View Full Version : RX8 rims for MS3 rims?

hey guys...I'm currently entertaining a trade of my mint MS3 rims for a set of mint (not dj_chinaman's) RX8 rims. Problem is they're far...like over 3 hrs away...which I don't mind, but before I pull the trigger, do you guys see any pros or cons?

Since the RX8's are 8" wide...I don't really want to use my 215/45/18...any opinions?

Thanks in advance!

I've heard 235/40R18's work well with the RX-8 rims. That's probably what I'd get. Not far off from stock wheel circumference, either.

^^ agreed. sorry for not adding that. yeah, as part of the trade, I'm thinking of offering the tires for $ since I'd like to get some Falken 615's 235/40/18's.

I'm asking 750 for the 215/45/18 for tires...what do you think?

my rims 18*8 at 48. 215/45 will just fit in 8" rim, and i am going for 235/40 next time. i try my buddys on already, no problem at all.
IMO, you wont get that much from stock tires, but stock tires are really good, use it.

thanks for that bit of info...so worst case, I'll use my oem tires...use them up ASAP...hehehe...I'm a little concerned about not having enugh meat (rubber) on the rims to protect them on the sides...what do you think?

stock tire has lip protection (little rubber lip stick out a little bit right above the lip), if you look closely, all Bridgestone has that.

no offence to anyone, but my worries is that it'd look like this:

The tires are actually much stiffer, and from what I've heard, better for handling with the sidewalls stretched like that.

i personally use 235/40/18, they look very very good....
but if i had the money, i would of gone w/ 225/45/18....but it's almost $50/tire more (back then)

here are some pics of the comparison

however, i've seen 215/45/18 mounted on RX8 wheels @ scarborough mazda
b4.. i think it was Yokohama ADVAN Sport, use on one of the MS6 for track.
but they look FLUSH to rim...so i'm guessin' it is really the mfg. production..

Those are great pics guys...thanks a bunch!

Any safety concerns with using a stretched tire? planning 5 - 6 track days this yr...that's why I wanted the lighter wider wheels...

Apparently, stock RX8 tires are 225/45/18...so our OEM tires are really on a WEE bit smaller...I guess Txs' results came from 40 profile tire really stretching...

What do you guys think of bronze (not gold) matt powdercoat? I'm really open to constructive opinions...

I've always been a fan of flat/matte black rims. I don't think any other colour looks better.

^^^ yup, it seems good deal if his rims are mint condition. anyway our life is short, if you like it then go for it. btw, why dont you find out a mid point, that will save you a bit trip?

^^I supposed that's his way of recouping the slight value difference between the MS3 and RX8 wheels...

yeah...I'm pretty much gonna trade my ms3 rims with tires and put up some $ for a slight upgrade for tires...gonna go with the rt-615 235/40/18 based mainly on reviews and treadwear...slight $ for the upgrade if I can haggle a better deal...only con might be more tugging at the wheels with the wider track...and slightly less traction in puddles...

hope these won't rub with the cobb springs! gonna call quy soon too! stay tuned!

rx8 rims are light, but 235 are heavier... i would say it will net out the same expect you'll have a lot more rubber on the ground

RX8 rims are one of the best looking rims out there methinks.
You can either wrap those around with 225 or 235 and lowered without any rubbing issue. (Unless you have 5 adults in your car)
I personally have 235/40/18 on mine, but when I buy next set, I will probably do 225. 235s are way too heavy!

Fobio

very good point...I did the math...

25lb stock wheels + 24 lb stock tires = 49lb

for

22lb rx8 wheels + 24.5lb for 225/40/18 rt-615 = 46.5lb, 10mm gain

or

22lb rx8 wheels + 25.5lb for 235/40/18 rt-615 = 47.5lb, 20mm gain, less than $100 upgrade + 1 day of my time

now I wish I have a contact patch calculator, but it's a give and take...wish I had the budget to get some...ahem...OZ's and go:

18.7lb OZ Superleggera Cast + 22lb for 235/40/18 Continental SportContact 3 = 40.7lb, 20mm gain, about $2800

what do you guys think? $2800 for saving another 28lb of unsprung rate...I would if I could...but I can't...

28lb on wheel is about 28hp gain dude, + cornering is much better.:chuckle

There are a bunch of spreadsheets out there that allow you to calculate the effect of different wheel sizes and weights. Here is the one I use:

http://the-welters.com/racing/rotational.xls

Which I found here:

Thanks for all your input guys...you guys are my zoom-zoom family!

Can someone clarify my results? Since Method 3 is "most accurate"...does that mean I'm losing or gaining about 1/2lb of tq?

Hey RX9...can we see your specs? =)

I'd like to update you guys on my RX8 wheel saga...got them powdercoated, had a huge debate the night before about going gunmetal like UU/James' MS6 wheels, but I needed something different since so many ppl already rock RX8's...anyway, worked it out with Quy, and booked an appt with Allen...after 3 days of wheel dealing, 1 day drive back and forth to Ottawa, 3 trips to Brampton (Quy's Coating) to inspect and p/u wheels (I live around Skydome) and a trip to Allen (Simply Tire), here are the results...I'll take more pics in the sun tmr after work, hopefully.

thanks rx9...how about we swap rims? hehe

I haven't had a chance to rip it in the 615's yet...the wider track does make more unruly over streetcar tracks...and the ride is noticably bumpier...can't wait til I put the Cobb's on next week...

I have a feeling, these tires are good for about 130+ on the upslope right hand sweeper going from DVP to Gardiner...

this board has been good to me...thanks to James for showing the pics of his gunmetal rims...after looking at them, I was confident that Quy would be able to help me gt the colour/effect I want...

Also, the price on the 615's at Allen's was unbeatable...can't wait to test them out on a track!
