If you want the OEM brakes which aren't all that great IMO, go see Joe aka Flipdady at MoT. I'm running Hawk pads as well as EBC greenstuff, but I prefer the Hawk's which you can pick up from Tires23, one of the sponsors here on the board. I'm still running OEM rotors which I picked up from Joe. For install, go see Jimmy at Streetperformance, great price, great service and great work.

I think I paid 200 - 220 at Speedtech last summer. I had rotors and pads installed on all 4 corners.

Call Jimmy though; I don't know what his price is for a brake install, but I've been very satisfied with his work and prices.

*EDIT* price above is for install only. I paid around 550 - 600 for rotors, and about 150-160 for pads.

With Hawk pads, oem rotors and install your looking in the neighborhood of $580~give or take....check with our sponsors and Flippy at Mot for the best deals like the others said.

sorry noob question here

But I need to change my pads

I've been looking at the Hawk HPS

Is it necessary to change the rotors though so soon? I have an 05, just a daily driven car. Do you all change the rotors when you change pads? that sounds like it could get very expensive =P

Not necessarily. How many KM's do you have on your current rotors? Are they warped?

If you want, you could have them slightly machined before installing new pads. Sometimes it maybe hard to notice without braking at high speeds that your rotors are warped, which in turn will affect the performance of your new pads and overall safety.

I have 31k now on my '05 hatch
Rotors don't seem warped

someone told me on bcmazda3 that isn't not necessary to even machine the rotors if they aren't slotted. I guess i'll just pick up some pads, and go somewhere to get them installed. If there are any probs, i'm sure they'll let me know =P

you do NOT have to change rotors and pads together.
You can change one without the other.

I'd suggest you get a second opinion, that just seems way too early to need new pads....for instance, I'm at 72k and still on oem's.

Yeah you're probably right

Especially when they also told me at that time my tires needed to be replaced, and they would give me a deal at $900 tax in :loco

Never trust the service department!!

Flagrum_3

Well tires I can probably see considering the oem's are not that great but $900 for tires? They'd have to be Michelin's and one of thier top tires at that price!

Oh and congrats on the new little one!

Thank you, he's a cutie

and no, they wanted $900 for the stock RSA's

Wild Weasel

Stock RSA's should last a hell of a lot longer than 31k! Those you can just look at though to know if they need replacing.

Same for the brakes. Shouldn't need replacing. What dealer do you go to?

As for resurfacing... if there's no vibration or anything when you're braking, then this isn't needed. You can look at them yourself to decide if they need to be replaced, though I highly doubt they do.

Whoever told you that only slotted rotors need to be machined though, was out in left field. Most shops won't touch slotted rotors since they don't want to risk damage to their equipment.

You're better off getting new OEM rotor from MOT than getting them machined, cost is comparable.

Just curious, was your last service the 24k service? and did they perform or mention the brake service required at that time? (brakes cleaned, sliders need to be cleaned and lubed)...this is fairly important on our 3's, especially the back calipers!!....but I'm also amazed they didn't try to sale you on new tranny, brake, and engine coolant flushes :chuckle

Give Joe (FlipDaddy) a call at Mot he'll help you out, I think they are somewhere in the neighbourhood of $55-60 ea.

Great quality (compared to cheap china ones I had before).

just a side note.. the front brakes on this car were the EASIEST brakes I've done. No bulky slider pins to hammer out (the bolts double up as sliders so they come out easy) and no fighting... I recommend doing it yourself if you can loosen and tighten bolts. If not.. I'll do them for Beer AND sexual favors :P LOL

Anywho... Looks like Hawks are the pads of choice eh? Are the ends of the liner chamfered? Most reputable manufacturers are doing this now. The rotors are new on the car, but these cheap ass pads really chewed up the one side. Anyone know a place that resurfaces?

Incidentally, if anyone needs them replaced, I just got my fancy new rear caliper tool, I'm dying to try it out, and I'm nearly out of beer. :) It should turn the regular 20 minutes of cursing into a minute or two of tool-using.

For this, I can be free most evenings during the week. I'm on the east side near the Zoo so if you can get out there for 5:30 or so, we just need to pick a day.

Bubba: Yeah. I got a tool specifically for turning in rear pistons, and not one of those stupid cube things. :) You can do the job without it (as I've been doing up until now) but this should make it a lot easier. I'm just looking forward to finding out whether that's true. :)

You didn't go with the e-top (PPF low-mettalic) Pads? is there a reason why you didn't with the cross drilled?

i was reading in a lot before,

i found out many ppplz saying that drilled are prone to cracking ...
and with new pads there are no more gases- so no point in getting drilled.

Nope i picked way more exepnsive Hawk Pads - and i dont see any improvement - over the ATS ones that i had

And hawk pads are noisy ...
