I remember my parents having one that used those old reel-to-reel style films. To advance the film, you'd have to squeeze the camera together, shotgun style. Kah-CHK. :)

Bump on the Photo meet.

I think that we should have a Photo contest at that. Non-auto related. Just have to decide how the judging panel should be handled...........?

What kind of prizes? TM3 swag?

think that it would encourage people to get out more and shoot.

i know with the nice weather now there are going to be a lot more pics floating around the site, and to show how diverse this club is maybe some people would like to have a "sub" forum within TM3 for those members that are interested in photography such as yourself

I didn't want to jack Aznkid.com's thread (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=189430&postcount=55) so I'll continue here:

That's about it.. I don't see myself going to a full frame anytime soon or even at all(but who really knows). Even the Sigma 28-70 2.8 i'm using now, I wish I had better range both ends. I may just go the 17-55 IS and as aznkid Sigma 50-150 2.8 to cover the range.

Ahhh...I forgot that you had Sigma 28-70 f/2.8. Then what's your reason for considering 24-70 f/2.8? Are you not satisfied with the optics/tone of Sigma? Will you trade-in the Sigma?

KenYork
06-06-2007, 05:58 PM
I find the optics of my Sigma quite good. It's more the matter of it's slow focus, especially in low light situations where i don't want to use a flash.
The 17-55 IS is actually more appealing to me since I don't feel I'll move to full frame.

As for experience - I've been running my own photography business for the past 4.5 years. I specialize in weddings, but my off-season is filled with portrait work (engagements, maternity, babies/children/families, portraits, etc). I've been lucky to have shot a bit of everything including corporate work, food, products, fashion, etc.

I also currently freelance/contract for 4 other wedding studios around the GTA which fills my year up nicely for any slow months.

I'm not much of a nature photographer, although in June I'm going to spend a week in Killarney Provincial Park shooting with a photographer who has shot for National/Canadian Geographic. Should be a good time. I might also be shooting a Jays game this summer with a Reuters photojournalist friend of mine if I can find the time.

Now just re-exploring the hobby and re-learning enjoyment and a new direction with photography. I used to do weddings, studio, events, sports, but it got to me when it felt like being a hired gun and starting to lack the art of it. Going to get back into it sometime this year. Maybe this week Sunday as I kept putting off a shoot request.

how do you find the Olympus?

i love it for what it is. Small, light, and great control with color, contrast, 'filters' done in body and in body image stabilization which works pretty well 2-3 stops, maaaaybe 4 but that's a long stretch.

Naysayers will whine about 4/3rds format mount as unpopular and dying but olympus optics is one of the best. Sure the crop factor is 2X which is great for zoom/tele, and no great or expensive for wide angle. 7-14mm f4 is $2000. DOF is also not the same DOF as film 35mm and other DSLRs with lesser crop.

the in body IS also works for non-AF lenses and adapted lenses so my Minolta Rokkor 50mm f1.4 (100mm equiv) so I could shoot at 1/30th at f1.4 at a lower ISO for low light shots.

the catch is, its a much slower camera than semi-pro, pro level. AF is accurate but not super fast. Pro level lenses are pricey (but if you have to ask, then you probably can't afford it). I may or may not use it for paid work or not yet as I rather rely on a 5D or 1D series but I have used an E-500 for studio work

Its great for travel and enjoyment though!

If you're in Markham I strongly suggest Aperture Digital Lab (www.1010foto.com)

They're a pro level lab with the same machines as Black's anyways and owned and run by real photographers/graphic designers.

They have a Epson 24" wide printer as well.

All of my stuff is done from there and have done many large prints with great results from their advice and help. Ever try to push a 3mp photo to 20" by 30" print?

They are pretty costly. You can check prices at photoprice.ca.

I prefer not to buy very expensive things from ebay...unless if it's local pickup or something. I'd rather spend more and get it from a creditable source for peace of mind.
All my lenses were bought new either from Henry's during promotions (ie. double mail-in rebate) and had them price match any lower priced competitor (ie. Downtown camera or Vistek), or had a friend/relative buy new in HK (since everything is so much cheaper there) and bring it back for me. (I like to buy new stuff since I’m anal about lens care)

Except the 70-200 was bought 2nd hand from a local camera forum (seller had it for only for 5 months with date code of 2008)...this lens is ubber expensive new.

