Well, I got a chance to try out my brakes for real today....

There is construction on Steeles near the Credit river, and the West bound has been down to one lane for a while. Even if you aren't on the road everyday the lane closure is can be easily seen from a couple of klicks away. Most people move over and with plenty of time to spare... and a few yo-yos race to the merge point and jam their way in. Had one of those today... idiot raced by everyone slammed on the brakes and merged in a couple of cars ahead of me. At 80 km/hr. Guy in front of me slammed on his brakes... I hit the pedal and it felt like I'd thrown out an anchor :) The really stupid part... there was no one behind me for at least half a klick :flaming

I know exactly what/where you are talking about.

I had to take that route a couple of weeks ago (sometimes in the rain) for 2 weeks and it was very frustrating!

It's even worse when I'm side by side with someone, and the person beside me knows his lane is ending or vice versa, and we both slow down so that the other can merge into the free lane and then we both speed up since no one is moving and then this goes on until we have nowhere left to go.:whoa

I hate those selfish bastards that charge up on the right side and dart in front to merge, slowing everyone else down! It's a major cause of traffic jams, but those ignorant pricks don't seem to realize or care as long as they get an extra car length ahead..

I don't let them in. Run them right to the end.

There's no reason anyone should ever make it to the end of a merge lane. Once you know you need to merge, you should be looking for the safest and most courteous way to do so.

Yeah, *I* won't let them in (unless they are crawling along with their blinker on, then I don't mind as they are asking politely for someone to make a gap).

Best story I have also happened on Steeles, Eastbound from Mississauga road.... it was a single lane at the time, traffic just barely crawling. Asshat decided to pass everyone on the dirt shoulder. About half an hour later (when I said crawling, I meant close to stopped. This is about a two minute drive under normal circumstances.) I got to bridge over the Credit river. Where the road shoulder reached the bridge there was about a 1½ foot high jump up to the bridge. And sitting there, on the shoulder, with his blinker on was mister asshat. He must have been there at least half an hour and NO ONE let him it! :chuckle

I dislike drivers that would be in the right lane, and then as soon as there's an on-ramp, they'd change into that lane to pass everyone and re-enter the highway..

I concur fully. If everyone were more courteous drivers, there would be a LOT less traffic, in my opinion.

I also don't let these people in. I've been inches from someone else, not letting them in. It's their own fault for not getting in when they had the chance.

I should have prefaced this by saying that, when there is a merge lane, I always leave room in front of me to let people in, until I clearly see the "Lane End" sign. At that point, I won't let anyone in.

^^ Exactly. I drive rush hour on the dvp and I always leave space ahead of me when I'm near the on ramps. I do this so peeps can get into the lane early.

If someone wants to run the on ramp right out to the end I stay with them, however, I am prepared to jam on the brakes if I need too. Just the other day I was cut off when a guy ran the lane out, and he kept going on the shoulder to get in front of me. On this occassion I wasn't running him out of the lane; he came from waaaayyyy back. Funny how some people seem to really need to gain that extra 20 or 30 feet in rush hour traffic...

Seriously eh? What's the difference between being infront of you or being behind you. You'll get to your destination at the same time!

SHEEEEESH! :loco

Do that on the 404 just north of the 401, southbound, there might be a cop waiting for ya (Finch on-ramp). Witnessed it on two different days in the past month hahaha. LOVE IT. Finally cops doing something to the liking of most other drivers! He had pulled over four cars already and nabbed the fifth that was about to cut me off but squirmed over onto the on-ramp ... :bana

The problem with that is that the idiot problem gets worse. I fully believe that the largest reason there are so many a**h*** drivers is that no one calls them on their behaviour.

Here's another fantastic example of someone not giving a rat's ass about his impact on other drivers:

I was at my son's grade eight grad on Thursday. Went to pick him up afterward, got stuck in the line of people in the parking lot driving past the entrance looking for their kid. Limos, buses, properly parked cars, and an on-coming bus made for a pinch point. The on-going bus needed to turn through the line of traffic that I was in. The turnip-brain a few cars ahead stopped his SUV just past the pinch-point, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DRIVING LANE, got out and went looking for his kid. With an entire line of cars behind him, grid-locking everything. NO ONE did anything! The dumb-dumbs that saw him get out didn't honk, they didn't complain... they just stopped behind the SUV and added to the problem. I figured out what had happened when I got out so I could look ahead and see what was going on. So yes, I honked my horn a bit. Which encouraged the a couple of the people who were past the pinch-point to go around the parked SUV and get the whole mess unstuck.
