I hate our mayor. He's out to take our money in any way he can.

Awesome, another $120 for me to give to the city! Blunty, do we know exactly where the funds are likely to be spent (please say public transit).

Ask Mr. Miller.

However, I am sure it won't be too long before other municipalities strike an agreement with the province.

BTW, if you are going to complain, please do not complain to the Private Issuers who are going to collect this tax at the time you renew you sticker...they are just collecting the tax on behalf of the City of Toronto. All complaints should be directed to the City of Toronto.

From what I've read, the tax is easy to circumvent...

register car at an address outside of the t.dot?

if so that could also potentially lower your insurance too.

What a money grab :flaming. I'm just hoping other cities/municipalities don't jump in.

Uhm...uhm...uhm...is this a trick question? Can I call in for a life line?

The tax will be based on your residential address, not your mailing address.

It is Toronto only, for now...

September 1, 2008 is when they start collecting.

i am ok with this, if the money is used responsibly to improve the city in any constructive way. but it would be most appropriately spent on public transit, or in initiatives to curb urban sprawl.

I just wish they went about collecting this in a different manner.

1. What are the odds of the money allocated for it's proper use in the future?
2. What government taxes collected have been entirely allocated to the program in which it was designed for?

The gas tax brought in at the federal and provincial level were originally designed to pay for the repair and construction of infrastructure (roads for cars). The majority of the gas taxes on both levels goes to pay for the Health Care now. A small percentage goes to infrastructure.

As with any tax once it becomes a revenue stream it is allocated to where they have a shortfall in funding. Not necessarily where it was designed to go to. Tell the public one thing but do another. Anyone remember the Provincial Health Tax? You'd be shocked to find out that a portion of it went to fund some infrastructure projects.

meh...

Politicians, can't live with them can't shoot them.

Yup.

It'll end up in general revenue, and then handed over to Mr. Miller's friends as the plastic-bin-making company or whoever else has him in their pocket.

(Don't have it in front of me, but...)

I believe your vehicle ownership and plate portion has your/the vehicle address on it. It wouldn't matter where you went to renew unless you changed that first.

Yea but I meant like do all MTO office know of this Toronto only tax? It's almost cheaper to do a change of address on the card and change it back after lol

I would also recommend people to go before september and see if you can renew it for a few years right away. I know I paid for 2 years last time :)

not sure how they can justify this when the public transit system currently in place in one of the worst systems in the world

Cardinal Fang
05-22-2008, 10:58 AM
That's exactly how they justify most anything related to transit. We need a better transit system, we're broke and the government won't give us money so we'll take it from you.

Please ignore the pay raises we give ourselves as that has nothing to do with this.

What if you renew for two years, are you taxed twice? so instead of it being $60 it would be $120?

Tax you currently pay goes to the Province. This is a special tax that goes only to the City of Toronto. Call it the Take it Like a Man and Shut the Fark Up Tax.

i agree with you man!

it is too bad.

i was also thinking more about this, and i think it is unfair to low income people. i would like to see some stratified payment scheme, or dont pay unless household income is over XX dollars.

Yes, the fee is per year.