Henry’s consistently has highest prices…don’t ever buy their shit at regular price. I still try to buy from Henry’s as long as they give me the price I want since I like to establish a relationship with the sales guy.

Can anyone recommend a good polarizer that won't kill my wallet. I don't mind paying more for quality of course but a cost within reason would be nice.

I buy filters online as it's significantly less expensive. hvstar.net
The amount of money I spend on filters depend on whether the lens is worth it, and if the filter size is common (ie. most L's are 77mm so I would buy a good 77mm since I can use it on other L's).

I have had very good results with Marumi bought from gadgetinfinity.com however they only have 55mm and 58mm sizes I believe. Came to $35 plus $10 shipping. Very minimal flare.

Recent toys:
New set of flash remotes after my last transmitter died
28mm f2.8 macro for $5
80-200mm F4 JCPenney for $20
Another camera bag

Next year:
12-60mm f2.8-4
light/flash unit stands
maybe an oly E-3

If you want something cheap that you can use. www.dealextreme.com (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14549) sells massa for like $10. I don't really know how good they are but i'm sure they'll do the job.

Picked it up in HK, since I expect to go back a few time in the next two years.

Oh I remember....so did you end up get that in Canada or HK?

Naturally I was debating over the Sigma, Canon, and Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.
I was worried about focusing issue with Sigma and didn't want to loose 1mm of Tokina (and really didn't need the 2.8) so ended up with the Canon.

Specs look nice, however more MP is just a gimmick, ISO 12800 is nice but day to day I don't feel is practical for my usage, DIGI 4 is really nice and it would require you to get different CF cards to take full advantage of the 6.3fps. Things like Live View face recognition is an obvious feature for 'everyday users' vs. more hardcore types.

This is the same setup i have.....do you ever get the error f-- on the display screen when you turn the camera on and try to take a picture and it won't let you because of that error message? I searched it on the net and it turns out its some sort of defect or something to that effect with the contacts between the lens and the body...removing and reinstalling the lense seems to do the trick to fix the matter, but its sure is a downer when you have a great shot and you can't take the picture...

I can't wait to trade the lense in and get something different, (It takes great pictures and I am happy with the lense just want to get something else) however time and money arn't on my side at the moment...in the future though :)

gabbygenier

Its not a defect. i havent had that problem but a guy i work with has had it. happens when the lens is "removed". so if you press the button to remove the lense and the lense is not removed then you will get this problem. that explains why if you remove the lense and ut ut back on the problem will be eliminated. so my assuption is when you put it away you accidentally presss the button and it thinks the lens was removed and you should put a new one on.

you got the a900?

Yes, I did something that have only done once previously...pre-ordered. I was a little disappointed at the performance of the camera only because it was so similar to my beloved A700...I was expecting a huge difference as when I upgraded from the A100 to the A700. However, the difference came when I looked through the viewfinder and snapped the shutter. I have always wanted "width" in my photos, "length" can always be achieved by buying a longer lens, but "width" on a cropped sensor is near impossible. And then I mounted my fisheye...HOLY $HIT!

My first test of the camera was at a wedding that I was helping to shoot. I hate wedding shoots, I'd rather do studio/glamour shots. It was probably because of the compressed timeline (and only being a secondary) that I couldn't get the shots I wanted and just "wasn't feeling it". Anyway, after running the photos through Lightroom (cropping, straightening and adding a preset), I was impressed with the outcome. Image quality was impressive, bokeh and shallow DOF was awesome, noise had a film-like quality. Money well spent.

