View Full Version : Help ID & trouble shoot this HID bulb

Got these from The Xenon Store/Devin as a warranty replacement for my Prolumen kit which I bought from him.
- What brand are these bulbs?
- How hot do HID bulbs generally get? I tested these by connecting them to the igniter but didn't mount them into the headlight. As I was holding it in my hand (with the plastic protector in place) it get pretty hot. How hot do you ask? Scroll down and see for yourself.
I am worried this will melt my headlight if installed.
- The bulb turns off after about 2 minutes. I think the longest it stayed on for was 4 minutes. If I turn off my light and turn them back on they turn on again (I guess cuz it "ignites" it)

christ, I'm gonna take a stab it's 'at least' 55W.
I'm pretty sure my 35W stay pretty darn cool in comparison, not at least to melt plastic.

The wiring and case looks like Apexcones to me. My 35W had cloudy cases, but my 55W had clear cases like that. Not sure if thats a good point to base it on. But the rest of the wiring looks exactly like the ones I have.

I thought that too but they were hooked up to Prolumen 35W kit.

Can anyone else provide any input?

They don't look like the newer Prolumen bulbs as the the return wire on the bulb itself is not on the same side as the tab. Also the Prolumens that I have do not have the extra wires with the male connectors. Last but not least, the wires on the Prolumens are yellow and black.

I thought Prolumen bulbs had black and yellow wires. These look like Apexcones as eqlso mentioned.
But how about the heat? I really don't want my projector housing to melt!
Also the fact that it shuts off every few minutes.
Are these not designed to work with Prolumen kit?
Are they defective?

My ProLumen has black and yellow to the bulbs but it looks nothing like what you got. I'm not talking about just the ballast either (which in your picture is igniter+ballast I assume).
Your missing the spacer, and the two extra male spade connectors aren't present in my kit. Each of my bulbs has 2 independent weather proof plugs.

What gets me is the extra two wires (those spade connectors) through the rubber grommet. A kit for our car shouldn't have those, unless you have angel eyes or something of the like. If it looks like it came with the bulb, something is missing. Fan accessory? lol.

Are these the same ones you had problems before?

WTF.....Are these warranty replacements?

WTF.....Are these warranty replacements?
I purposely left out that detail but here's the full story.
Yes. After 3 months and 5 days (but to be fair 21 of those days was USPS shipping - but WTF, I get stuff from HK faster than that) it finally arrived.
My joy was short lived when I opened the package to find this. It looked nothing like the Prolumen bulb it was to replace and I clearly mentioned in my emails (several times) that I have a Prolumen 6000K kit. But still, I was happy to have finally received a replacement and hooked it up to test it and you know the rest from there.
And again to be fair, I have not and plan not to contact the supplier regarding this. I've decided to just get a new Prolumen bulb from somewhere else. Tired of waiting and getting the run-around.
Edit: If it wasn't obvious from reading the other thread (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?p=267224#post267224), the supplier I'm talking about is The Xenon Store / Devin - who's no longer a sponsor here.

The two extra spade wires through the rubber gromet is supposed to be there. The other end of those two spade wires connect to the big plug that goes in the ballast. I'm assuming they put the wires through the gromet since you would attach it to the stock halogen bulb plug, which would located near the bulb.

Sorry to hear that you got the run around.

Which is odd because none of the Prolumen bulbs have the extra wires. The only ones I've seen are the Apexcones which do have them.

I received the exact same replacement bulb yesterday. Found it a little odd that they were red/black instead of the originals that came w/ my Prolumen kit (yellow/black). I hooked them up and they work np so I'm fine w/ them for now. I'm gonna keep an eye on it the next week or so. The replacement bulb took a little longer to arrive than I expected but it works so that's all that matters to me.
Only thing I had to remove was the bigger rubber grommet and replace it w/ the one from my old bulb.

That's good to hear. I too would have been fine with it if it didn't have over heating issues and it stayed on for more than a few minutes.
I guess it's just bad luck with mine.

Just re-read your posts... sorry to hear your bad luck :( The overheating and malfunctioning luckily hasn't occurred w/ mine. I purposely kept the HIDs on on my way into work this morning to test them out, so far so good. Where did you end up buying the other replacement? I think my other one is fading on me now :( Its output is a little dimmer than the new bulb I just put in. Sucks too, I only had the kit installed last April.

Well the ProLumens have these wires too, they just don't come with the bulb, but normally with the ballasts/ignitors. Its the circled wire here:

Anyways, would it help if I took a pic of my 55w apexcone bulb?

That would be great eqlso :) Have you noticed anything wrong w/ your headlight housings to date?

Maybe there is failure in the ballast providing more power then it should.. causing it to shutdown temperarly. But it would make sence for it to melt, since the heat has no escape from the tube, causing it to heat up very quickly and melt the plastic. I would find out exactly from the dealer you got these from if its safe. He should answer all these questions.
