how crazy is it to use regular octane gas in our turbocharged cars?
the manual says anything less than the recommended 91 will hinder performance but it doesn't say anything about damaging the turbo. i've used 87 since gas prices went off the charts over the past while. it lags a bit but nothing too noticeable although i notice blue smoke when i hit it WOT. anyone else admit to doing this???

If you can afford a Turbo car you can afford 91 or 94 octane.

That and synthetic oil are minimums.

It says you can use 87 octane in EMERGENCY cases.

Dealer originally put in 87 ><... boost would cut out right after about 2800 RPM ahah.

DO NOT USE IT ON A REGULAR BASIS, 91 seems to be ok on the MS3, nothing below 93 will suffice for the MS6.

I'll trade cars with you.

Matt you're funny man.

You first have to understand that octane levels are there as a knock retard index.
Running a turbo means you're running at a high compression in your cylinder, thus increasing the chances of pre-ignition. The higher the octane, the less likely it it to preignite from the compression..etc
Now the Speed3 when filled with 87 octane will go into emergency mode and adjust the timing accordingly to compensate, it will also rich out the fuel. However they say for emergency only .. and that's just in case you are on a road trip and the only station you see has 87 octane... and it's so you can limp your way to a proper gas station.
You WILL be doing damage to your engine if you use it constantly. Also any money you think you're saving will be lost as the computer riches out any of your cost savings.

Factor in that on a tank going from 87 octane to 91 octane the cost difference is maybe $5?? Like WTF?

I don't believe mzspeed08 is speaking the truth. Anyone semi-smart enough to be able to afford a Speed3 could not be dumb enough to use a substance that could damage the car. Using a lower octane fuel is akin to using inexpensive paint stripper to remove a scratch rather than paying money to have it repainted properly. It just doesn't make sense.

I'd never equate smarts with wealth!!

And really, there's tons of smart people who haven't got a clue about octane levels or what they're for. Hell, I'm sure there's plenty of people here who don't think of themselves as stupid who put high octane gas in their non-turbo 3's.

Hopefully this guy has learned something here, and now knows better.

I mean... there's a guy here who used a scouring pad to wash his car. That doesn't make him stupid. Just means he didn't know any better at the time. People have to learn things.

Nothing but 94 in my tank - If money is too tight for that extra $5 at fill-up - You have bigger issues.

Turbo - Premium fuel only
Non Turbo - Regular or Premium fuel

Nuff said.