Its slightly off topic, but i was wondering if i could get some opinions on my next setup.
Im looking to pick up a new D90, and upgrade from my old D50. But im not sure which lens/lenses i should go with. There are two real main configurations that im thinking about, but open to suggestions

1. The 18-105vr & 70-300vr
2. The 18-200vr

the total difference between choice 1 over choice two is only about $150. So what do you think??? Some people love the 18-200... and some people hate it... but im also curious to know as to if its such a great lens, why do so many people sell it after???

my friends that I went to dominican with me made me a actual book of a whole bunch of our pictures combined. It is really neat and thoughtful! Hey guys.... I got a question about DSLR. I've been waiting for a long long time for prices to drop and now i'm finally making the move. I'm picking up the Canon 40D this week and I was wondering, is the warranty from futureshop worth it? Is it necessary? Regular price is $299 but since i'm an employee there, i get special discount on it. I'm not going to say the price but just want to get some inputs on if its worth getting or not.

gabbygenier
01-23-2009, 03:57 AM
well i think we shouldn't tell you until u tell us how much ull pay for it haha. i think its really up to you. i have yet to have a problem really with a camera unless it was mishandled. thats y i take care of my new one more then anything i own haha. i got it for mine. the nikon comes with 2 years but if something does happen u have to send it to nikon. so if something does happen its easy to replace.

lenses i think are a different option. the nikon ones come with 5 year warranty. and if something does happen to them. well i have other lenses that i can manage with.

but again i think its really up to you.

There's no definitive answer to whether you should or shouldn't get extended warranty.
(Unless the extended warranty costs more than the item you are buying - that's a no brainer)

I believe statistically speaking extended warranty is not worth it (ie. item breaks down within 1 year manufacturer warranty or after the extended warranty, and of course never breaks down at all).

Generally extended warranty is a good idea on items costing several thousands of dollars. Not sure whether a DSLR (where body is approx. $1,300) falls in that range.

If you will use a credit card for purchase check if your credit card automatically gives you insurance and warranty on stuff you buy (normally card with annual fees may have this).

Canon has 1 year manufacturer warranty on body and lens.

If you think that you will sell the camera the extended warranty would help (assuming it's transferrable).

I DON'T want to tell you to get it or not, but I personally wouldn't (but then again I don't know what kind of discount you are getting).

Kevin@nextmod
01-23-2009, 09:12 AM
I have asked a few guys that i know that have or previously used canons. Most of them told me to skip the warranty even if its cheap. I found out that my credit card gives me extended manufacturer warranty. So i guess the FS warranty isn't necessary.

thanks guys for the input. I think i might be making the trip down to work and pick it up.

Well this is my first DSLR camera and i'm as noob as it gets. I have a lot to learn. The reason i chose the 40D for beginner camera instead of the cheaper XSI is because, i'm a type of person that , if i grow out of it, I would wnat a better one. So i decided to go with a better one and i know i will keep this for a long time. And the price is reasonable now so i'm making the move.

Well with all the sub $1000 DSLR's out now picking up a better camera is only a few hundred difference. When I picked up my XT it was about $1000+taxes and the 20D was about $1500. A better body will hold up a bit longer while you start purchasing lenses. I'm still using my XT and buying lenses.

Congratulations Pearly, welcome to the club!

Does anyone here have the Nikon 12mm-24mm lens? your thoughts/reviews?...I am strongly looking at getting this lens...and updating my 18-135 kit lens to a 18-200mm lens...

Has anyone been to the Henry's outlet store in toronto? I know they have a whole bunch of stuff there...when they say open box does that mean the lens was a demo model? or they just opened the box to show someone?

Pearly - enjoy the camera! Did you end up getting the warranty?
I bought my 40D from a place downtown around new years - it included a 4 year extended warranty.
With the reports of bad shutter buttons 1-2 years out, and other electrical issues, I would highly suggest extended warranties for the more expensive bodies - my 4 year old Digital Rebel bit the dust at Xmas - it would have been covered with a few months left :(

Kevin@nextmod

I didn't end up getting the extended warranty... I purchased it with my credit card and it had an extended manufacturer coverage for another year. And i got this at an amazing price, i can't complain as well....ahha.... and i'm so far havign so much fun with it. A fwe of my friends are already teaching me the basics to this camera. I'm looking forward to learning a lot more from all you pros

Some say "yes" citing it is the first line of protection on expensive lenses - it is cheaper to replace a filter than it is to replace a lens.

