I HIGHLY doubt Mazda would use Fram as their oil filter supplier.
Fram's track record, is very poor (e.g. http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/~rblander/FRAM_recall.html)
Not to mention their oil filter quality, is well... shitty
I can't find the picture, but Fram uses cardboard inside their oil filter (Mazda does not, it was on www.msprotege.com, I can't find the thread).
Another reason why Fram sucks

just curious who told you Mazda uses Fram?
I still can't find the thread for you.
But I have seen that cut away filters of both mazda and fram and they are different

I think that guy needs to check his sources. I've been on both sides of the biz (aftermarket and dealer) and I can assure you that the Mazda oil filters are not relabeled Fram filters. I know Purolator makes many OEM manufacturer filters.

more likely rebranded Ford filters, both the Mazda 2.3 and Ford 2.3 share the same block

Well the 2.3 filter has a Ford part number on it.
