View Full Version : My tire (Nankang's) blew!

So driving this morning on the 407 my rear tire decides to blow!
It's pretty bad - the WHOLE INNER SIDE WALL literally tore apart (I will upload pics later)
The tire was bought a year ago from SSG
Has anyone had this ever happen? There is some damage to the car (the wheel well has some scratches)
Now what?

Sorry to hear MK. Not sure where to go from here, were your tires balding or anything? I know they're only a year old but depending on driving habits, wear may have been a factor, not sure? Other than that, I've never heard of this, its not hot enough outside for temps to be a factor, could you possibly have hit a sharp groove on the road or something? Sorry can't be much help, gl with everything and keep us updated. I guess its a good time since this is going on:

That sucks MK, at least you're okay.
I had on Nankangs on my stock 3 rims last season with no issues. Just had to replace them b/c of the crazy camber wear.
Pics of the damage as well.

sorry to hear that, probably wall side damage. As much as i hate to say this, but I think you going to have to buy new tire and repair your rim or buy new one..

Yeah I wouldnt want those tires ever again anyways after what happened
I already made an appointment to go to Tires23 this afternoon (Falkens FTW?)

Really??
Falkens > General.
I rather spend the extra pennies on a good tire. Your life lies on 4 patches of rubber.

But makes me wonder why mazda gives us horrible goodyears.
but anyways. My next tire is definitely either yoko's, falkens, or dunlops. Tires I've had good experiences with.

Mine has Toyos
I didn't like those either. They squirmed and squealed during my test drive on a GS. Too soft for my liking.

Everyone seems to be assuming that it was a bad tire! ...Could just be you hit something on the road and it punctured the tire~(most likely)!! ...Some brands of tires will come with a limited road hazard warranty, covering such things....Just wondering have you checked on that MK? The tire could be covered!
Oh and get Michelins next time!

the goodyear rs-a we get with the 3 is terrible.
falken and dunlop are owned by Sumitomo...and sumitomo has an alliance with goodyear....so, they're all in bed with each other :loco
sorry to hear about the nankang's MK...have you contacted SSG to see if there is any type of manufacturing defect warranty on the tire?
FLIPDADY

There are no road hazard warranties offered by any tire manufacturer anymore. Only the suppliers and independant shops off their own warranty.

I don't know why everybody hates the RS-A's so much. Yes they suck in snow, but for the average driver using it as a three season tire it's perfectly fine. We have 31000km on our set and they've been great. They are not wearing prematurely, are relatively quiet, and have otherwise been a fine tire.
BTW, MK if you go to Allen he'll likely push the Falken 912's on you since he has a warehouse full of them. The good news is that I have a set and can attest that they are a great tire......for the money. If you want detailed feedback on them PM me.

My bf has these on his GTI and loves them so I'm gonna pick up the ZE912's from Tires23 because they can do everything today at their shop :)

The RS-As are okaay, its just that I expect more and doesn't really bring the best ouf of the 3. I've already pushed the tire to its limit. True it does its job but a sport hatch deserve a sport tire.
Dunlop SP5000s, Falken 512/912, Conti Sports comes to mind.

The Mazda3 isn't a sports car (MS3 exluded), so let's just clear that up right off the bat. It is a 4 cylinder economy car, if you choose to drive it like it's a sports car that's fine, but they have to select a tire that will appeal to the general buying public. The majority of people who by the Mazda3 will not drive the car like members of an enthusiast forum would.
Anyways, back on topic: MK, I think you'll really like the Falken's, I'm quite impressed thus far.

That looks like it was running low on pressure... you may have not even noticed it, and it heated up until it eventually blew through the sidewall...
Is your wheel really damaged?

i was gonna say that it looks over pumped, and air inside got hot and spread even more causing tire to blow

I checked tire pressure last week and it was fine

You didn't blow that tire you massacred it! :chuckle
Where did they see the "bumps"?? if the bumps were on the sidewall it would have meant that the belts had popped or shifted and they should have warned you it was dangerous to drive on that tire....asswipes :flaming

That shop didn't practice due dilegnece either. They should have explained to you the bumps in the tires.

what offset and wheel/tire size you running? Are you sure you don't rub the inside of the tire at full lock?

Yea, I agree. The MZ3 is no where near sports car. Same with the MS3, no where near it. Sports cars aren't practical, they are about looks and status and give no compromises to performance. People think I'm too much of a purist, but to me a sports car HAS to be RWD, 2 door, 2 seater. The Miata is a sports car I'd like to own some day.

My mechanic told me this after the job was already done. I think he was basing it on what the insurance companies consider it. He said he had a customer who was given a higher quote for a Mazda 6 than a 3. He also mentioned something about the way the rear tires were set (the camber?) so you could take corners better.
And I got Michelin Pilot Exalto tires. I don't know if they're especially expensive. I didn't pay for them. My bf did.