Others say "no" citing that introducing another piece of glass in front a lens will degrade picture quality.

If you do decide to get a filter, get the highest quality filter you can afford. Like with most things, there are different grades available from any particular manufacturer. IIRC, the Hoya filters that BB keeps in stock is among the lower end filters in the Hoya line (with coatings on one side or no coatings at all) - coatings will reduce the glare and ghosting.

KenYork
01-25-2009, 09:17 AM
I find a 58mm, 67mm and 77mm filter are most transferable when you upgrade lenses. So even if you have a cheap lens buy the better quality filter especially in those sizes.

Xerox
01-25-2009, 09:32 AM
^^ Right and right. But I would also add 72mm (Canon L Primes) to the list of common sizes. Also, having a good quality filter of a common size will be easier to sell.

Often ppl that say "no" will opt to use a lens hood instead. The reasoning is that a hood actually provides better protection because if you were to drop/hit the lens, the hood would take the impact rather than the filter. If the filter was hit at a certain angle (becuase you didn't have a hood) with enough force, it could warp and make it difficult or impossible to unscrew/remove the filter.

But a hood won't block foreign debris (ie. water, dirt/dust) which is a more likely scenario than dropping your lens. Not using a filter could mean that you will need to clean your lens more often; and if you do it improperly could create scratches.

If you will use a filter try to get good stuff that are multi-coated and slim/thin (this will help prevent vignetting especially if you add a polarizer on top of UV/protector).

I find that filters have very high mark-up at local retail stores so I buy filters online. HVStar.net is pretty good and stuff they sell appears to be authentic.
Most likely the one you linked at BB is a lower grade Hoya filter. HVStar has Hoya Pro1 Digital UV $31.50 USD (http://hvstar.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=115) and Hoya Pro1 Digital Protector $23.90 USD (http://hvstar.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=105).

Personally, I would gauge the value of the lens to decide whether I will get a filter for it. If it's an inexpensive lens then I am less likely to get a filter. The size of the filter (as KenYork mentioned) also plays a role.

I use either Hoya (Japan) Pro1D grade filters or B+W (German) MRC Slim grade filters (Germans produce some good optics, with filters and lenses), as well as a lens hood.
Since the filter protects my lens from debris I only need to clean the filter and never make physical contact with my lens front glass element. This is good cuz I'll probably end up scratching it by not cleaning it properly.

where is the best place to get these? Henry's?

Xerox

Depends what makes a store "best."

Popular full fledge local camera stores (others can add the list if I missed any):

Henry's (http://www.henrys.com)
Probably the largest chain with lots of locations. Friendly staff. Prices are not the best but they often have no problems price matching. They probably have the most consumer friendly sales policies (ie. refunds, returns, etc.)

Downtown Camera (http://www.downtowncamera.com/)
I believe they only have one location (guess where?) … downtown, almost next door to Henry’s downtown (making it easy to compare prices). I think service is good with competitive prices.

Aden Camera (http://www.adencamera.com/)
3 locations: 2 downtown (but they are very close to one another) and 1 in PacMall. The one in PacMall is small so you may not be able to play with something you are interested in. They have competitive prices.

Vistek (http://www.vistek.ca/)
They have several nice locations. I would say they tailor more towards the prosumers. I’ve never bought anything from there but often rented. I’ve heard ppl complain about the service (ie. Sales don’t take you seriously unless you plan on dropping serious coin). I think price is similar to Henry’s but they also should have no problems price matching.

I would suggest just going to the closest convenient location with a fair size showroom where you can try out the stuff you are in the market for. Most locations should have a range of tripods already out on display to play with.

Once you make a decision on what you want to get check prices (most places post prices on their website) and either get it from the cheapest (reputable) place or get the store of your choice to price match it.

http://www.photoprice.ca/ is a good website that shows prices of various stores (in Canada and US) - but I don't think they list tripods.

Yep. That's the one. I think they have only a few tripods out but definately not nearly as much as other larger locations (henrys has several locations uptown as well).

had a friend/relative buy new in HK (since everything is so much cheaper there) and bring it back for me.

