Hey all,

Well I posted this somewhere else but decided I'd open a new thread for ease of future reference,.....anyways for anyone who's interested;

Just replaced all four corners with Magnum rotors, (Cross-drilled+zinc-Cadmium coated+Black painted hubs, cost; $210 tx in) and Hawk pads (HPS fronts+ Performance Ceramic in back, cost; $170 tx in).I also decided to replace the slider pins on all calipers, which I ordered thru FlipDaddy cost was around $25 taxes in....I wanted to do more of a caliper rebuild but the price for the kits were unbelievably high, so I stuck with only the sliders.

Installation was strait forward no problems with fitment, just a note but we used a synthetic anti-seize lube for the sliders etc; instead of the common brass based lube used by most places....it may seem like a small detail but I noticed how the slider lube which had been placed on by the dealer had become crusty with age, obviously not a good sign! ....the synthetic should eliminate that facter.

I ran the brake (break-in procedure), as stated by Hawk, immediately after install; 8-10 near stops from 60kph and 6-8 near stops from 80kph...pretty close anyways, (brakes hawled and grinded like a dying pig during this period), then let them cool down for approx 15 minutes and I was on my way! ( I did get an erroneous ABS light, but it went away with a shut down and restart of the engine).

Initially, I was impressed by the strong braking performance, reminiscent of the OEM brakes when new, but without the touchiness and with a more linear feel, but the main thing is the noise,...there is none! quite as a mouse!! I was surprised, expecting atleast the ceramics to make abit of a squeal but not a peep.

Now, 1000+ kms later, they are running perfect, same feel, no noise whatsoever, not even the early morning squeal after a rain or dewy night.(there is very little rust build-up on the contact face of the rotors after a rain or wash also).

Best part is I think they,(the ceramic pads), solved the rear brake dust problem!!, I've driven for more than a week without washing the vehicle and there is not a sign of dust on the rear wheels....and very little on the front I would add....just awesome.

I guess I'll wait till I hit the 24k mark on these then write an update, but for those that are looking for a brake replacement I would strongly suggest this set-up for quality, performance and best of all cost!

Are you running ceramics on the rear brakes? How are the rotors holding wear wise?

I have a similar "seizing"/sticky brake issue on my rear brakes, which is causing high amt of brake dust on my rear rim's.

I'm either looking to replace the calipers or just rebuild the calipers. Who/what is flipdaddy and how can I get new slider pins? Also what kind of lube did you use and where did you buy it?

Pls let me know,
Thanks

First, great review/update/writeup...
2. Maybe a stupid question (please don't flame me) but why did you go non-ceramic up front, ceramic in the rear only?

FlipDaddy is one of our mods and Asst parts manager at Mazda of Toronto, (MOT), send him a PM about the sliders.

As for the Synthetic anti-seize~ you'll have to give me some time to get back to you on it, I can't recall the exact brand name off hand.

And if I remember correctly, even the rear is not made for the Mazda 3... It's from the Volvo S40. :chuckle

Actually the Hawk site lists them as Mazda, Volvo rear :)

To Flagrum_3: Thanx for an advise! After I talked to U I went for the same set up ( just waiting for the front ones ). Noise has disappeared, dust is nothing compare to what I had. If I have the same feeling after 5000K that will be one of the best mods I've done so far.

Hey no problem! ...I'm hoping too, that long term it works out also!...I'm nearing the 3k mark on my set and so far so good. :)

Also for whomever wanted to know; the anti-seize I used on the pins and calipers is called Permatex ; Ultra Disc Brake Caliper Lube synthetic lubricant....its not cheap, $25 for a bottle, but its one of the best out there!....I picked it up at a NAPA auto parts store.

I've been doing research on brakes/calipers/rotors. The rear brake dust problem is attributed most likely to the seizing/stickyness of the calipers.

I just got the service records from the original owner and noticed that he had started to have the issue on that rear left since around 7000km's. He had the brakes serviced 3 times since than, so almost every year.

So now I have a decision to make whether I should replace the rear calipers or just keep doing the service every year, lubing up the caliper slider pins, etc. I can get rear calipers from a NAPA distributor for $150 and new is $200 from dealership. So any thoughts?

I am going to go ahead and replace all pads while im down there with Hawk HPS.

What's the year and mileage on your vehicle? If your calipers are seizing and you are still under warranty, they can be replaced under warranty.

-It's probably a good practice to dismantle, clean and lube the rear brakes atleast once a year (good preventative maintenance) and pretty easy to do at anytime and situation.

-If your out of warranty then I guess getting new calipers is your only option as the caliper rebuild kit is almost as much money :loco ......Have you talked to FlipDaddy about the calipers? He might be able to get a better price on oem.
