CTV ACQUIRES EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO 'THE HOCKEY THEME

Toronto, ON - CTV Inc., together with Copyright Music & Visuals, today announced that CTV Inc. has acquired all rights to 'The Hockey Theme' in perpetuity, preserving the song's legacy and ensuring it will be heard on national television for years to come. 'The Hockey Theme' song will now live on CTV Inc. properties TSN, RDS and across Canada on CTV during coverage of the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympics as outlined below.

The deal between CTV and Copyright Music & Visuals was agreed to in principle after the CBC publicly announced last Friday at 5 p.m. ET that a deal could not be reached with the rights holders. Due diligence was completed earlier today.

The song, which was created by Vancouver's Dolores Claman in 1968, will now be used in NHL broadcasts on TSN and RDS beginning this Fall. In addition, CTV will utilize the song as part of its hockey coverage during the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

"The song has a long and storied history in Canadian sports and has become ingrained in the hearts and minds of hockey fans across the country. It is an iconic tune, embraced by Canadians everywhere, and we felt it was imperative to save it. We know we will be in hockey forever, so there's no doubt this acquisition will create value for us," said Rick Brace, President, Revenue, Business Planning and Sports, CTV Inc. "It's an honour and a privilege to own such a cherished piece of Canadiana."

"I am very moved by how so many Canadians have taken the hockey theme to heart. We are so pleased the song has found a new home," said Claman. "Throughout our negotiations, CTV displayed a tremendous amount of respect for my family and the song. 'The Hockey Theme' means so much to Canadians, and we know it's in good hands with CTV."

The announcement complements TSN's new six-year multi-platform NHL deal, featuring more coverage of Canadian teams than ever before with at least one Canadian team in every game. Earlier this year, RDS extended its exclusive rights agreement with the Montreal Canadiens through the 2011-12 season.

CTV, together with TSN and RDS, boast the most powerful and prestigious sports programming lineup in the country featuring the NHL and Stanley Cup Playoffs, NFL games and the Super Bowl, every CFL game including the Grey Cup, International Hockey including the World Juniors, NBA, Blue Jays Baseball, all four golf Majors, all four tennis Grand Slam events, Season of Champions Curling, NASCAR and F1, and this month's NBA Finals and UEFA EUROŽ 2008.

CBC are idiots....whoever is running the show is stupid. Remember they already removed HNIC on the french channel and soon the English one will follow. People complain that you no longer have the habs games on free tax paid TV, imagine the same for the rest of the country....man is this tradition ever getting slashed for us that grew up with it....TSN just arent the same IMO

I'm not complaining that I don't get to see habs games on national tv... would rather watch Leafs, no matter how much they are 're-building'...:chuckle

well it all happened because the company that owns the rights refused to drop the lawsuit about how CBC made money on selling the tune to cell phone companies...

oh well hope the new tune is as catchy... they got it right by opening a nation-wide contest... however i'm thinking CBC will own all the rights outright and the winner gets honorable mention...

I have to agree, its not going to be the same, the theme is partly what makes HNIC what it is.......and to see your major rival, CTV,:loco sign an exclusive rights deal, somethings seriouly wrong with the CBC...

Completely agree. I can see this as the beginning of the end for Hockey Night in Canada on CBC. Due to the fact that CBC did not retain the rights to "The Hockey Theme", I can see public outcry and protest by NOT tuning into HNIC on CBC anymore.

The new tune will never replace the original song. I just hope it'll be decent. However, I can also see that the new tune will somehow incorporate the original just so that it is keeping it's "roots".

CTV made a great move in acquiring the song, let's hope they use it well.

But then again, Leafs fans will always watch HNIC so I don't know how much CBC will lose out on this.

I can't believe that CBC did that...

All I have to say is:

Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb....

I wouldn't be surprised if CTV Globemedia/TSN had this planned long before the rights were up with CBC. It was almost too perfect for them to swoop in and take it away that quickly. The CBC once again underestimated the public backlash and CTV pulled off the perfect coup. Certainly won't be the same.

I understand WHY CTV did this, but it's not right. That song belongs on HNIC, and it won't be right to a) Hear it before TSN hockey games, and b) hear any other theme before HNIC. It's brutal. I agree that CBC isn't losing much, as people will still watch HNIC every week, but it's still terrible.
On a side note, I heard last night that Stompin' Tom Connors has approached the CBC to licence "The Good Ol' Hockey Game" to them as their new theme. I think this is an even worse idea, sincee it's played at LEAST once per game, and you'll be able to hear it throughout the game, not just before...

Just my $0.02.

I'm just glad an American company didn't buy it.

Could you even imagine!! That would have been REALLY bad!

CBC is stupid. I mean the lack of the song won't deter people from watching the game but CBC doesn't deserve to televise hockey with that kind of attitude towards it or it's audience.

Remember this is nothing new. Look at the outcry over Cherry and then MacLean. The CBC does not get it.

the only fault i see on CBC is that they were clearly in the wrong in selling the song as ringtones (directly or indirectly) and using it outside of the contract terms that was signed previously... CBC is a publicly run company and must televise programs as dictated by the gov't unlike CTV (well not nearly as much) therefore CBC doesn't and probably will never have the same pruchasing power as CTV... they were outbid on the Olympics, etc., etc., and I don't see a reverse trend anytime soon... one day it may boil down to CTV owning all rights to hockey games... we grew up watching on CBC, now the new gen of kids will start to watch more TSN with the hockey song, maybe the next one will be watching hockey on CTV exclusively... life goes on...

one note though is that a lot of hockey people commented how the NBC version of the Stanley Cup Playoffs was a lot better than the CBC version... something to do with Bob Cole is way past his prime and shouldn't be the play by play voice anymore (he doesn't get the names right, etc. like he used to)

Funnily enough CBC have gained the rights to the hot shows that are "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" from CTV, and are going through great lenghts to tell everyone about this "coup"....:loco

That money could have been better use preserving the tradition of HNIC, me thinks!

how can they ruin such a tradition.. what a slap in the face for the lady who composed the piece.... and for CTV to now own the rights to it just makes it that much worse!!

Oh well.. First they tried taking Cherry away can't wait to hear the new theme not!!!
