We've been all but assured that the covers will be pulled off the next generation Mazda3 before the end of the year, possibly in Paris, with sales expected to begin in the Spring of 2009. So it was just a matter of time before we started seeing spy shots of the new Mazda3 undergoing testing. Our new friend Chris came upon two heavily-camoed prototypes in northern New Mexico and was kind enough to send them along for our inspection.

Chris points out that while it was difficult to snap photos of the mules at 80 mph, he was able to get several shots that tipped us off to their origin. The central-mounted binnacle on the dash has been a fixture of late-model Mazdas, and the CX-9 leading the parade pretty much confirmed our suspicions.

When the new Mazda3 is finally revealed later this year, expect a similar fascia as that found on the recently redesigned Mazda6, along with a few cues pulled from Mazda's recent run of "Nagare"-inspired concepts. Four- and five-door variants are planned, with engines spanning the range from 1.5- to 2.5-liters.

Notice the light coloured 'A' pillar and inside door handle with the black dash. The 2 gauges are protruding/overlapping from the dash.

If this comes out next spring then maybe the 2008.5 will continue selling until February (12 months of selling). That would explain the mid year model introduction.

It'll be interesting to see more pictures in the coming month

Looks good. I heard of there being a coupe version to compete with that market segment. That would be so sick if it makes production. Imagine the SPEED version to that. Yeaaaa! RSX watch out!

2.0L--->2.3L = +8hp... safe to say 2.3L----2.5L = +6-8hp ish.. :( Hope its not true but... we'll wait and see.

Why do they cover those cars with weird things?

Why do they cover those cars with weird things?

The cars are not suppose to be revealed to the world yet, hence why these pictures are called "spy shots"

The cars are still in testing, the visuals might not be finalized yet and therefore the companies do not want to reveal to the public what the new car will look like.

Those "things" hide the identity of the car.

On the topic of the thread though, hard to tell as... I don't even see the rear lamps showing. I'm looking forward to it though!

Looking at Mazda's history, I don't think they'll have a MazdaSpeed version until a couple years into that generation.

I noticed they changed the dash, looks like they're going w/ a two pane console like the Mazda6.

how do I get those guys job?

Its a lot of Work Physics, Engineering, Art, and not to mention lot of Math... Im Sure they have programs @ Uiniversities and Colleges in Ontario.... most of the design process is done on the computer..... i can bet you they went over the design many times as the mazda 3 is an influential car that sells in the millions

^^ i think he ment getting the job of spy shots? if not then my mistake.

it looks similar body shape, the side lines look a little more aggresive, as they are kinda pointing down. and i just bought a mazda :S atleast this wont come out for 2 more years.

What's great is that i'll be in the market exactly when the next speed3 will be coming out! I can't wait to see what they'll offer standard considering what was in the last model 3... HID, climate control, heated power seats, more hp, etc.

Whoops, didn't see this.

So far I'm not a fan....the side line in the door handle looks a little steep and I'm not a fan of the shape. Looks like it won't be as agressive as the current car.

I can almost guarantee that the next speed wont be a 3... it'll probably be another 8 years for that. It'll probably go back to the MX-5 or Rx-8 or something.

they've already said they are doing the mx5... 250hp down from 263 because of tmic spacing or something like that, comes out next year i believe

i dunno, i think the ms3 has sold a lot better then mazda thought it would, and more importantly has kept their largest volume franchise still going strong when its major competition has already refreshed (impreza, civic, corolla etc.) which impart is thanks to the extended media hype of the ms3

Cant wait!!!

looks good, i like the dual exhaust. I Hope they have direct fuel injection on the 2.5 engine to get it over 180 hp along with 180 torque would be icing on the cake.

yeah dual exhaust looks great, cant wait for the finished car. Maybe I should wait and get this car when it comes out

Looks a bit tall... Wish they had lowered the roof a bit (shape is a bit Ion-ish)... Dual exhaust is a wasted weight and added cost... We'll see what the final version of it looks like :)

MAZDA Kitten

hmmm one has two exhausts and the other one has 1 so i am assuming two engine choices again
From the spy shots of the new 6 I have seen its safe to say Mazda will do an amazing job with the new 3. They have really big shoes to fill after the 1st generation 3
