I haven't been posting on this board this week because I just recently got a Nokia N95 8GB (locked to Rogers) and have been all over other sites and forums learning more about it. This is the best phone I've ever had hands down. Wifi works great. I installed Garmin Mobile XT and North American maps and they work great with the built-in GPS. The built-in web browser is freaking awesome - comparible to Opera browsers. The 5.0MP camera is the best I've used in a camera-phone, although it isn't a proper substitute for a real camera. It supports video calling, but I don't have a use for it. 3G is awesome - better coverage than GSM where available. I could talk for days about all the cool features.

The only downside to this phone so far is the battery life - but as long as you charge it properly and regularly, it won't be a problem.

I thought that I would never go back to Nokia after switching to Sony Ericsson, but I was wrong.

To anyone thinking about getting one, I highly recommend this phone. It's probably the best non-smart-phone out there.

it is a very nice phone. I was gonna get the regular N95 but got an N73 instead cause i didn't need all the functions of the N95 and the N73 was a lot cheaper.

did you get an unlocked one or the one through rogers?
Rogers data plans scare me so I'm hoping that by using wifi I can get around having one...
does the gps rely on data or does it work just like any standalone?

Oops sorry, read the post more carefully now.... but does it require data to use the gps?

If you use the built in Nokia Maps, then you have to use data to get voice directions. But no one uses that.

I've installed Garmin maps and it gives me free (no data) full voice directions. It works really well.

This phone has several options for GPS, including an internal GPS receiver, so you never need to use data if you don't want to.

To each his own. I actually got this phone for free :bana. There will always be a better phone coming down the pipes. I'm not going to wait for another phone that hasn't been proven yet. There was a lot of hype about the K850i when it came out. Lots of people ran out and got it, only to discover it is a huge disappointment with a lot of bugs. This is the 4th version of the N95 and the Rogers firmware is solid. I used to say that I would never go back to Nokia, but this phone really is freaking awesome. I've been modifying it and installing stuff on it like crazy.

Can you share with us some sites you visit as your resources for hacking the N95? I'm very interested in this phone and some details on how to install maps on it...like TomTom as well as Garmin...

Also, with all the maps installled (I suppose at least all of NA if not NA + EU), how much memory is used?

Thanks for the PM...good looking out!

I was thinking more like: any N95 user site(s) that you'd recommend for me to start my research on what I can do with it?

For curiosity sake why would you not say it? Its funny cause I actually recognized some of the ppl on this site on that "other" site. As a matter of fact I actually ended up buying a k790 from The Biz several months ago (Great guy btw) on the other site.

Did you go through retentions to get the phone for free? I was peeved when I saw the BB price ($249.99)

Yeah BB lists it @ 250, even though i think the cheapest you can get it from rogers is 399.99 with a vision plan +3 years

whoa

for free is a good price lol.

personally, its not a smartphone if it doesnt have a full qwerty keypad that isnt touch based. maybe its just me but touch keypads dont work for me at all, and t9 and manual taping is just to slow lol

Just picked up my N95, and I have to second that review, what a sweet device. SO many options and features and connections etc, still trying to figure it all out! I'm a little annoyed at just how much software rogers has pilled into it all complete with rogers logos etc but I suppose that is to be expected.

Same boat. I already have the iPhone, but when it comes out on Rogers, I can wrangle a deal for the 2nd Gen iPhone instead of the now devalued N95 8GB (it's still the better device tho, I believe).

I think i gotta play with the n95 for a bit and make my decision. I was watching a video last night comparing the iphone and the blackberry bold and the iphone won me over. Very cool phone.

Yeah the BB price is insane! I actually won the phone in a raffle. Lucky me. :)I've always wanted this phone, but didn't want to spend the money. Now I'm an addict.

Well this thread is as old as can be...but since I have now had the phone for a long time I can still say it is amazing. I always find it annoys blackberry and iphone users when they realize I can do most everything they can often with more flexibility and customizing options. About once I month I start looking for something new and cool to do with the phone and it never lets me down... blogging, geo tagging, multiple gps programs, games, acellerometer based things, movies, music, VOIP calling! which is awesome.... the list is endless, if you can think of it chances are there is some software to do it for ya!

On another note, just unlocked my N95 8GB for 12$ which i figure is a good deaL!

Do you have to use Garmin to have the internal GPS work with it?

I'm looking for a N95-8GB right now for the fiancee.

Unlocked N95- 8Gb can be bought new for $580-600. and the newer model N96 can be bought from $710-750.

You can download tom tom Navigator 7 for these phones.

I like TomTom, and that is why I've asked. But from what I have been reading, Garmin XT is the only one that works with the N95's internal GPS. I'd still install TomTom on it, but for my use, not the gf.

I've been looking on HoFo, and unlocked, 9/10 N95-4 8GB are around $250...thanks for the heads up!