I have my eyes on the EF 70-200mm F4/L IS USM (don't even have a body yet lol)

Just wondering, where are some some good places to buy lenses in HK? I'll be back there in April,

Was looking at this page here, http://www.ygdragon.net/index.php?page=photo/cameraprice.htm
the prices listed on there is more then local prices.

I am guessing in HK, people can negotiate in person? how much can people take off their asking prices?

Someone picked up a Canon 10-22 for me last year. Got it for 4,680.00 HKD (which is close to what your website lists currently). With the exchange rate at that time it ended being $636.13 CAD. Compare that to local price of approx. $950.00 CAD including tax. Savings of $300.00 CAD.

Your website lists the 70-200 f4 IS at 8,100.00 HKD = $1,319.19 CAD. According to photoprice.ca that same lens locally is approx. $1423.79 CAD including tax. Savings of only $104.00 CAD.

So I guess the deal is better on some lenses and not others?
The current exchange rate doesn't help either.

BTW, got the Canon 10-22 from:
Shop F, G/F., Yau Shing Commercial Centre,
51 Sai Yeung Choi St., Mongkok, Kowloon

so i got a question about taking pics. I've been playing around a lot with my 40D and i recently went to futureshops annual party at a banquet hall. The atmosphere was dim. I took some pics in manual mode and i was having so much trouble trying to take pics of people because once they move the slightest bit, the pic gets blurry. Also i have to use 1600 iso because of my shaky hands.

I know i shouldn't be using 1600 iso because the pic will be grainy. But i don't have a tripod with me and i have no clue how else i'll take pics.

My question is, how can i take some pics in this kind of environment without using iso 1600 and fast enough so the pics dont get blurry when people move?

I also didn't use flash the whole night because i really dont like the pics with flash because the pic gets really white.

i'm not a photographer but i think that one of the answers to your question would be to use a faster lens such as a 18-55 EFs F2.8. or if you can afford
get the L series 70-200 IS which is a good all around lens if you decide to go full frame in the future.

BTW, sometimes using the flash can make pictures turn out good. not just indoors but also outdoors in sunlight. I would avoid using the built in flash; that's probably why you're disappointed with the results.

Answer = faster lens (aperture of f/2.8 or larger). Unfortunately faster lenses are typically more expensive (of course there are exceptions such as Canon 50mm f/1.8).

If you don't have a fast lens, you can use flash. Pop-up flash used by itself sucks. Might be okay with a diffuser. External flash if used correctly (diffuser or bounced off ceiling) will be okay.

If you don't have fast lens or a flash, bump up the ISO. 1600 ain't that bad. If you don't plan on printing and will use just for web it's fine to use 1600, even 3200.

Tripod or IS (image stabilization) is useless for shooting ppl cuz the problem isn't necessarily the camera shake but ppl moving.

Bump up the ISO. I'd rather have decent grainy pics that can still be used rather than blurry pics that can't be used at all.

getting a separate flash was the first thing i did after getting crappy results indoors with the pop up flash. I bought the 580EXII, i use it in conjunction with my 24-105 F4 which isnt the fastest lens out there and i get realy good results. Depending on the picture i either shoot in manual, auto at F4 (fastest for my lens), or sometimes with a tripod for group shots. works well for me.

I go to the Philippines for several weeks once or twice a year; for those trips, I take my good glass and my DSLR. However, one year while in the Philippines, my fiancee and I spent a few days in Hong Kong to celebrate Valentine's Day. For that trip, I left most of my equipment at the hotel, but only took on all-round lens and my DSLR; had I had a P&S I would have brought that instead.

That question can be answered by your gf/wife/spouse/partner. I'm lucky that my gf enjoys photography as much as I do however tells me to pack minimal gear.

When I do travel I pack light and simple. One small bag to carry body and two lenses and batteries, one pocket tripod. The more crap you bring, the more of a hassle it is. I bring a point and shoot along for times i don't feel like bringing more.

Depends how much photography you want to do on your trip or if photography is the main purpose of the trip.

