Hi everyone. I'm just looking for a bit of help from the great people at TM3. I'm looking to move soon, and I need some help finding a place. I want a place that is somewhere fun to live for a 23 year old guy who still likes going out and having a good time on occasion. I work in Newmarket (404/Davis), but I want to have easy access downtown, as well, so somwhere near a subway line would be great, but also pretty far north so that I can get to work easily.
My question is where would I start looking for a place? I've never rented in TO, so I don't know where to look. I've been looking on viewit.ca, mls.ca and myhood.ca, but other than that, I don't know where to look. Can anyone help me? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Pete

you should try checking out craigslist.org as well. there's always apts/housing popping up on there daily and sometimes at really sweet deals.

Craigslist is great.
It will all depend on how much you re looking to spend. Some areas are more expensive than others. Yonge & Sheppard is a good and busy area with access to the subway, 401 and close to the 404.

Yonge and Sheppard is okay, but if it were me I'd live at Yonge and Eglinton. There is a ton of stuff to do and it's a nicer area than Yonge and Sheppard. Of course you're on the subway and you're relatively close to the 401, Allen, DVP, and downtown. Prices aren't cheap, but when considering the location what can you expect.

I would have suggested Y&E also but it's not nearly as close to the 401 for him to get to work that's all. That is a good area also.

Well, I work in Richmond Hill and live at Bayview and Eglinton and can tell you that I get to the 401 in about six minutes. Not bad at all if you ask me and worth it considering the proximity to downtown and Y&E.
Don't get me wrong, Y&S is pretty good, but it's already brutally overcrowded and there are at least another 3-4 condos coming up there that will only add to the congestion. Also, I find that there are a greater number of restaurants and shops at Y&E.
The good thing about Y&S is that there are a ton of relatively new condos in the area so you won't have any trouble finding a nice place to live. At Y&E there are far fewer new developments and they're a little more pricey.

I love the Y&E area, as well. It's not THAT bad of a drive in to work, and it is a great area, and i have lots of friends right there. However, it's cost-prohibitive for a 1 br, and the bachelor pads in the area are tiny. If anyone else wants to live there... hahaha.
Actually, a friend of mine might be looking for a room mate, so we'll probably look in the Y&E area, since she works downtown...

So you head up Bayview to get to the 401? What time-ish do you leave, if you don't mind me asking? And how is the traffic coming home? In my limited trips at normal driving times, it seems to be a lot worse coming south than going north...

I agree with it being over crowded. Bayview is perfect for coming up as it's very quick. Y&E was my other choice for location to live and I ended up in the Y&S area so I guess I'm biased now. :chuckle

How did you find your place? An agent? or something like craigslist/viewit/mls?

Craigslist. I've been in the area for 2 years now and like it.

That's awesome. I've always been hesitant to use it, I have no idea why, I kinda have a stigma about it... But I've found some pretty nice, reasonably priced places. How do you like the Y&S area?

How about a compromise - Yonge and Finch.
That way, you can walk to MoT for entertainment hahaha....:chuckle

Yup, Bayview to 401, 401 to 404 North and done.
I leave fairly early at around 7:30am and it only takes me 20-25 minutes to get from my place to Leslie and 16th. Coming home I leave around 5:00pm and it usually takes about 30-35 minutes max.

Ummmm... wait.... :whoa I don't know.... just throwing it out there then?:chuckle
If it helps, I know a few members that live (and/or used to live) in that area.

And that's taking the reverse route? I find that dealing with the 404 at the 401 is a huge pain in the arse....

You can always get off at Finch or Sheppard, travel across to Bayview or Leslie and down. I find myself travelling across Finch quite a bit when traffic is heavy on the S/B 404.

Yup, I've tried a few different routes coming home and they're all the same ($hitty). The catch is that if there was ever a route that had a really good day, it's Bayview south in the afternoon rush hour. The only thing you have to watch out for are the constant speed traps near the Toronto French School at Lawrence and a few other spots in and around the area.

Yonge/Finch
Edit: Ok, I got it. It's a compromise because it's neither Sheppard or Eglinton?:loco

These are all very interesting points... I would LOVE to find someone to carpool with, if I end up moving down there, because it kills me to watch the people zoom zoom by in the HOV lane... Mostly with only 1 person in the car.... :flaming
Thanks everyone for the help.... I'll be joining you guys in the area in the near future. More advice is, obviously, welcome...

Hahaha, alright, I'll give you that one.... It's a stretch, but benefit of the doubt wins, I guess....
