I am trying to get an oil filter wrench for the 2.3. Madzastuff.com has them for $12.75 but the shipping is insane. The parts girl at the local dealer doesn't have any info and I can't find anything on the net in Canada.
Any help would be appreciated.

I got mine through mazdastuff. But I shipped it to my friend in Buffalo, so it didn't cost much for S&H. This tool is a must if you change the oil yourself. It's the only one that I could find that's made for it and is metal.

Try calling the different dealerships, I had to call three different ones before I found it. The dealerships sell them for around $25.

Anyone got a part number for it? That would make it much easer to find through the dealers. Joe?

I gave that part number to the parts girl here and she couldn't find it, saying it might be a US part number? Is there a difference?

I got a metal one with the correct number of sides (ie:perfect fit) from Queenston Auto in Streetsville (Mississauga) for about 12 bucks. If anyone is interested, I can look up the brand tonight, but I know the receipt is long gone.

Select Mazda in Stoney Creek had about 5 of them when I got mine last month. I don't know if they still have any in stock though.

Interesting. Until now, I had no idea what these things looked like. Seeing that pic above, it looks like just a standard oil filter wrench. I have a plastic one at home I paid $5 for that fits the filter on my Sunfire.
I know there are various sizes for different filters, though they all look about the same.
Is this a standard size or is it something that's Mazda-only or some such thing?

It's NOT standard. The shape has an unusual number of sides that you just can't get at a regular place like CDN Tire.

The #2 black ABS plastic one from Ctire is 15 flute but 75mm.
The MAZDA one is 14 flute @ 75.6mm.

The one I bought at Queenston is 14 sided, I think labelled as 76mm, but it is a perfect fit. I have used it several times.

old thread bump: does ford use this engine for any of its cars? I only ask because I have no Mazda dealer within a reasonable distance and it would be pretty convenient if a Ford dealer could get one for me. Anybody know?

don't quote me on this but from my research online, it seems that the ford fusion uses the same filter wrench. so they should be able to get one, maybe not the same part # but just ask them for one for the fusion

I just did the spin on filter conversion which was totally worth the $60... easy to install and you can forget about needing the extra tools...

I had a local car parts place get one in for me for $10. Its pretty easy to change the cartridge filter, dunno why everyone wants to change it to the spin on so badly.

i think its just more peace of mind knowing that there no plastic part that could potentially fail causing severe engine damage
My brother Harley Davidson oil wrench worked just fine for me, while i had the front up to do the breaks i slid over and tried it out, perfect fit
