and the hp difference for him to understand what I was talking about...

I tell everyone I drive a wagon...I work at a bank and I look young, so it lends credibility...lol...

For me it depends on who I talk to. My good friend is an enthusiast as well so talking about the MS3 is fine, but to most people i just say yah I drive a Mazda3 hatch, saying how practical it is. But most people don't know the difference, so my car doesn't stand out.

Part of the attraction of the MS3 is that it is an understated car, it doesn't draw attention and that these days is a good thing. Remember an STi is from an Impreza, an Evolution is from a Lancer and a SRt4 comes from a Neon. So I personally don't mind or care if people don't know what my car is really about.

This is pretty much what I say as well.

What is it? It's a Mazda 3 wagon. Most people don't care about the difference, so it's not worth mentioning. If they ask more questions, then I'll mention it's fun to drive because it's the turbo version.

i think at this point in time i just don't even bother or arguing. at first i'd get upset... but honestly.... there's no point trying to get ppl who had no idea what a mazdaspeed 3 in the first place.. to appreciate your ride even after you tell them.

if they know then they'll know and ppl that are true enthusiasts will appreciate it.

i even took off my mazdaspeed 3 emblem at the back
so i don't get ppl asking me "why did you stick a mazdaspeed emblem"
on your car... "what does that mean"?

that and i want it to be extra "sleeper"

Welp there are some who are aware of our cars.

Some kids in G35 and A4 (prolly their parents car) tried to cut me off, but once they saw Mazdaspeed emblem, they got in behind me instead and stayed back. :chuckle

I like that it's a sleeper and only the people who know... know.

when I talk with SRT-4 owners they get rattled when I call their cars neons lol. which is very similar to people calling our cars just plain old Mazda 3s... but in essence it is a 3 and I don't bother trying to correct people. I'll just say that mine is the sporty version.

I have yet to have a person come up to me and ask why I got a Mazdaspeed emblem on my car cause people just don't notice. The nice thing about the MS3 is they didn't over do the whole sporty compact look by adding a hood scoop or an obscenely large spoiler.

The reason no one know's about our cars is definitely because Mazda never took the time to advertise it, but it makes sense not to because its not what's gonna make them money. It does see lots of time in magazines so true enthusiasts will know about them, but that's about it.

Also... it's good that it's not too advertised... insurance companies don't seem to see too much of a difference either.
My rate only went up very moderately when I switched to the Speed3.
I can guarantee you I'd be paying alot more if I was driving a WRX.
Either way, the sound the turbo and the cat-back makes is usually enough to let people know you're not driving a grocery getter.

My MS3 gets a lot of attention from people that know wtf an MS3 is. Otherwise, same problem. To my friends that don't give a **** about cars, they see what they think is me driving EVERYWHERE, but nope, those are just regular white 3's..

I went to Mississauga Mazda dealership for my first oil change a few weekends ago, and it was as if no one there has seen an MS3 before. The service lady: "Oh wow, we never get these in here!" WTF!

These are the types of posts we dont need on here James. People commented on what they thought was an "exclusive meet". The admins made it clear that we do not have exclusive meets here, and thats all.... no need for the comments. </off-topic>

On the other hand, I actually hate it when people call my car a MS3. Soon as they see a turbo... "Ohhhhh, the Speed3, cool". All the time and effort, and people think it was bought that way... lol.

I'm thinking the same thing...tho I think the sleeper factor is rather thick already now as a cosmic blue mica...I wonder how many more stars (like in GTA, the game) it'd get with rims and 20% tint....

Garu Re: do people call your car 'mazda3'?

Some kids in G35 and A4 (prolly their parents car) tried to cut me off, but once they saw Mazdaspeed emblem, they got in behind me instead and stayed back.

When I was driving my G35 sedan, some kid in a white MS3 pulled up beside me at a light near U of T, and give me the up and down stare, then lazily asked if I wanted to go off the line...I gave him the up and down and knew what's up...gave him a smile and declined...

A year later and some later...I'm driving one...

ppl try to flex on the MS3 on the hwy...and when I walk them in 6th, they usually come back and give it another go...mostly Accords and Altimas :loco...just herd mentality...when I drive my brother's S-class, traffic literally part in front of me...

but the sleeper factor is great...so go ing badgeless might help with keeping it low profile...maybe even stop me from getting a PARKING ticket...lol...

I am really suprised by either the sleeperness of the speed3 or people in the previous category just don't even bother anymore?

I used to drive a matrix xrs and had a civic, svt, gti or whatever that wanted to race me on at least a bi-weekly basis if not more frequently. other then a little lobbying on the freeway i haven't had one tool bag reving at me at a stop light in this car in the year i've owned it which is nice

The warm weather is making its way here, so I have a bad feeling that I'll get the lame light to light racers wanting to go. It doesn't really matter what you drive as long as it looks nice and clean they'll assume you'll want to race to the next light haha.

Cruising main streets are so bad for that. (I don't cruise anymore). heck even trucks will wanna go with sub compacts.

I'm hoping to be able to G-tech my car some time in the upcoming month, then off to a dyno during summer and maybe the track.

But the way I look at is, the MS3 is not really a sleeper, its just that the people just don't know what our cars can do. (better this way). But to the few that do know usually wouldnt want to race anyways.

BTW does anyone nickname their rides?

Oh and the other day... I had to call Mazda Roadside to get my car pulled out of the ditch...(don't ask.. it wasn't a crash) what happened was the country roads where my parents live had just been plowed and the plow guy cut into the road so much that it was about a foot into the ditch.
I had just pulled out of my parent's driveway when some stuff in my car was moving around. So I immediately park my car on what I though was the side of the road and then adjust the items in my car. Then I realize my passenger wheels are now caved in the snow and into the ditch.

Anyhow.. the point of the story is I called Roadside assistance to get my car out safely and the girl who answers the phone is like: "ok so it's a Blue Mazda3" and I'm not "Yeah ...but a Mazdaspeed3" and she's like.. "yeah a Mazda3"... I brushed it off...LOL

Then the freaking tow-guy is like "So it's a Mazda3" and I'm like.. "No... it's a Mazdaspeed3.. the TURBO version" and he couldn't give a rats ass...

UGhhhhh

Gotta love the sleeper factor - getting the MS3 was actually my WIFE's idea, since I was going to get a '92 Skyline GTR as a third "fun" car, she figured I should get something about as much fun but with a warranty and space for our two kids and dogs!
She usually explains the car as "it's a Mazda 3 on steroids with almost 300hp, any questions?" (CAI, etc) - that's usually enough to silence them.

Panda? Why do they call it that?

As for roasting punk ass kids, is it really worth it lol, cause we all know that the kid in his civic has no chance. heck even the kid that buys a 318 thinking its all that cause its a BMW. I felt sorry for some of the kids that tried racing me when I had my old corolla.

With an intake the MS3 is has such a load sound that if you drive by someone with their window down they usually look at the car in confusion, seeing and hearing hatchback make wierd sounds lol.
