First View of New Mazda3!

I'm sitting here in Denver getting ready to head back to Canada after a couple of full days at the National Dealers Meeting! We were shown several of the new vehicles that Mazda is going to launch in the next few years. The highlight for me was a sneak peek at the next generation Mazda 3.

The spy shots don't do the car justice. It's a fantastic design and I think all of you would be as excited as I am about the direction the car is headed.

Mazda is understandably very tight lipped about the new M3 and although I know it's not fair, I can't describe the vehicle to you in detail. It takes the current design and moves it to a whole new level. The best thing I can suggest to you is if you want to think about what the new M3 is going to be like, check out the next gen 2009 Mazda6. That will give you an idea of the direction Mazda is heading.

Until Mazda releases more information on the new Mazda 3, the new Mazda 6 is confirmation that the company is going to be the best Japanese car company in the world. Specifically, check out the dual tail pipe exhaust on the GT model, the performance of the M6, some of the technology features such as bluetooth for MP3 players, etc.

I'm sure Mazda has the design philosophy for the Mazda3 down tight. Just hope it doesn't turn out like the Subaru Impreza. lol. The Mazda6's front facial reminds me of the Acura TSX and a Lexus from the 3/4 view.

Probably not..there probably going with teh same inline 4 2.5 engine as the mazda 6. My guess is there going to put it up to about 170 or 180

Well the dual exhaust isn't a true duel. Its just 1 pipe from the flex pipe all the way to the back and split into 2 mufflers, thats all

Dual exhaust means nothing. It would only be one pipe than splits to either 2 mufflers or 1 muffer and 2 tips. No HP gains here at all. More looks and possible sound.

The 2009 Mazda6 actually looks better than I imagined from the test mule. Funny how an angle can make a difference.


180hp... pffff... that's not much with dual exhaust? that's lame.
Not surprised really, many FWD cars that have dual exhausts aren't true duals and are there for aesthetic purposes. All it is is a short pipe branched off from the main system usually after the muffler. Now if you ran a dual straight from the headers/manifolds, then I'd expect a performance gain :)

So no hatch or wagon for the 6.

We've only seen mules of the 3 sedan so far.

The 2.5 engine from the Mazda6 in Europe puts out 170hp/166lb/ft. There was no change in the HP/Torque ratings for the new 2.0 engine either. Although both get better mileage (5% less for the 2.5 and 10% less for the 2.0). I suspect little will change for NA.

It looks like they increased the compression ration to 10.8 on the 2.5. I am surprised they couldn't get more power out of it.

I also noticed that the new 2.5L now requires Premium fuel. I wonder if this is the new trend now.

For the M6 - I saw a few months back info that the "top level" car would have b/t 220-250hp and all wheel drive available in ALL models - and I did come across a few pics of a wagon variant which was absolutely beautiful - if I find the link I'll post it.

Mazda is totally focused on the launch of the new 2009 Mazda6 late this summer. I wouldn't count on any information being released on the new Mazda3 until that launch is complete and everything is rolling. Hopefully once that happens they will then provide some information about what and when we can expect a new Mazda3.

The rear of the new 6 kinda looks like they've styled it w/ a cue to the last-gen Millenia. Especially how the top of the trunk/spoiler has that protruding rounded curve to it.

I happen to like the new 6 aswell, it's featured in the new gran turismo ps3 game aswell, it gives you a better idea since it's set in 3d. I'm sure the new 3's will look very similar, I'd be curious to see the hatch/speed though.

Its slightly better. You won't really feel it too much. whats wrong with 2.3 economy? If it was that bad, i dont think majority of the 3 owners have a 2.3

Based on the last spy photos of the sedan, I think the other image is pretty accurate. Look at the hood emblem being on the hood and not the front grill. There is also a small grill between the hood and the lower grill, just like the other picture. Also note the detail in the fog light area.

I hope it turns out ugly. The more stupid and dumb it looks, the less people will buy it. Then they will be forced to make such a drastic changeover it will look really good when they do, do it.

From all the spyshots I've seen and things I've read, it doesn't seem too much has changed. The cars we are all driving right now for the most part (late 2006-present) carry the new chassis from the Euro Focus and S40. The new ones don't have a heavy revision over these models. All it is, is a face lift.

I'm wondering if there will be side reflectors on the rear or if they have been removed and the red in the tail light will replace it. These pics may not "fully" represent what the NA 3 will look like so who knows. It's looking pretty good though

looks ok, not exactly a major re-design though is it? Essentially they changed the headlights, rear lights and front grille and fog lights. That's just a lot of cosmetic changes. They also removed the side mouldings and gave the car a more sloped, rakish look on the side. Not exactly earth shattering! guess they didn't want to mess with a good thing but this seems to lack a little courage.

Don't think so. Odometer and Speedometer are in their "normal" locations. Looks like the digital display is for the Radio/Stereo, Temperature and climate control functions.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the new interior based on these pics, but would have to sit in one before I make any final evaluation. What bothers me most is the long instrument gauge on top of the circular speedo and tach gauges. Reminds me of mid 90's Pontiac's.

It may be a 2L hatch, it has European plates and they don't currently get the 2.3L option. It's possible they wouldn't get the new 2.5L as well.

It's not the Mazda6. The Mazda6 has the licence plate on the trunk face, plus it doesn't have a 3rd brake light on the trunk. That does look like the new Mazda3

That dealer pic is a photoshop. They took the mazda3 bumper and strecthed the reflectors a bit, and the wing is just a chop. Poor light conditions is a bad photoshoppers dream - They can hide shoddy work in the mess.

In the background is the 2nd-gen Mazda6 that the rest of the world gets (i.e. outside of N. America), and the 2nd-gen Mazda3 sedan taillights are very, very similar to them.

I don't get why when the LCD digital displays are only over the center console, why does the curve need to extend to above the dashboard too... not liking that curve extension on top of the dashboard... keep it right above the center console woulda made it pretty much perfect for me.

Eesh. I'm really up in the air on this new 3... but I've felt that way about may pre-production cars I ended up loving.

This definitely looks like a design I will have to see on the road a bit to start liking.

Don't get me wrong, it's attractive... I'm just not liking it more than what we already have.

The interior seems to be too much for a Mazda3. Part of what makes the current Mazda3 interior so attractive is it's Applesque simplicity.

Its reasonable to say, how the Mazda 3 looks in pictures now and how it really looks when its out are two different things

It wasn't the 6... it was the new 3 and I have to say that anyone that came by got a glimpse, but for the sake of my job I couldn't post it here..

Besides it was a short movie, from a cell phone from 60 meters away... couldn't see much anyhow.