Resorts and cruises may not have that much to offer for photography but you could still do quite a bit with just one camera and one lens.

Authentic accessories always cost more.

Anything that properly blocks light from the sides should help (even your hand), IMO.

One thing that authentic hoods might have over cheaper ebay ones is felt lining on the inside to absorb the light rather than deflect into the lens.
Of course you can always DIY your own felt lining with hoods that don't have them.

Edit: Authentic Canon hoods are pretty over priced. If you want authentic I would check used or online.

i picked up a 40d with 17-85 yesterday. dont really know how to use it, just played around with it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/d-kwok/sets/72157615343912354/

Question with lense hood.. i see aftermarket ones on ebay for like $5. performance wise does it matter if its canon or not?

Or to put it another way... damn you Xerox (j/k'ing)...

Aftermarket ones are not necessarily designed to prevent the corners of the sensor/lens from catching the lens hood (sorry can't remember the correct term at this moment), which will cause darkening of the picture in the corners. That's why you will see the 'petal' shaped lens hoods. If the ones on ebay look like the 'petal' (any Canon lens hood will have the petal design pretty much, especially for the lens you have), then it may just work fine and you don't have to pay the Canon price of like $50 or more for a piece of plastic.

That being said, I have a couple of the round lens hoods and have not had that issue.

As Xerox says - anything that can help block light and the felt lining are all help.

It tends to be more of an issue (someone correct me if I'm wrong) when you go wide as the DOF is far enough back on the sensor such that the lens hood can get 'seen'.

(I may have used a couple incorrect terms above - sorry, got new dad brain)

Heres another one... its not the greatest as i suck at taking pics at night and i really need to learn how to.

All the pics look really good Kev.

For this shot - looks like you tried to shot it without a tri-pod - that would help, as i'm sure you know.

JMAK sighs as he really wants to go picture taking...

I bought a clone EW-73B for $7 off ebay.. will see how it works! thanks guys.

now I need bags... maybe I'll look into henrys, I have corporate discount with them. 25% off bags & filters, 10% off lenses, 7% off dslr, 15% off flash. Is there anything I should consider with my discount at henrys?

my gears at the most when I have it all will be body, 1 zoom lense, 1 telephoto & possibly a flash and 2nd battery.

Hey All,

I am looking to upgrade my camera to the Canon 50D, but I need some help with some lenses.

I would like to have 3-4 lenses not neccessarily buy them all at once but a few to cover the varying ranges.

Here's what I would need them for.

General shooting (car shots of course) portraits for family photos, wildlife so a zoom for sure, and scenic shots ie waterfalls lakes forests etc etc

I currently have a 50mm 1.8 by canon and have yet to decide if I buy a 50D kit or body alone.

What can you photo pros recommend?

What camera do you currently have? and do you really need to upgrade it? If you already are using a DSLR I'd recommend building your lens collection before moving to a new body.

What to recommend... It would depend on if you want to buy L glass(24-70L, 24-105 both ~$1200). For most decent quality lenses you're looking to pay about ~$550-800 brand new.

I hope the following Canon setups from this thread help.

there's very few reason for upgrading bodies i find.

Legit reasons to upgrade:
#1: You broke your camera
#2: You need a second camera
#3: Sports, Action photography and really need the AF/FPS performance
#4: You need more megapixels for bigger prints.
#5: The cleaner the noise at high ISO, the closer to godliness

KenYork

#6 Because you want one(this is important)

I just find good glass more important, transferable to new body's and maintain their value better.

Thanks for the info,

Reason for upgrade is I need more mega pixels as we want to make large prints for framing, also faster burst shooting for wildlife is needed.

My thoughts:

General shooting (car shots of course): Wide and telephoto. ie. 17-40 F4L, EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS & 70-200

Portraits for family photos: Fast primes and/or telephoto. ie. 35 1.4L, 50 1.2L, 50 1.4, 70-200, or even EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS

Wildlife: Telephoto. Really depends how serious you are. ie. 70-200 + teleconverter if you need more range or 300mm+ if you are serious.

Scenic shots: Wide. 17-40 F4L
