O God I might in deep shit.:bang

Hahaha. I love your story! I could be wrong, but I think it actually boosts performance and drains more gas??

just say it does, don't think she'll know.
and if she asks around, and ppl tell her it doesn't.
Just say my parts are tailored to gas mileage.

but seriously though, don't let a girl tell you what your hobby can or cannot be.
Its not like you your hobby is shooting random people.

Agreed with the bolded fully.

Fuman... I hope..you mean "its NOT like your hobby is shooting random people"? :chuckle

I would THINK that a CAI would give you either the same MPG or a microscopic improvement as.. unless I'm mistaken, the CAI gives you more kick at a lower RPM, so theoretically, you wouldn't be revving that high to zoom zoom... hence saving gas. Just a theory.

I don't know if im 100% right but I don't believe so... I think it'll save you some if anything.. (ook at my post).

Though as I said, I don't know if I'm 100% right so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Put it this way - even if it saved you a tiny bit on gas, you'd be more inclined to rev higher/drive at WOT with both parts installed.

As far as the CAI goes, the impact on your gas mileage will depend on how you drive your car.

If you do a lot of stop-and-go city driving and like to take your revs a bit higher before shifting you'll find an increase in HP but also your mileage will drop. Reason being your engine can breathe easier with the CAI so it'll draw and burn more fuel to mix with all that nice extra air!

If you're doing mostly highway driving, the CAI should help increase your mileage as the greater volume of cooler air it provides should help your engine burn fuel more efficiently at constant rpm/speed.

That's the theory anyway. In truth, with CAI it's truly a YMMV situation!

U'd burn a crap load of gas after ur install for sure. I know i did. After i got my cai i revved it everytime i got a chance to. But thats only me cuz i have nothing better to do. As for exhaust, im pretty sure it will burn more gas. You cant exchange power for nothing, everything comes with a cost, in this case it would be the gas.

For having a CAI and CBE, you pay the price of your gf yelling at you :chuckle

But anyways, i doubt u'd noticed that much difference. possibly 25-30km diff? not too sure though as i only have CAI, i get the same results if i drive normally.

The key here is how you drive the car. Both of these mods can save you gas AND give you more power.

If not for the extra noise, manufacturers would put them on the car stock. The reason they don't, is that regular folks would never buy a car that sounds like that.

Both the intake and exhaust mods allow the engine to breathe easier. This means that it takes less power to run the engine because it's easier to draw in air, and it doesn't have to work as hard to push out the exhaust. If all you're interested in is saving gas, then this means you need less energy for the car to drive the same way it used to, and should use a little less gas. It might not be much, but it's something.

The downside, is that for us enthusiasts, the car also becomes more fun to drive, which tends to give the driver a heavier foot. With the great sound and available power, you'll be more inclined to push the car a little more and will likely end up using more gas.

So really... if you can control yourself, then you can save gas and not be lying to your woman when you say there's an improvement. But if not... well... don't show her your gas bills. :chuckle

like said above, if your driving habits stay they same, your fuel economy will increase.

mine did, i tihnk i was getting at least 100kms more to the tank...until i installed my header... lol.

and another tip, if your going to buy aftermarket wheels, make sure you look at the weight before you buy them. my steelies with tires are 37 lbs, my A/M 17's with tires are 44lbs. thats 7lbs more a corner!

My friend drives a Toyota Matrix XR (stanard) and when he filled his tank up he got about 630 km's off it if he drove like a grandma (60% highway 40% city). When he put his exaust and cai on and drove like a grandma, doing about the same ratio of city/highway driving he got 680 km's. Not a huge difference but if you driving like grandma all year you'll save

CAI = more hp, reduced MPG (with the same driving conditions).

Cat-Back = same... key word "UNDER SAME DRIVING CONDITIONS"

People lose MPG when they get them because they accelerate more rapidly, drive faster ect... but if you keep it exactly the same, you will use less fuel with them yes.

Wow....I'm gonna get my gf to read this thread :)

I'll just tell her that "intake" and "turbo" are the same thing ;)

I saw about .4L/100km average better with CAI and down pipe on my MS3, 100% highway, cruise on at 110km/h. 100% city driving I see anywhere from .6-1.0L/100km better fuel economy. I drive very very easy during the work week, shift at 2000rpm all the time. Easier on the car and lets me save gas for the fun week end driving. =)

Installed the MazdaSpeed Cai and Vibrant cat-back, have seen improved gas mileage of 70+ kilo per fill-up or approx 1.5kilo per litre>No granny driving :)

So let's assume:

Cat-back exhaust sedan/hatch - $488.00
CAI 2.0/2.3 - $268.00

Getting a Cat-back + CAI = 756$

Accepting that you save .4L/100km (as stated in a previous post), then after 150,000KM, you would save 600L (150,000KM/100KM*.4L). If gas cost average $1.25, you would save 600*1.25=$750

.... now that doesn't take into account the time-value of money... or the fact that in the next 4-5 years, gas will be much higher than $1.25/L. Also how long do those mods last?

Air filter will have to be cleaned bi-yearly (which is free, rinse thuroughly with soapy water for Mazdaspeed CAI, then dry out)

Most cat-backs are stainless steel, wich SHOULD last a lot longer than the stock exhaust.

The bottom line is, if you want an intake and exhaust, just get it and don't nit pick on gas saving it MIGHT provide.

I think the point here is that there should be a noticeable improvement in gas mileage, however slight in some cases!....Obviously it will take years to recuperate the cost of the add-ons, but it will eventually pay for itself.
As for the life of the components I would expect my MazdaSpeed cai and especially the Vibrant exhaust (being as its made from aircraft grade SS) will last years beyond the break even point.....And gas mileage aside you can't put a price on the sheer enjoyment felt everytime you press on the accelerator :chuckle ....that's priceless!!

A little off topic, but how much does it cost to install a MS3 cat-back system approx. At the dealer or otherwise?

I had my system installed at NoyzBoyz for $80....Can't see anyone charging much more.

I can't imagine anyone charging much less, either. Sounds reasonable to me.
