View Full Version : IBC theft immobilizer ULC-S338/98
Just saw a story on CBC news about car thefts due to old immobilizers that are easily disabled by thieves. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (http://www.ibc.ca/en/Insurance_Crime/Prevention_Investigation/Immobilizers/Immobilizers_List.asp), none of the Mazda3's have electronic immobilizers that meet the IBC standards (they call them ULC-S338/98). Here is a list (http://www.ibc.ca/en/Insurance_Crime/documents/immobilizers/TDS_APPROVED_E.pdf) of cars that do.
The page above goes on to state that "If your car does not have an electronic immobilizer, you can get one from an after-market supplier. IBC currently recognizes four after-market systems as meeting the National Standard of Canada ULC-S338/98:"
* PFK Autowatch 329 Ti Immobilizer
* PFK Autowatch 573 PPi Immobilizer
* MasterGard M6000 Immobilizer
* Powerlock-Canada Immobilizer
Anybody else here concerned? Anybody planning on getting theirs replaced? Interested in hearing others' thoughts.

I'm a bit concerned but then again immobalizers only prolong the process of stealing cars if thieves really want certain cars they find ways to get them.

I wonder whether those companies might have friends working at the IBC...

Thats the first thought, and the second thought is what are you gonna do anyways? If a thieve wants your car, they're gonna get it.

I found a lot of information on IBC.ca website regarding it. It seems like it's a law from Transport Canada that vehicles after 2008 must have immobilizer that complies with ULC-S338 standard. A lot of new cars DO not equip with it!? Can you believe it?
I found some information on facebook too

It seems like only Autowatch's product has override code... interesting

I don't think that list is really accurate... the B-series trucks and the tribute all use the Ford PATS imbobiliser system which is what the other non-badge engineered mazdas use.... all 3s uses PATS, all of the 6s, RX-8, etc

That's correct, not only is it the only one with an override code but it is not hackable. Visit autowatchcanada.com. IBC put a standard in place that if every vehicle complied, the only vehicles that would be stolen would be the ones left running with the key fob inside. If you seriously want to protect your vehicle from theft, check these out.
