Just thought that all you TML fans out there might like to know that according to Sportsnet (http://sportsnet.ca/hockey/2008/07/01/leafs_joseph/), the Leafs are officially into the Free Agency Market...
Signing Curtis Joseph (yup) to a 1 year deal...
And I thought Cliff was doing things right for a while.

I don't have an issue with the Joseph signing. For 700k a year, for one year he's a good backup.
What floors me is the signing of Jeff Finger, to a 4 year contract at 3.5M a year. He's had one NHL season, isn't physical or a goal scorer.

I thought the Leafs were rebuilding. Why are we signing CuJo? Toskala doesn't need no mentoring!

agreed, but he shouldn't be playing every game either. They want Pogge to start for the Marlies.

Im pleased we will be getting our goaltending back, but the way CUJO left "wanted to be in a stanley cup winning team"
Will the fans still accept him?

I think that they'll accept him...... maybe not at first.... but they will.
As a backup goalie, I don't see anything wrong with this signing at all :)

Pretty cheap for a reasonable backup goalie. He has said he wouldn't mind playing backup, but it'd still be nice to have some fire under Toskala's butt.

Okay, I don't follow the Leafs so I'm hoping somebody can answer the following question:
Who will be the Leafs Captain next season? Mats is (or will be) gone, and from what I recall the two Assistant Captains are a non issue (Tucker is one and he's gone, McCabe the other and the Leafs are trying to get him to waive his no-trade clause).

Jeff Finger? :chuckle
Last year, they were talking, if i'm not mistaking, as trying to groom Stajan for El Capitano. But next year, I think it'll be Kaberlae.

They'll probably go out and sign a geriatric as captain :(

agreed... i don't know why anyone would complain about a 700k a year signing... they were easily paying more than that for raycroft to lose games.
what do you want the leafs to do? sign emery for a few mill as a backup?
or you want them to put pogge in to start 1 game a month
come on be reasonable guys.

there are no obvious leaders on the team
i don't even think kaberle is captain quality.

While I don't disagree with getting Cujo for a year on the cheap, at what point since they hired him have you had the impression that Cliff was doing anything right??

Hagman was a good signing by the leafs they need to make more good moves like that the free agency this year is amazing tons of big moves
it blows my mind that 700K is considered cheap now
imagine is someone paid you that much to just be a back-up for your job... lol.. must be nice.
Hockey salaries are getting as bad as baseball... we live in such a ridiculous time
people starving to death in some countries, and some people can make 3.5million for playing a game.. it's sick imo

Well, let me preface this by saying that I'm by no means a Leaf fan. I only follow them because they're ALL OVER here.
I've thought that Cliff had been doing the right thing by trying to trade people at the deadline. I think he honestly tried to get rid of some people, but just couldn't because of the NTCs that they all had. I also think he did the right thing by putting some of the guys on waivers that he did, and buying out Tucker. It's not an overnight fix, but it'll help in the long run. They've gotta start dismantling before they can rebuild.
Cujo is a great pick-up, he is a real class guy, he can make a difference in the dressing room. I am still wondering if the Wellwood thing was the right thing, he had a rough year with injuries, the leafs have waited so long on guys like Antropov and Pony to develop and they still suck. I would have kept him in the mix and waived him early in the season if he wasn't working out. As far as the captain goes they haven't signed him yet!

I personally don't think that it'd be right to bring someone in and give them the C... I just think that you have to get in with the team before giving him such a leadership role in the room. If you don't think that Kaberlae is C-worthy, then I think they have to sign someone they think would be captain, and maybe give it to him 1/2 way through the year if it's working out as planned...

Fact is though, if they don't pay them that much, then the money just goes in the owners pockets. The money is there, and the players keep it coming in, so they deserve their cut.
Same goes for actors and what not. Sure, they make oodles of money... but their skills earn it back in spades.
Nobody would pay me that much because they can get someone else to do what I do for less. That's just the way the free market works.

Stop watching!
I guess you missed when he was a captain on the Islanders

Yeah but he was playing pretty well then and during his first season or so with the Leafs. Unfortunately he's not even close to the caliber he was before.
He is the same player he has always been, the game has changed a lot, it is much faster and they made a rule that makes his can-opener a penalty. He is over paid because the Leafs waited to sign him in the off-season of his career year, the leafs could have had him for much less if they had of signed him when he was looking for an extension.
